Review Dogs Lose to Demons by 28 - Rd 11, 2021

Our Plan A was shown up tactically tonight. It's as simple as that. Melbourne were phenomenal of the ball and we didn't have an answer for it. Midfield pace may have helped, which was probably the point of Garcia coming in to replace Treloar but even if he'd played out the game it would have been to heavy a burden for a first gamer.

This wake-up call was inevitable. Melbourne have now layed down the blueprint for how to beat us and now it's up to the coaching staff to figure out how to play against a perfectly executed full ground zonal defence.

Turnovers killed us early, then we played catch-up football all night.
A few players were a little off, Bailey Smith a couple of fumbles when he'd normally take the ball cleanly. Melbourne did really well to deny us the corridor - we could have pushed one of our three marking talls up higher in the centre. I suspect in finals we'd swing some more moves.

Smashed all over the park. On the backfoot from the get go with crazy turnovers and Melbourne controlled the game with their superior structure.

Ordinary game. A few blokes tightened up. Dale and Smith (again) not good under pressure (or perceived)

Good comeback for English.

Macrae is the most consistent mid in the league. Libba was sat on need another extract or like Wallis or even West to support him. Not Lipi.

Subi and weaker Oppo may suit Lipinski. But his defense and contested work is not AFL standard. Guaranteed to lose most contests be they in the air or on the ground. Disappointing.

Butchered the ball, didn't handle Dee's pressure at all, Libba beaten on inside, not gonna win any with that happening. Bad night, next week a must win before some really tough games.

Basically couldn't have played that worse.

Started poorly, gave up far too many turnovers from risky kicks. Not enough hard work. Too many long balls, after Adelaide showed the way last week with hard running and 20 - 30 m passes to move the ball forward. Not enough separation from the key forwards. Didn't make Lever and May accountable at all all night. Not hard enough in the contest and left too much to too few.

Hopefully we work on these issues and never see this game repeated again...

Not too concerned by that. We stunk it up with our main issue being skill mistakes leading to turnovers and usually goals. The Dees punished us and we played pretty dumb for much of it. Not ideal but an off night is hardly damning in the context of the full season (watch the media write us off completely now though). Our worst is a bit ugly but you could say that about every side in it.

Liked English's game and Roarke had an impressive crack, that late turnover aside.

I think we missed Dunkley a lot tonight too.

We have work to do.

We are a finals team, we have players to come back but the opposition has brought the pressure against us in two big tests and we have been found wanting both times.

Not worried about the Freo game, but the Geelong in Geelong and eagles in Perth games are going to be big tests and if we want to stamp ourselves as a contender then we need to stand up in those games.

We aren’t far off but around 4 goal losses against the main contenders says we need to take another step.

English return was promising. Goodwin tagged Libba and we were rudderless. With Dunkley out we need someone to help Libba. Pressure applied by Bont, Libba, Macrae and Smith at centre square really poor. Melbourne far better set up structurally than us and have a system that is built for finals. Still not convinced they are better than us, just better coached. We add Dunks, Treloar, Richards, Martin and Mclean for Garcia, McNeil, Roarke (eventhough he played well for his ability), Sweet and Lipi we are far stronger and should be too good even with poorer setup and structure.

chch
We have a lot of best 22 players not out there tonight. We played timid football and once more the coach wasn't able to switch it up with a different tactic.

Lever and May had a massive impact tonight. We're one quality KPD short at least. If Keith goes down we're done for.

Naught would be robbing Peter, Wood is undersized, inury prone and on the wrong side agewise, Young just simply doesn't get any sort of run and the less said about Cordy the better.

Harmes was enormous. Brayshow's defending of the fat side meant we couldn't switch the ball easily. We can learn a lot from this.

Lipinsky and McNeil not up to it, Cody Weightman our only decent small forward. Can’t wait for McLean to be back
McNeil and Roarke were ok, Newnes didn't get his normal free run of UC ball.
It was the battle in the centre that killed us. Harmes beat Libba convincingly.
