Have to acknowledge Mayne's efforts in the last month having switched to defence.

I've been absolutely against his selection when he was played on the wing as he is one of the biggest culprits in our ball movement by always going backwards and refusing to take responsibilty to spot up a forward target. But a defensive position suits his capabilities much better where he is a steadying influence down back. Even seems to have started taking some riskier diagonal forward kicks to spot up short targets (I guess you have to when you're the last line of defence instead of on the wing).

Still think he should retire end of the year as we look to give opportunities to Murphy/Keane/Ruscoe in the back half. But at least he should retire as a serviceable clubman like a Goldsack instead of as a whipping boy.

Yeah he was ok today. Some of his kicks were quite dangerous despite being relatively low reward, but today they came off.

Who in tf thinks that Mayne has been good?

You are all blind.

He is a massive burden.

He never ever takes an attacking option, he can't.

Always sideways and backwards, never ever an attacking mindset.

Most useless, overplayed recruit I can remember for a long time. This team will never be able to move forward when such a safe player with zero attacking ability is making the 22.

Hes always been a servicable clubman. He has been a fantastic asset to the club.

Then how did he gain 414 metres and 6 rebound 50's today?

Was good today but why is he taking a spot given where we are at? We shouldn’t be playing blokes who are not the way forward. If we play blokes like Mayne we might as well play Cox who will at least be a target to straighten us up. Not sure where he’s at with his training injury... anyway neither Mayne or Cox are our future.

100%,
he actually slows any play that we have down by going for little 15m passes inside 50 backwards and sideways, one pocket to the other.
it was no coincidence we suddenly started moving the ball better and far quicker in the 2nd half when he wasn’t in the chain of possession

Roughhead, Pendlebury and Sidebottom are also not part of our future. You going to replace them as well?

‘You need to get balance right. Mix of experience and youth while rebuilding. Mayne at least demonstrates the on field effort and team discipline that the kids need to see and learn from.

‘Mayne is frustrating, but he should stay if performing well. There are others who should make way before Mayne based on yesterday.

You are right.I react like this because I’m so desperate for a fundamental shift in the game plan. Hanging on to these guys creates a perception that what we have been doing is working or worth persisting with. I’d be happier if there was acknowledgement that it’s not working but we can’t just burn the joint down. I appreciate our depth is poor.

His contract was expensive, but if he’s willing to stay on for chips, he’s decent depth. You rarely have best 22 on the park.
He’s basically the defensive version of Sidebottom right now. Experienced player offering not a lot, and certainly miles below their career best, but needed because there are just so many kids in the side.

He should under no circumstances be taking kick ins. If that doesn't present as the perfect example of Buckley's safe attitude I don't know what is. "Mayney's got an elite DE%, he should take kick ins!"

Mayne himself has been solid. Shouldn't be in the 22 next year, but he's alright

Been really solid the last few weeks.

I dead-set flogged this guy in the first year we recruited him, there is almost certainly a long rant in the archives, (by me) stating he is probably the worst deal/recruit/trade EVER in the history of the club and possibly the history of all codes of football, played anywhere in the known universe.

That said, he turned it right around, Chris Mayne has become a very honest, hard-working, and accomplished member of the side, a genuine contributor. He did very, very well on the wing for a couple of years and now, having looked a bit slow and a bit shaky, has gone back into a young and somewhat decimated defence and stood up strong whilst many all around him have wilted. Chris Mayne has earned my respect and my gratitude, he has done very well for himself, his teammates, the club and for us the supporters as well. 'Gave his all' will be written on his locker after he is gone.

Respect the guy for his doggedness and ability to reinvent himself but along with Greenwood and Thomas he needs to be retired at years end.

Whether in the middle or down back he is taking up a spot that hinders the development of another player.

I’d rather Keane or Kelly get a solid month down back in his position. Wouldn’t be too top heavy as both are just as quick as Mayne

Ideally we move on 6 or so at years end... freeing up at least 4 senior list spots so we have room for Daicos, Dib and to upgrade Noble and Keane to the senior list. That then opens up further rookie spots.

But if Bucks stays on Mayne will play every week down back for the next 18 months.

If Mayne plays every game through the 2022 season it would tell us 1 of 2 things. Either we've got a lot of injuries, or the kids aren't pushing him out through weight of performance. I personally don't see him on the list in 2022.

I don't either, unless he's brought back on a genuine minimum wage. He'll be 33 by year's end and is not a part of our future at all.

Could be good to have around from a professionalism perspective, but other than that really not sure what he'd offer in 2022

Yea me too. I was deadset against his recruitment. Still have a love/hate relationship with him but it's funny to think that he has been 10x a better recruit for us than Beams and Wells.
