Why do jerks always try and piegon hole Slipknot as 'nu-metal'?

They aren't nu metal

They sort of are nu-metal: they became popular around the time it was thriving, drop tunings, focus on the groove etc. But really who cares, they're a great band and put on an awesome show.

If you wanna get into subgenre talk I've always considered Slipknot to be an Alt Metal band (which Nu-Metal is under that branch anyway) and a groove metal band, maybe some industrial metal in their first couple of records.

They definitely do have some very small roots in death metal, but I wouldn't say much about prog or djent.
