The 195cm Nyuon provided some eye catching athleticism with his minutes forward and in the ruck, especially the latter where his outstanding vertical leap often won him the hit out. He gave his midfielders some excellent taps to advantage without breaking stride and competed defensively when the ball hit the ground. He didn’t win much of the ball, but that will come with further development.

Bigoa Nyuon (Rowville Hawks): “Bigoa is part of St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy. He’s pretty raw and has a fair way to go in his development, but he’s a great athlete with great agility and he’s working really hard on his footy fundamentals. He’ll play as a ruckman and go forward or back; he’s a pretty versatile tall.”

This gave the Dandenong boys a huge lift, and they shot out of the blocks. Jai Nanscawen and Bigoa Nyoun had huge starts to the game kicking early goals.

The third quarter confirmed the Dragons had no plans of slowing down, extending their 51-point half-time lead with another five-goal quarter, as Bowman and fellow tall forward Charlie Dean started to form a deadly combination, well-complemented by the ever-dangerous Jack Mahony and Jacquin Mifsud, who combined for three goals in the term.

Sandringham will be looking to maintain its perfect start to season 2019 as it hosts the Sydney Swans academy to close out Saturday’s proceedings. Like many of the metro sides, the Dragons have a raft of key outs as trial games roll into town, with at least 14 changes from last week’s side that beat Oakleigh. With their typical midfield core out, the likes of Jackson Voss and Angus Hanrahan will get the opportunity to run through the middle, while Riley Bowman is sure to take up more rucking responsibility.

St Kilda father-son prospect Tyson Milne laid a team-high 10 tackles on debut, just ahead of Ryan Byrnes (nine).

The Cheltenham Secondary College student capped a lively display with a clever goal to help the Sandringham Dragons to a stirring 18-point win over Geelong Falcons at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

“He’s a hard-running half forward and has the same sort of goal sense as his dad,’’ Dragons coach Jeremy Barnard said of 16-year-old Milne, a bottom-ager.

“There’s been massive improvement from him in the last few weeks. A great kid.’’

#24 Bigoa Nyuon
Nyuon was thrown back, where he played a lot of football for the Stingrays last season. Opposed to man-mountain Aaron Clarke at times, the St Kilda NGA prospect was competitive in overhead contests and followed up well at ground level to provide calm use out of defensive 50. Made a nice run forward after a clean sweep of the ball on his defensive arc, getting it back at the opposite 50 to deliver inside. Can dominate games if he can continue to snap up big marks, but is still improving at both ends.

Just the Milney bits

On a day when his team was closed down, Sandringham Dragons coach Josh Bourke sensed an opening for Tyson Milne.
The Cheltenham Panthers product and son of former St Kilda star Steve played at half back and was among the best players in the Dragons’ nine-point loss to Eastern Ranges at Moorabbin on Sunday, 8.7 (55) to 6.10 (46).

“With opportunity you’re going to get players stepping up, and I thought Tyson played his best game for us by a long way,’’ Bourke said of the top-ager.

“He looked really composed at half back with ball in hand, set us up a couple of times.

“He started forward in the pre-season but probably struggled a bit. He’s looked a lot better down back. He’s clever with ball in hand, and going forward with it and at the game, he’s been really dangerous.

“He had 18 touches on the weekend. He defended quite well. We’re hopeful he’ll continue to develop in that small-back, half back role.’’

Sandringham travels to Victoria Park, Echuca on Saturday to play Bendigo Pioneers.

Great to read.

Just because his old man was one of the best small forwards of all time doesn’t mean Tyson has to play there.

On Biggie, he’s clearly a project player with heaps of talent that will take time. The exciting part is he can play Forward, Back and in the Ruck. Versatility with your talls is crucial in today’s footy.

Also the academy thing gives us a lot of versatility come draft time, we can end up with either grabbing him with our last pick if no-one bids on him or bundle together later picks if someone else rates him. If the bid comes in too high we can always let that team burn that pick on him.

Question has to be asked did they get those numbers because they were playing against weakened opposition or because they finally got the opportunity

Bit of background

The St Kilda NGA takes in the zones covered by NAB League clubs Sandringham Dragons and Dandenong Stingrays, and the South Metro and Frankston District junior leagues.

Northern (covering the Dragons and South Metro) and southern (Stingrays and Frankston District) “hubs’’ have been established.

About 600 players are involved.

“The talent program has been able to have contact with more kids than it ever has,’’ Henty said.

“With the resources we provide and the united approach, the industry has extended its reach.’’

The NGAs also have a focus on developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and multicultural talent.

Clubs receive draft concessions for players in their zones, and the Saints’ pool includes Dandenong Stingrays ruckman “Biggie’’ Nyuon and Sandringham Dragon Jacquin Mifsud.

Twenty boys aged between 16 and 18 have been signed as NGA talent concessions.

The St Kilda NGA also has a primary school component, and the Academy has put a particular emphasis on the City of Greater Dandenong, where the number of juniors clubs has dipped to three.

That will be Melbourne with Mac Andrew who is projected to be a certain top 20 picks while ours aren't in that bracket.

Owens and Windhager are definitely showing a bit. However, I wouldn't have them in the top 20 and they would need to be late bolters to make the first round. Not impossible, but lockdown in Victoria will not help.. these kids can't play if Victoria is in lockdown for 2-3 weeks. Then it will depend on exposed form with what is left of the season.
