According to the wonderful AFL Tables website, both the Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions have goal-front accuracy of 52.3%.
Expanding these percentages to an extravagant five decimal places, the Bears' 2852.2606 (19718) is 52.25357% accuracy and the Lions' 7524.6876 (52020) is 52.25000%, with the Bears having the edge by 0.00357%.
Let's say one of the Lions' behinds had instead gone out on the full, then their revised 7524.6875 (52019) would represent 52.25363%, giving them 0.00006% greater accuracy than the Bears.

Of the twelve 'traditional' VFL clubs, all were successful in winning Reserves and Under 19's premierships when these competitions were in operation, with the exception of the South Melbourne Swans reserves team. A reserve grade premiership eluded the Swans in the 81 years the reserves was run from 1919-1999.

The AFL Reserves competition finished after the 1999 season and the Under 19s after the 1991 season, but over the years these competitions produced some interesting Grand Final match ups that look weird taking into account their league counterparts:

  • The Bulldogs defeated Essendon in the penultimate Reserve Grade grand final in 1998, but at league level the Bombers and Bulldogs have not met in the finals since 1953.
  • The 1997 Reserves Grand Final saw Richmond defeat Hawthorn, but at that stage the Hawks and Tigers had never met a senior AFL finals match, and would not do so until 21 years later when they played a 2018 Qualifying Final.
  • Melbourne defeated North Melbourne in the 1993 Reserves Grand Final, one of a number of Reserves and Under 19s Grand Finals played between the Demons and Kangaroos. At League level there have been some finals meetings between the Dees and Roos, but Melbourne and North have never played off for a premiership.
  • Carlton beat Melbourne in the 1990 Reserves Grand Final, reversing the Reserves GF result of 1984 which saw the Demons beat the Blues, but in the Seniors Carlton vs. Melbourne is a Grand Final combination yet to come up.
  • Fitzroy defeated Geelong in the 1989 Reserves Grand Final, but in the seniors one has to go way back to 1923 to find a finals match between the Lions and Cats.
  • The 1987 Reserves Grand Final was won by Carlton over St. Kilda, these teams rarely meeting in finals at senior level, the most recent such match the 1972 Preliminary Final.
  • Carlton's 1986 Reserves Grand Final was at the expense of Footscray. The Blues and Bulldogs have never met in a senior final to date, despite being in the same finals series quite a few times.
  • Melbourne beat Geelong for the 1981 Under 19's flag, but at senior level while Melbourne and Geelong have been strong at the same time there has never been a GF played between the Demons and Cats.
  • Geelong's 1980 Reserves Premiership, the second of a hat-trick for the Cats, was won over South Melbourne in a high scoring match. In the seniors, the Swans and Cats went 71 years - 1934-2005 - without playing in September.
  • Richmond beat Footscray for the 1977 Reserves Premiership, the teams also playing off for the 1968 Under 19's flag, but at senior level finals series containing both the Tigers and Dogs are rare, and they have to date never played a senior final.
  • Richmond narrowly beat Melbourne in the 1975 Under 19's Grand Final, avenging a 2-point win by the Demons over the Tigers in the 1970 Reserves Grand Final. However by 1975 over 30 years had passed without a senior finals series containing both the Demons and Tigers, and this drought would continue until it was broken at 77 years in 2018 when Richmond and Melbourne both qualified for the finals.
  • Fitzroy thrashed Footscray in the 1974 Reserves Grand Final, but at senior level there was only one finals series from 1925-1996 that contained both the Bulldogs and Lions with this being 1944, and the Dogs and Lions didn't play a finals match that year.
  • Collingwood players in 1958 celebrated their upset win over Melbourne in the Grand Final with gusto, but the Magpies Reserves team would not have been so happy, beaten narrowly by Hawthorn that season. At senior level finals matches between Hawthorn and Collingwood have become noteworthy for often they don't happen rather than how often they do. From 1975-1991 inclusive every Senior Grand Final except 1982 contained either Hawthorn or Collingwood, but never Hawthorn and Collingwood. Despite frequently making the finals, the Hawks and Magpies went 33 years (1978-2011) without meeting in a final, and there was also no GF meeting between them in the Under 19s..
  • St Kilda's only Under 19s premiership came in 1957 against South Melbourne, but with finals appearances for the Saints and Swans few and far between they seldom met in the finals at senior level, until the late 1990s.
One GF match up that eluded at all levels was North Melbourne vs. St Kilda. It took 72 years for the Saints and Roos to appear in the same finals series in 1997, but there was no GF between North and the Saints either at Reserves or Under 19's level either.

It looks as though North Melbourne will take the wooden spoon this season. Premiership droughts are reasonably well-documented, and so here is each club's longest wooden spoon drought (assuming North takes it this year).

A few more interesting statistics from Reserves and Under 19 Grand Finals when compared to Senior Results:

  • St Kilda won back to back Reserve Grade Grand Finals in 1942 and 1943, both over Fitzroy. This is interesting as at League level the Lions were very strong and the Saints easy-beats in these years, but also interesting is that in Senior football after the teams met in the 1913 Grand Final (Fitzroy winning over St Kilda), the Saints and Lions were never again in the same finals series, this ending after 83 years with the Fitzroy Brisbane Bears merger at the end of the 1996 season.
  • Richmond has met all Victorian clubs (discounting fellow 1908 entrant University) in at least one senior GF except for St Kilda. However there were never any Saints vs. Tigers Grand Finals in the Reserves or Under 19s either.
  • There has never been a 'heaven vs. hell' GF between St Kilda and Melbourne in the Firsts, but the Demons defeated the Saints in the 1933 Reserves Grand Final.
  • Finals matches between Melbourne and South Melbourne/Sydney have been rare at senior level with no GF between them, but the teams did play the 1956 Reserves Grand Final, the Demons beating the Swans.
  • The longest current drought for GF combinations that have actually happened is Essendon vs. Swans, which last met in a GF in 1912 and there were no GF's in Reserves or Under 19s featuring Bombers vs. Swans. Carlton and Fitzroy last met in a GF in 1906, however the Blues and Lions did meet in the 1979 Under 19s GF with Carlton victorious.
  • Footscray was the first of the 1925 expansion teams to win a premiership at any level, when they took out the 1936 Reserves Flag. Who were there opponents and how much did they win by? They beat Melbourne by 51-points, as they would in their first senior GF victory in 1954.

Fascinating stats, i think i might have made this observation before but the relatively old sides of the 1919-1920 era, perhaps the significant percentage of young men fighting in W.W.1 may have taken a lot of the youth out of the playing pool at the time? It's an outlier that matches the similar figures for the W.W.2 years. By contrast the Dogs Premiership side of 1954 i think had an average age of not even 23 years. Of course nowadays with footballers being professional they will on average now tend to be among the older groupings, but it's quite illuminating seeing the impact the two world wars had on the playing ages of VFL sides of those eras.

North Melbourne's loss to the Sydney Swans tonight has ensured that they will win their first wooden spoon in 49 years, with no Kangaroos side finishing on the bottom of the ladder since 1972.

The 2021 Kangaroos are also one of the rare wooden spoon teams - a side that has been last at the completion of each round of the season from start to finish. Even with terrible teams this seldom happens. The most recent example of a team being last all season was in 2008, where Melbourne started the season with a 104-point drubbing from Hawthorn, and the Demons were still in last position when the final siren of the home and away season sounded 5 months later.

Essendon finished with the same total of goals and behinds at the end of each quarter in their recent game versus Gold Coast, finishing with 2.2, 8.8, 12.12 and 14.14. This is the first instance since 2007.

Whoops, sorry about that, chief. That's quite embarrassing. I usually read the Weird Football Scores thread regularly so I don't know how I missed that post. I was obviously not thinking clearly after the Bulldogs bad loss on the weekend. Subconsciously I probably wanted to see your table so I could witness a positive red, white and blue image.
Ron The Bear, I will now go to Weird Football Scores and give you a like for beating me to the punch. In the future, to quote Cool Hand Luke, I will try to "get my mind right."

It isn't unusual for teams to suffer a premiership hangover - a poor or underachieving season following a premiership season - but SANFL team West Adelaide has taken this to new lows in recent years.

In 2015, the West Adelaide Bloods won their first premiership since 1983 over the WWT Eagles, but after breaking a 32 year flag drought they did something extremely rare at this level of football - slumped from first to last in 2016. And it wasn't a 'commendable' bottom placing with 5 or 6 wins in an even season and only narrowly finishing last, they were truly abysmal with a 2-16 win loss record. If supporters of Wests thought 2016 was an aberration, they were sadly mistaken. In 2017 Wests finished 9th (second last) with 5-13, 2018 more commendable with 7th and an 8-10 record but still nowhere near the finals, back to last in 2019 with 2-16, last again in 2020 with 2-1-11 and this year Wests are again languishing at the bottom of the ladder with just 2 wins (achieved early in the year), with a dismal percentage, guaranteed of a third successive bottom placed finish and riding a long losing streak full of terrible hidings, such as being held goal-less by Sturt.

As I mentioned, it isn't rare for teams to suffer premiership hangovers or for some teams to decline after a premiership win especially if this was an older team and player retirements and attrition come into play, but usually this is a gradual decline over 3 or 4 seasons. I've never seen a team at high level football like Wests fall down so fast and be so bad for so long immediately after winning a premiership. If there's other cases like this I can't name them off-hand.
