Best XI of the 1980's (interactive voting thread)

Was torn between Miandad and Crowe but having looked in more detail of their performances, Crowe had a wider spread of centuries against other nations in various parts of the world. I am a firm Martin Crowe vote after looking into it more. 188 v West Indies in the West Indies at the height of their power is impressive. 188 against Australia at the Gabba the next year also impressive. Only time a Kiwi team won a Test series in Australia, Crowe averaged around 70 v Australia that summer.
So Martin Crowe 4 and Allan Border 5 is my vote for today.
However, Miandad averaged 10 runs above Crowe.

Immy's a candidate to go straight in as a bowler with those numbers.
What do Kapil's & Hadlee's stats look like??
I think if you look at the numbers it's Imran, Botham Hadlee, Kapil Dev as batsmen and as a bowler, it's Imran, Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Botham.
Imran could be picked as a batsman with an average of 44 or as a bowler with an average below 20 and the best strike rate after Marshall of any bowler during the 80's. Hadlee could also be picked purely as a bowler, also with an average below 20 and the next best strike rate after Marshall and Imran.
Then it's a toss up between Botham and Kapil Dev for the all rounders position. The team will bat deeeeeep!

Based on stats can't argue with Khan. Botham does bring match winning potential kinda of like Flintoff who's record didn't reflect true impact on games.

1980's blessed for choice of all rounders - spinners another thing

Border and Miandad for mine. Crowe certainly belongs in the conversation. Richie Richardson as a bit of a smokey.

There's one really good one. Averages 15 with the bat, but he will be the number 11. Marshall averages nearly 19, but he'll be number 10.

Imran and Hadlee could both play, as Imran was the best of the 3 genuine all-rounders, where as Hadlee was a more bowling all-rounder. Imran would be at 6 and Hadlee at 8

I think once you get the wicketkeeper in the Hadlee will be at 9 I reckon.

I personally would have Dujon as keeper, who averages 31, which in that era was pretty good.

Would depend if you want one of Botham or Dev, or another out and out bowler as to who bats where.

That's who I've got. In the 80's Dujon averaged 36.
According to their results the top 5 bowlers of the 80's were Marshall, Imran, Hadlee, Kapil Dev and Botham.

You could make an argument for Dujon to bat at 7 and one of either Garner or Holding to play, and lose very little bowling wise.

I taken Hadlee out of my 70's team for Holding and going to pop Hadlee in my 80's team. So I count Holding as more 70's than 80's player it gives me room to include Imran and Hadlee as bowlers in the 80's team and Botham as the allrounder. which is how I really view them. Imran and Hadlee were gun bowlers that could bat a bit. Botham was a good bowler without being as special as these guys but as an allrounder he was dangerous as saw in 1981 Ahses Series. Turned the series on it's head with couple of crazy innings. Kapil will not be making my team. No room for him once I got Hadlee, Imran and Botham.
I think my keeper going to be Dujon.
So in my team I would have Dujon or Botham batting 6, the other 7 and Imran 8, Hadlee 9, Marshall 10

AB has walked into this side, whilst in a bit of a shock Javed gets in ahead of Martin Crowe

1980's All-star XI (batting order subject to change)

01
02
03 IVA Richards
04 AR Border
05 Javed Miandad
06
07
08
09 MD Marshall
10
11

Time to add to the bowling attack. Let's select another OPENING BOWLER to share the new ball with Marshall as well as a SPIN BOWLER.

Only one true candidate for spinner; Abdul Qadir. Looking ahead to 90's it's complete opposite with lots of spinners & few all rounders.
Hadlee is best seamer for decade

Hadlee and Qadir for mine. How many quicks all rounders are being picked?

Was thinking of deviating from the format used in the 70's thread by picking four frontline bowlers this time around, and then letting people decide if they want to select another all-rounder at No. 6, or let Viv & AB roll their arms whilst we select another specialist bat at 6. We'll see how we go.

Garner will be my number 11 bat after I move Holding to the 70's team.
I got no spinner except for part timers Border and Viv.
I think that argument has merit, but a spinner is required for the format.

I think it was the opposite argument of there being so many great all rounders that you don't need as many frontline bowlers.

Essentially we'll have the choice of going with either four bowlers/all-rounders, or five, depending on what people feel is best for team makeup.

I think there was an argument for having 3 front line bowlers and 2 all rounders such was the depth in quality. Keep in mind both Viv and AB can roll the arm over as well.

Also, who would you choose as Captain?
