Video of our first "premiership" - August 3, 1940 v Richmond at the MCG.

The event was to raise funds for WW2.

Actual video of it...unreal. 30 seconds in is video of Jack Dyer, and Bill Mohr kicking a goal for us at the end (#10).

Mohr held the club goal kicking record at 735 at the end of his career in 1941. His record stood for 51 years before Lockett broke it in Round 15, 1992.

Nice one George. There weren't too many better than the great Billy Mohr. Had to chuckle at the journalists description of a marking contest as an "incident"

Arguably one of the greatest trades in St.Kilda / AFL recent history?

A future second round pick for a club captain, a consistently elite performer, a future multiple BnF player and a Brownlow contending superstar. Absolutely unreal.

A better trade that year was by Freo.

They traded pick 23 for Brad Hill. They got 54 games out of him then turned him into picks 10, 58, a future second rounder, a future fourth rounder, and Blake Acres. Pretty solid return on investment there.

That sure is a lot of stuff they got for him but really the pick 10 and future 2nd were the only good things, the rest junk.

In fact the future second probably ended up at about pick 40 so not sure that's fantastic either.

We got a future 3rd round pick which went towards Highmore.
After the wash it worked out to be pick 10 and GOAT.

In a balls to the wall rebuild, or in a clear and unadulterated upswing I'd share the opinion that it would perhaps be time for Gears to give it away.

But given we've got at least half a dozen clear and obvious departures before we even get to "will some/all of Coffield/Ross/Dunstan/Billings leave" and other cases like "Will we keep one, both or neither of Clav and Joyce", I'd much prefer Geary hanging around than an extra draft pick beyond the 3rd round.

Agreed. As long as they make Steele sole captain, Geary being the last player on the list offers us more with what he brings in leadership and helping develop the younger defenders than whoever his replacement would be.

Agree, as long as he isn't keeping Patto or even Connolly from getting their share of games. If Gears plays 22 next year then I suspect that would be bad, but if he plays 10 in the ones and 10 in the twos then that sounds good to me.

They have turned him into Caleb Strong which was a pretty solid return in itself. He's dropped off a bit since his first season but looks a very good player.

It's a waste of a spot IMO. With shorter lists I'd rather have some one like Perris who has some upside.

Shame for Paddy but a good chance for Marshall to stand up.
In all likelihood, Marshall is going to be the number one man for most of the next six or seven years. Got to find a way to translate his strong performances into a stronger performance from the midfield as a whole.
