I wouldn't.

No guarantees he won't have the same issues here and he has happily extended his contract twice IIRC.

I should qualify that. I'd take him, at the right price. Kelly for me offers not much as a what he's in the team for, as a 3rd defender (i think??) Doedee does the same job and generally does it better. Francis or Dawson would absolutely be an upgrade on Kelly. The great thing is that Kelly is playing some OK footy, and as such might have SOME trade value for teams looking for experience. Happy to come back to this one, but i don't think we're going to offer him the contract he wants, and he'll be used as trade bait.

I know you're very against Francis in general, but his performances have been very good for Essendon, and we'd be silly not to take a chance on him. We're a fairly risk-adverse club, and i'd hope him being closer to family would assist with his health.

Happy to trade for the Melbourne 2nd round pick...

Spot on assessment of value.

An out of contract "homesick" player moving to a club below Sydney on the ladder. Isn't a key forward or midfielder.

That's late second round pick territory, maybe with a few other late swaps

Seedsman (who was not cemented at AFL level with the Pies at the time) cost us pick 32

There is NO way Dawson is coming to us for less than that (i.e. Melb's 2nd) lol

Sydney traded Zak Jones for pick 32 and Aliir for Port's future 2nd.

Somewhere in that 30-35 zone is right for a player like Dawson

He is better, but we are are a worse team. They can take it or we'll PSD them like we did with GWS and Hately
Not sure Sydney would buy the PSD stuff. We aren't wooden spooners like last year, plus there will probably be more teams after Dawson (unlike Hately)

Reckon Clarko would just "lurve" a free hit at Dawson...

Those are the options I'd present them. Pick 24 (as it stands right now and likely to be lower) is too much for him. A ruthless team wouldn't overpay like that.

I'd consider offering the Melbourne pick plus a swap of future 2nds

A midfield glut? What?

Laird, yes a star.
Sloane. Old.
Crouch, coming off a year off, and still could leave as a FA.
And then underneath them a bunch of kids yet to reach 50 games.

We have the least talented and depth in the midfield in almost the entire league and you're still advocating trading a 24yr old with scope for improvement.

You overrate our list something chronic.

You misunderstand what I'm saying.

We have a glut of similar size, age and types - Crouch, Laird, Keays and Sloane seems too many of the same type.

Sure, we can discuss Matt Crouch leaving or players taking different roles. But it is also relevant for a poster to discuss Keays, considering he is arguably the lesser player and we may receive more compansation for him.

Crouch is a FA and his brother just left under identical circumstances.
The likelihood of Crouch leaving exceeds Keays leaving by an incredible amount.

Vader says some oddball things but disagreeing with your Playstation trades isn't being the internet police. FFS he even posted a paragraph explaining it.

Identical circumstances?

Matt Crouch is part of the leadership team and handed our highest ever draftee his guernsey on the day he was drafted.

Brad Crouch didn't run either way, wasn't ever considered a leader, didn't seem to be wanted by the club - and that was before he smashed a few rails with one of the club juniors.

All they have in common is being free agents. If they weren't related, no one would compare their situations.

And thanks for the explanation about Vader - I responded to his paragraph with why I felt he was incorrect.

With Keays you've got a player who can get out of the way and hold on to a place in our best 22 when Berry, Pedlar, Schoenberg and friends take over. You do not have that with Crouch. One of the goal of this rebuild from herein is for them to take over. Effectively keeping Crouch at his juncture would either result in a bad contract 2-3 years down the line as its preventing that transition, or we've imploded again and it was irrelevant.

That's before factoring that by forcing Keays out, we've scuttled any value we could have extracted from him.

If we're gunning for a deep finals run, you retain Matt. You don't in a rebuild when you've got his ball winning skills covered.

Perhaps.

The point being discussed was keeping Keays and getting pick 23 or so for Crouch, or keeping Crouch and getting pick 19 for Keays. It assumed we couldn't keep both but we only discuss Crouch going.

If you want to argue that we're better keeping Keays because, even though he's the lesser footballer, he could potentially have multiple positions, then that's absolutely fair enough. I guess you can argue that Matt Crouch doesn't have a role in a rebuilding side, but I think that just ignores what he brings, both as a leader and a top-5 at a club player.

I think Laird and Crouch can co-exist, but we only have the last half dozen games of last year to prove that.

Jeez Rutten doesn't sound confident here at all. My guess is that he's as good as gone. Jake Kelly replacement?

I'd do it...
Poor bugger.. he shouldve come home instead of signing his last contract..

Been through some heartbreaking shit losing his brother/best friend to cancer the way he did..

Grew up in a tiny outback SA town with a population of 30 so he and his brother wouldve obviously been bloody close.

Aparently he’s been pretty good this year for the bumbers..

Kelly is a FA isnt he?.. not sure why, if they actually wanted Kelly, essendon would look at a player swap when they could just grab kelly for nothing and trade a contracted Francis to us for something..

You can discuss it... it's just that such talk is pure fantasy, with no chance whatsoever of becoming a reality. I prefer to discuss things which may actually come to pass in the future.

I think Crouch could leave because his brother has already gone back to Melbourne, and Adelaide has reportedly only offered him a 2-year contract (when I think he would be looking for longer). He's a FA, and I don't see him having the long term club loyalty that I see in Talia & Walker.

Contracted players are rarely traded unless they are the instigators of the trade. There is no reason at all to think that Keays wants out, and there's no chance whatsoever of the club threatening him with SANFL time if he doesn't go. There is no reason whatsoever to think that he won't be on our list in 2022.

I can pull posts of things you discussed in this very thread that didn't come to pass.

I agree - it's remarkably unlikely that Keays goes. But I also think it's interesting for someone to talk about a possibility that ISN'T the same shit that everyone else talks about. I even like posts about why we should play David Mackay.

I just wish he had a right hand side.
Considering the positive impact he has had on our team and midfield, I'm willing to give him some leeway.
He's still 24, so his peak years are here.
If he can spend a long chunk of this off-season getting a right foot there's no reason why he can't become elite.

To be fair, he doesn't even have a left foot, yet alone a right.

I would keep Kelly over Francis every day of the week and twice on game day. Have to wonder if people even watch games or just look at the names. Francis has done very little yet Kelly has continued to improve a lot over the last two years.

Good teams have a few mid-20s B-graders who try their guts out. That is Kelly and Keays for us. The ones we actually need to move on are the ones past their prime age-wise (Mackay, Lynch) and the ones without a ticker (Himmelberg, Davis, arguably McAdam).

Agree - though I'd be fine with our 2022 2nd Round too.

It's a by product.

He only has one side and so he doesn't have time or confidence to use either side of his body to dispose of the ball, so as a result his left foot kicks are often rushed or a hack.

Once he has confidence in using his right even as a last resort (Matt Crouch has improved this over the years) then he'll be far better.

I’ve always been a fan of Francis and would happily welcome him into the food. Would be a very good get, particularly if it were for a second round pick.

Jesus.

I think he will be for a token late pick upgrade. Something simlar to Jesse Hogan, who was for pick 54.
