Do Free Agency rules need to be amended?

Still maintain that one of the biggest problems is the salary cap floor is too high. It means that the worst teams pay almost the same for the list as the top teams (even with the banking over years). Its too hard for them to have enough money in the cap to have enough difference to attract a player.

For example if you had the choice to go to Geelong and contend for a flag right now or go to North for an extra $100k but struggle for the next 3-4 years. Why is it a surprise where players end up?

Agree with this. Means its much more difficult for bottom sides to revitalise their list.

Geelong has secured two of the biggest three free agents to leave their clubs in Dangerfield and Cameron (Franklin the other one) yet we have paid four first rounders plus additional picks/players to get them.

Worth it? Absolutely, and any other club would do the same if players of that calibre wanted to join them.

But exactly how is this favouring Victorian clubs?

Especially when AA forwards (Daniher), premiership rucks (Lycett) and AA mids/former club captains (Rockliff) have joined non-Victorian clubs as 'free' agents with their new clubs giving up nothing except salary cap space?

It's then up to the clubs to be well run, so that they can lure and retain players. Brisbane, Sydney, Port, and West Coast have all landed gun players from other clubs. The only thing that needs to change with FA is to scrap compensation.

The rules don't favour Victorian clubs, they favour well run clubs. And all clubs have the capacity to hire the right people, if they don't then they deserve to miss out.

Pretty much every trade involves the player deciding where they want to play football. Hell even the draft is compromised with players like Archie Perkins that dictate where or where they will not go.

Every professional does not have a choice in where they are located. All those fifo workers would love the opportunity to not leave their families... obviously they are compensated but so are afl players (obviously rookies aren’t that well compensated)

Ellis was worth second round compensation, but because the exact position of those picks is tied to your ladder position, it is barely different to end of second round if you win the flag. Since exact deals aren't revealed it's probably not BS, just a small difference in Ellis's contract bumped ours down a rung. If we won the spoon it wouldn't have mattered so much.
The massive jumps in value of compensation shouldn't be a thing imo. Compensation should be calculated as a points value and wherever that amount of points fits into the draft, it slots in there.

One idea, put a cap on the number of free agents each club can pickup over a certain period.
Whether it be so many per year, or x amount over 2/3 years.

It doesn’t put the brakes on the ability for a player to transfer, but it could assist in players being spread more evenly.

Could also incorporate a rule that if a team haven’t qualified for the finals in say x years then they’re allowed to pick up an additional free agent.

Anyways just an idea.

So punish a team for making good decisions with their recruiting, and help a team that makes bad decisions? No thanks.

Geelong are in a window right now, and they've topped up to win a premiership, but they'll crash once all their old (and good) campaigners retire. Richmond the same. It happened to Brisbane, it happened to Hawthorn, it'll eventually happen to Geelong and Richmond.
