How so? He is one of 4 emergencies. One of these will be announced as the medical sub one hour before the game. Could be murph, Kemp fogarty or whomever else was named as an emergency unless there is something I am missing?
Sorry, you're right. I misread the club's announcement when they said Owies was coming in for Harry and Fogarty was coming in as an emergency.
I read it as Fog was named as the emergency. Yes, still has 5 chances.

If he's sub this week and he doesn't get on the field does he still get a game against his tally ?

(I know .. no injuries in a game twice in a row .. as if..)

If not, will we see a "Newnesy, we need you to hobble off clutching your leg, miraculous recovery to follow" moment in the last quarter?

Sadly if Murphy does get to 300 he reputation will be ruined as the last 30 or so games were gifted. It's easy to forget how much a warrior he has been to this team. Anyone who calls him weak should just look at the hits he took for this club when we were down at the bottom of the ladder.

Not the first player to be carried to 300. Won't be the last.

If not for the hits he took earlier in his career would have gotten there easily and much sooner.

Can be sub his last 3 games. Was horrible when he came on. Pathetic chase on the wing towards the end, just gave up looking like he had played a full game and ran 15kms.

We had a fresh player come on at half time and the opposition kicked 7 goals. That fresh player had zero positive impact. Points to the fact that the club made a horrible selection decision.

He is clearly doing his best to crawl to 300.

It's not the way I wanted to remember Murph, was a gun once upon a time.

I hope he gets there and announce his retirement that week.

If he tries to play on for another year it will be a real disappointment.

No chance in Hell that he tries to play on. He knows it every bit as much as we know it.

I just wish that our supporter base could unite behind him getting there now instead of cannibalizing our own.

Does he deserve it on form? No, and I don't think anyone will argue against that.

Does he deserve it for the breadth of his career and what he's contributed to the Carlton Football Club? Damn straight.

Which is more important? Now that our finals chances have been snuffed out, the latter.

I'm not comfortable with him getting to 300 this way. His career is tainted now in my eyes and it doesn't sit well for me having his name up there with our genuine 300 game players.

I like things to be real and not fabricated. This is as fabricated as it gets and it has come at a cost to club integrity and player development.

The game passed Marc by a couple of years ago. You can say all you like but the handling of the situation has been a blight on the club.

For the short term at least, many supporters will not have the respect for Marc's achievements that they would have, should he had retired while on top of his game like most greats before him.

He is not in the same echelon as the great Craig Bradley, Bruce Doull and co. Timing is everything and this fiasco couldn't have come at a worst time for the club. Had we been playing great football and performing at where reasonable expectation would have us, this would have just crept by fairly inocuously. Reallity is however, we are well and truly under the spotlight!

Barring further injury Marc will now get to 300..........

I love Smurph .... bled for the club but let's be honest got paid damn well to.

Would have remembered him damn fondly finishing on 270 games .... his will to get to 300 just lowers the achievement for the other 300 club members .... all of them out and out legends who gave 100% until retirement.

Smurph for all my love for him, sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest.

the issue for me though is that it’s not as if this year saw a sharp decline in what was otherwise solid form from him up until the start of the season. He has been in free fall since at least last year. The unaccountable, one-way running game play, selling teammates under the bus etc has been a main feature of his game for the last 2-3 years in particular.

there is no doubt that at one point he was a great player. But he is a shell of that now and has been so for a sustained period.

Adding to that, we’ve had several great and loyal servants finish up within a season’s worth of games of a milestone. Sure there’s romance but carrying him to 300 does more to harm his reputation than improve it - the caliber of the players he joins; Bradley, Nicholls, Simpson, Silvagni and Doull. There is an undeniable disparity between those 5 and Murphy. Murphy would be lucky to carry their towels.

He doesn’t physically impact a contest if he does receive a handball can’t breakaway
Has lost a yard so can’t lead to space to pick up possessions in transition
Doesn’t tackle he’s a liability
I don’t enjoy watching him play it makes me cringe
I can’t see the upside to limping to a milestone to the detriment of the team
Just makes the MC and Murphy look delusional
Probably wont make any difference to team performance but it feels like it does
I’ve only seen a couple of Honeys games but pretty sure I remember him kicking a goal from 45 meters out
We have a dearth of forwards that con kick goals from outside 35 most of them struggle for distance then shank the kick Stephenson showed what a difference a player that can kick can do
Whether or not Honey tackles hard sprints into space to lead up kicks goals or not ide be excited to watch
I have zero interest in watching another game from Murphy

There’s 2 groups of players that played their 300th for carlton. Those that were heart and soul players until the end. The club legends in doull, Braddles, sos, Simmo and big nick. Then there’s the group that were carried. Murph and mick Martyn.

Murph was a gun. It’s hard to remember just how good he was back when he won the players mvp because of how bad he has been the last couple of seasons. He will get his 300th but it has been To the detriment of the future of the club as a whole.

The thing that does my head is that he just looks like he doesn’t want to be out there. Couple that with an inability to actually make any impact whatsoever and it’s now not even a question for me...he simply does not deserve to get a game at the moment.

If Teague gets him to 300 then for me his judgment should come into question and along with a raft of other poor decisions (selections, tactics etc) leads me to the conclusion he is not fit to be a head coach at this level.

Whoever approved the decision to give him another contract at the end of last year needs to be clipped as well because, aside from the Gold Coast game last season, he was poor last season as well.

It may seem overblown but getting him to 300 is symptomatic of everything that has been wrong with this club for some time. It’s a shame because he was a great player but it’s a tough business.

How many games did the great Ken Hunter play for Carlton? I had to look it up because the number is completely irrelevant. It’s 147.

As with all players, the legacy he created has very little to do with some arbitrary number, and everything to do with the stamp he put on the club and the sport through the way he played the game.

I have no idea if both MM and the club are prioritizing getting him to 300, regardless of whether he can properly contribute on the field, but if that’s the case it all seems a little sad to me.

I doubt that it is Teague getting him to 300 but rather the club as a reward for sticking with us through all the bad times.

Great post. No doubt there will be a sense of him being gifted 300, but for me he has earned the right to be gifted the games to get him there. He has been an easy target for a few years, but at his best, which went on for a long time, he was a star. The last time you looked anything like a contender (2011) he was incredible - B&F, AFLCA, your best in the finals.

For a few years you might feel he was a tad undeserving. Hopefully as time passes you will reflect on just how good he was.

it's obvious that he will get there unless he suffers an injury, don't know that it's worth all this discussion atm.

Sorry mate, but the discussion is hugely worth it.

The club have bent over backwards to do the right thing for Murphy. And rightly so, because he was one of our best footballers this century.

But HE has letdown everyone trying to help him shockingly for at least 2 years. He has been playing self preservation footy like i have NEVER seen before. At best going at half pace and at quarter intensity. It has been horrible to watch and damaging for all involved.

He both can't, and won't put in. And for at least 2 years. And the closer he's been limped to a "landmark" that shouldn't really mean much, the harder it's been to pull up his stumps. Just shocking situation he's put the club in, because he hasn't helped them to pick him at all. Not even attempted to compete. Just thinking that it's a right to get him there.

There is so much wrong with HIS approach to all this that his 300th will be completely hollow to nearly all....despite what the media department will diligently produce.
