And that seemed to be SOS’ MO.

Clean out & dropping the spending then front load to bring up to the minimum TPP.
Exactly. It was always the way under SOS.

We were also apparently prepared under SOS to pay Coniglio $1.2mil (hugely front ended) so that almost cancels out Saad and Williams.
To go with that I’m sure SOS was expecting players like Dow, LOB, SPS, Setterfield etc to be demanding a lot more then they would be now at the time. I would actually be shocked if we are under any salary cap pressure at all.

McGovern may only be on ~$400k from next year if his contract was front loaded as expected so unless we get a ready made backup KPP or two I wouldn’t bother moving him on.
It's not his contract that I care about, it's his output. We have a habit of using doublethink in regards to our list management when it comes to taller players - 'can't trade player 'X' until we get someone better', 'don't need another tall because we have player 'X''.

Well you do need depth and MCGovern is that. The problem is he is worth bugger all in a trade and there is a fair chance he isn’t on much money. Good luck finding a good third tall who won’t cost much in a trade or salary.
Just because he has been a bad investment doesn’t mean we are better off getting rid of him now. Fully fit he is probably still best 22.

Around the time Jones was switched to defence in the VFL he also played some time in the ruck and did exceptionally well especially around the ground, if we had a 3rd tall defender Jones would be ideal but we don’t so he won’t.
McGovern? Would need to play undersized though, and I don't really trust him on bigger key forwards. At least that would free up Jones to do some ruck work.

This is the issue we have right now, because Levi, OMac, Mirkov and even maybe Pitto are not best 22 worthy. We literally have no one else to provide ruck relief for TDK.

McGovern is worth trying imo. JSOS can be the 3rd forward behind McKay and Charlie if all fit, so we dont lose much from the forwardline anyway.

It looks like most of us agree that playing Gov in defence (and using Jones as ruck relief) is the right way to go in the future.

The only problem is getting the coaches to implement this - changes to our 22/game style isn't something they normally do.

I can’t see why we wouldn’t have front loaded it heavily considering it was such a long contract.
if we were stupid enough to sign him to a 4 year contract with his injury concerns, then i believe we are stupid enough to not do it responsibly.

i just think with every other contract we've been pretty transparent - years/$$$/front loading, with McGovern we don't even know how many years it is, do we? club seems pretty hush about it.

we all thought he was out of contract this year but it's end of next.

This has always worried me as a possibility.. and if i am list manager at North I would be doing exactly as Carey suggest throwing everything.. They can build a side and a culture on the back of the McKay's at each end of the ground.. would be a huge marketing boost and something to sell the members..

If it were to play out, North have the 1st pick in the PSD which no doubt cheapens his trade value.. and North will be reluctant to give up pick 1, and might have to accept a future 1st and some loose change.

North throw the kitchen sink at some free agent every year! McKay is the last bloke who will want to play for North, he has the inside word on how crap they are as a club compared to the Blues.

ps... i don't consider Wayne Carey and expert on anything but how to glass a women...

Oh the club undergoing a review and cant squash the noise around sacking its coach.. We are a shining light for young Harry to turn down an extra million dollars over 5 years... The only thing we have atm over North is the ability to play in front of big crowds regularly..

probably have better facilities and don't forget about the 3 times as many wins per year!

I am not sure why you are worried about North.

1) There are plenty of clubs who can and will offer big $$ to Harry. He'll be very well looked after wherever he plays in 2022.

2) Have we really already forgotten how tough it is for clubs down the bottom to lure players across, particularly on big money contracts? Did we not go through that somewhat recently with plenty of players either choosing to stay at their current club or move elsewhere, despite our financial offer being more compelling? What makes you think this won't be the case for North?

3) If I am North's list manager I am staying well away from Wayne Carey. When has he ever shown any understanding of trades, salary cap, building a list?

4) What sort of 'culture' is built by bringing in someone on $1.2m at the start of a rebuild? They don't have anywhere near the level of young talent at the club to be doing that.

5) The PSD threat is enormously overrated. How many times has it been used in recent years? You'll no doubt raise Jack Martin which was a completely different set of circumstances - anyone else?

6) Aside from money is the only redeeming feature of moving to North that he'd be able to play alongside his brother? I'm not sure that's as compelling a reason to move there as some seem to think.

I think Harry stays but I get that until he's signed there's a chance he'll be playing elsewhere in 2022. But I'm not even remotely worried about North Melbourne - there are plenty of other clubs ahead in the queue for mine.

The only thing? Really?

Please.

I’m very worried by North. He has a completely unimpeded path to play with his twin brother. He is at the start of his career so can build with the young players they are drafting and be part of their next tilt.
If they offer him a tonne of money, I’d think it would be hard to stop him going

I don't believe as a club we are in a position to laugh at any other club or ignore their advances towards our quality kids.
We have failed miserable this year again and once more have opened the door for other teams to sneak a peak.
Personally, I'm very concerned at this point in time.

If Harry was to consider a move to Norf, (as well as laboring in the bottom four of the ladder for many years), he could also end up playing all his home games in Tassie in a few years time. No, all indications have been that we have sufficient cap space to accommodate he and Cripps in our salary cap this year. Our recruiters should have used more initiative, and approached Ben's management to get him here to us, rather than Harry going to them. Too late now, the horse has bolted.

It's 2023 I'm afraid and he wanted 5 years to come over, so we gave it to him.

Was always 5 year contract.

Horrible trade and he's been extremely disappointing but alas.

I can't understand why our mob could not see this predicament appearing. It could have been considered to approach Ben's management in an effort to entice him to play with his twin brother at Carlton, rather than visa versa.. Too late now. The horse has bolted.

I don't think they even want to play together. Happy to ply their wares at different clubs.
