Day 5 was amazing with a gold rush in the morning, let’s hope day 6 can deliver more success!

Highlights include:

* Izaac Stubblety-Cook in the men’s 200m breaststroke final (genuine gold chance)
* McLoughlin in the 800m freestyle final
* Women’s 200m butterfly final (Throssell)
* Chalmers defending his 100m freestyle gold from lane 7
* Men’s water polo vs Serbia
* Hockeyroos vs NZ
* Rugby 7’s Australia vs Japan. No one really knows what to expect from the defending Olympic champions.
* BMX men’s and women’s QF’s
* Women’s canoe SF (Jess Fox) and final (hopefully Fox). Can she do it this time?

Let’s go!

edit: I missed the race. It was Rohan Dennis bronze yesterday in Time Trial not Richie Porte (read on some sports site) . Evidently both veterans eyeing retirement now. Well ridden guys. You have done your nation proud.

Australia has a proud history in Trap shooting but not all is going to plan for our men, James Willett and Tom Grice. With 50 shots today to determine the finalists, both are currently sitting well outside the top 10 and needing something out of the box to make the final 6. Our women Laetisha Scanlan and Penny Smith are in far better shape currently ensconced in the top 10.

yeah im not taking moral advice from a guy who believes covid is a conspiracy, held his own tournament at the height of the european outbreak (which caused people at that tournament to become infected btw), and then sooked about having to go into a very short quarantine to play a purely optional tournament (the aus open) for a huge sum of money, barely months after we emerged from our state wide lockdown and the deaths of 800 people directly due to covid.

he's also been campaigning for years (as the player union rep mind you) to reduce the funding/prize money for lower levels in order to increase the prize money for the top few players.

the guy is a selfish slimy campaigner. no wonder he dgaf about other peopls issues.

Djokovic is easily the biggest piece of sh*t at the Olympics. What a garbage human being.
He's definitely a massively s**t bloke, but there are definitely worse human beings at the Olympics. Take this guy for instance

Facing 3 separate allegations of sexual assault and so the US authorities (IDK is its the USOC or their fencing federation) had to come up with a "protection plan" to keep him away from women

He may be a great tennis player, but he is a dick of a human being 😳

Just on the bolded, the Australian Open is a compulsory event for tennis players as a Grand Slam. Djokovic actually fought for the collective of the players for some improvements during quarantine including workout equipment so that players could complete some fitness work while in their rooms for 2 weeks. Djokovic did not try to improve quarantine for himself, he was fighting for others. Novak's quarantine in Adelaide was very comfortable compared to most other tennis players.
Djokovic and his Players Union is actually fighting for the opposite of what you have said! The Union he represents is fighting for increased pay for lower ranked players and better distribution.

Djokovic is easily the biggest piece of sh*t at the Olympics. What a garbage human being.
The Djokovic roasting thread this morning it looks like.
Just on his answer around pressure is privilege (which is a quote attributed to Billy Jean King and adorns the entry of Arthur Ashe Stadium), Djokovic was responding to a question around how is he dealing with the pressure of going to for gold and trying to complete the golden slam in tennis. Context is key here. He also went further in the answer, talking about trying the same thing in 2016 and failing at the Rio Olympics in trying to get the gold medal.

He is very popular in the athlete's village, lots of mentions how he is the most sought after athlete in trying to speak to or get a photo with. Djokovic could be one of the biggest stories of the games if he gets singles gold and try to be the first ever male tennis player to complete the Golden Slam.

I know a bloke who was ready to compete on the bar in gymnastics in the 2000 olympics. He fell on his head in a lead up competition and he is now a quadriplegic. You have to be brave and have your head right to do that sport.

Not sure what the big deal is that she pulled out.

First Australians in the Archery eliminations today.

Taylor Worth is through to the last 32 after a 6-0 win over his Indonesian opponent. Shot 29 on each of the 2nd and 3rd ends (10,10,9).
And he's scheduled for his 1/16 round against Wei Shaoxuan of China at 10:52 (SA time (11:22 Eastern)) if you have 7plus.

For me, the complaining about quarantine is more equivocal, but his COVID tournament and anti-vax stance is inexcusable and his latest comment is just poor, full stop - even if the original is a quote from Billie Jean King and you sort of get what he's trying to say.

Because:
- she's arguably the GOAT of women's gymnastics
- she was potentially in line to become the person with the 2nd most gold medals ever
- USA Gymnastics entire plan to win the team event was just "Simone will win it for us"
- NBC (the US broadcaster) made her a feature of their promotions (like like Channel 7 and the Campbell sisters for Rio)
- because she can do routines few others can, people not usually interested in gymnastics were looking forward to watching her
- being a black woman dominating a sport so much, certain aspects of the left made her into an idol and another example of why the world is unfair
- because its still unusual for elite athletes to not just "push through" whatever they are dealing with

Rowing has been good again this morning. Was hard to watch the Women's Pairs without Morrison and McIntyre in their push for a medal. Doubt they would have won but silver and bronze would have been in play if the typhoon didn't change the schedule.

Not a real fan of light weight classes. They introduced it into the Olympics to try and attract Africans and Asians into the sport but it really is just another chance for dominate nations to win medals. It hasn't really achieved what the World Rowing said it was trying to do, to keep it having 14 events when the IOC was looking at cut backs and gender equalization. So they introduced them and meant they could keep 14 events, go from 8 men + 6 women to 7 and 7.

ARCHERY CRIBS FOR NEW FOLLOWERS

Eliminations are shot in sets of 3 arrows each (max score 30)
The winner of each set gets 2 points.
If scores are tied in a set, they get 1 point each.
First to six points wins.
If scores are tied at 5-5 after 5 sets, there is a single arrow shoot-off, where closest to centre wins.

An arrow only has to break the line to count as the higher score.

Olympic archers shoot a distance of 70m. (Which I think is pretty amazing as a scrubber who shoots from 40).
