I agree its clickbait but surely internally they would already be feeling the pressure on this deal. If Zaccy's 6 years look anything like the first 6 months, it is a bust of McGovern proportions.

It'll make McGovern look like a bargain. It's a comfortably worse deal should this form continue.

Wouldn't begrudge him if he went to either. He'll do really well anywhere, carlton have just slowed him down. I'll support his career in whatever colours, except red and black.

Had an inkling it was garbage when I saw the '4.8 million dollar' deal statement. I very much doubt he's on 800k per year, 800k for the first year as part of a front-loading I'd believe. They have as much idea as we do to the exact numbers. Jack Martin was being touted as the highest paid player in the league at one stage due to a massively front loaded contract.

The Carlton football club has admitted that it’s coaching group isn’t up to standard. Barker is axed halfway through the season and is not replaced. The club is one coach down across all areas of coaching. They admit that the coaches need help and employ Worsfold as a mentor to all coaches. He’s stuck in Perth.
It’s clear, the players who have come into the club need better development and coaching.
Why is it that Williams, Saad, McGovern, Fogarty and Martin all go backwards now that they’re at Carlton.
This time last year Martin in many media circles was being mentioned as the recruit of the year. Now he is a dud because of the incompetence of our coaching staff rushing him back from a knee injury after not play footy for 9 weeks. Luke Shuey was made to play WAFL football last weekend.
McGovern has clearly been a favourite of Teague. Never has he been fit, match ready or inform. Better player at the Crows.
Williams fat, lazy and was never going to be an elite mid however he should at least deliver the same quality of football he produced at the Giants.
Saad has been just okay but doesn’t want to defend and keeps turning the ball over. He to isn’t playing to the same standard as he did at the bombers.
Are coaching group is clearly not up to it. The football department head got the job being the best mate to the CEO. Chris Judd has gone missing.
We lack knowledge and leadership in all areas of football.

I think they are both underdone and carrying leg injuries.

I agree that no competitive sportsperson goes into a contest with the thought of losing, but many can go into a contest with the thought of self-preservation at the front of their mind. This is something I have seen from Carlton players too many times over the last 15 years or so. If this doesn't change, we will be going through many more coaches before we make a Grand Final, let alone a premiership.

Actually competitive sports people go into contests knowing that there is a fair chance of losing in team sports every week. Self preservation is also an autonomic physical response our brains are hardwired to avoid collision and other dangerous activities.

It takes coaching and skills training to override the autonomic self-preservation instinct and one of the first lessons taught by anyone who has a clue about contact sport is that the safest thing to do is go into every contest as hard as you can - because this elicits an autonomic body response of bracing for collision.

Half-hearted pretend contact actually confuses your body and is a greater cause of physical injury than the conscious go hard at the contest approach. Along with the go-hard lesson - is the teaching of proper technique given any situation. The combination of both produces confidence through experience.

I agree totally with your reflection on the chances of team success sans an ability to engage with robust physicality and it is never too late for any player to learn how to do this in the safest ( to him) manner possible- Cotchin is a standout example of a bloke that was re-engineered from fairy floss to a hard nut.

i watched a little of the Cochrane interview and laughed at his frankness. They talked about the difficulty of getting sponsors, revenue etc.
Then he said " we're even having difficulty meeting the new cap reduction"

I think it's how the coach wants them to play. Ever since he's been hired he's talked about how he wants to play extra attacking. The natural inclination then is to surge forward, which we often do. Little bit of downhills skier in it but I believe it's what they're instructed to do. As soon as you win the ball get forward.

Unfortunately they misread whether we'd won the ball or not, it was still essentially in the contest and everyone bailed forward leaving Dow as a helpless lamb surrounded by wolves.

Agreed. Everyone ran forward, leaving him on his own with no easy outlet. So he's under immense pressure and even if he won the contest the next guys are there and it's a hack kick at best.
Of course he lost so we're 20m off in the wrong direction and they're gone. Then our guys just ran an extra 40m and looked lazy for losing their opponents.

Unfortunately Martin was ready to return when the VFL was in recess, leading to his inclusion in the seniors when a return via the VFL would have been more appropriate.

I would be dropping him back to the VFL now for a couple of weeks to regain fitness & confidence.

Herin lies our problem, if our coaching staff feel we need to include player X because of reputation alone and not a fitness based assessment, our game plan and development are flawed. If our players think they are a walk up start, our culture is flawed. Even Chris Judd came back through the 2's, it is just the way it should be. Time on ground and movement can be assessed through the 2's, not on the big stage.

Okay, not sure what you're getting at with the facts... that story highlights his massive wage last year. if you're the highest paid you're going to take the biggest cut. So he certainly may have still been the highest paid with his front loaded contract.
