Would guess that McAndrew will be the closest thing to it

He was the easy and obvious option at the mid season draft. Whether that excludes us going again at year end I don't know but it's pretty important we show a pathway out of the academy. It's a bit fickle but the motivation that gives is pretty important in retaining the later age groups

Just watched the Vic Metro V Vic Country Challenge Game (result VM 105-49 VC)

Thoughts - Goater is much better than i thought, Ward had a strong game, Daicos had a lot of the ball but was a bit wasteful, Knevitt is much better than i thought, Chesser, Howes, Gibcus, Clarke and Sinn were a bit disappointing with their lack of impact and Sinn got injured again, MacDonald, Hobbs and Conway were impressive imo, Owens and Windhager showed the saints have 2 quality NGA's this year, Vic Metro have great depth once again whereas VC have some issues with depth which is becoming the norm, VC have quality every year but lack a bit of depth especially in their forward line this year, Rachele had some good moments in midfield in the 2nd half, Molan played one of his better games of late, Soligo provided a lot of run from the wing, Andrew was solid without dominating.

I count quality plays during games for each player which can be hard when the commentators get the names wrong about 10% of the time, but heres the scores i gave the best players for those who are interested, even though i heard people say Ward was the best i thought Goater just pipped him, but i guess 2 goals could be argued as a more valuable contribution?

VM Points
1. Goater - 15
2. Ward - 14 (2 goals)
3. Daicos - 14 (2 goals)
4. Owens - 10 (1 goal)

12. Preston - 6
13. Darcy - 5 (2 goals)
14. Dib - 5
15. Sinn - 5 (inj last quarter)

Hey Davo-27 thanks for sharing. I only watched the second half and was enamoured with goater. He's got some elite elite upside imo. You think hes a stretch at our first pick? Maybe would need the champs to really rocket up the boards, but I like him at the range of our pick now

if we have pick 6 he is possibly an option.

he pretty much played the same in all 4 quarters, he has good acceleration off the mark and has a good inside/outside game, i would say he might break into the top 10 if he continues to play in this way, i hope it wasnt a one off.

Might watch the first half also. I liked his contested game but ability to break out of stoppages. Turn of speed is something our midfield mix lacks. A few other draft watchers have said he has tools play HBF and hff also but lacks a big engine.

I really like this list, it has some very independent thought in it and some of your clarifications add to the understanding. Thanks for putting this out.

We may look back in time and find Hobbs was the pick of this draft.

What is going to be interesting is how the u19s are considered in the draft, particularly later in the draft pool. It is possible there is a good number who would be better selections than some of the top 50 generally speaking. On the NAB League boys, I agree with you re Sinn and Chesser, both these boys came into the year with big wraps, injuries aside, I do not think their football has carried them through to be 1st round selections this year. Long is interesting, you dont see him as high on most lists. I would have him as a top 10 if he was able to play, I think Ward will be ahead of him due to exposed form and Wilmott can be anything, he could be 10-30 as a draft pick. Zac Taylor not on the list? My bolter is Judson Clarke, he could go higher with his scoring ability, maybe a bias there I really like the way he plays.

Jackson Archer looked really solid up until his last few games, I agree with you on where he may fall and pretty sure North will be taking him.

Zac Taylor gets a bit of the ball, but theres just something about his game im not liking as an early pick, more a late pick/rookie from my PoV, but i have seen only a small sample size of the calder boys and the northern academy guys as well as some WA talent so its a bit of a blind spot.

u19's are interesting, i nearly added Mitch Cleary, Noah Gribble and Chance Doultree to the top 50, but i decided against it, theres a handful of others that are doing well also that clubs could take a chance on especially the ones in the state teams

because of no NAB League in 2020 a few of the guys who had big wraps going into the season have yet to really perform and i cant keep naming them so high when they are injured for half the season and most of their games are not performing to a standard you would hope they would perform at, these interrupted seasons and the non 2020 season have been a big disruption to some of these guys development unfortunately, Long is the exception because even though he to is injured he put in high level performances prior to being injured, i saw approx 4 of his games and liked how he played, whether it was in the centre and around the ground as a mid or in the forward line.

i like a lot of the Northern Knights guys as well as Sandringham and its no surprise they are both near the top of the ladder, GWV is another team with some quality talent and when Oakleigh get their private school boys back they might surprise a few even though they are near the bottom atm.

Judson Clarke and Connor MacDonald i like from Dandenong, Judson kicking 5 in the trial game helped boost his profile, he added a bit of spark in the challenge game, but wasnt as effective.

i think the biggest changes to my list are Josh Goater and Mitch Knevitt jumping into my 2nd tier of players after catching up on some games recently, after posting i thought to myself, maybe Knevitt should be a few spots later than 12 and Chesser should be higher than 27, also Andrew seems to be a near certainty to go top 20 so maybe he should be closer to 25 or so?, Sinn is out of my top 10, but he is probably 10-15 at this stage for me, i'll leave it as it is, but i may have to edit those 4 in my next list but the rest of the list im happy with though.

Any team landing Sinn at pick 16 would be over the moon. Would love his pace, run and carry and lethal left peg at the Hawks.
Sinn has the game to be around pick 5 or so, but he seems injury prone and has not played to a standard i would like to see from him, so ive decided after many games of hoping he would come good to drop him down the order a little, i see him as a player closer to pick 10 or so now, he has some great traits, but has yet to put it all together and others are performing and pushing past him into the top 10 imo.

in a way theres different ways you can judge talent, the first is where you project their raw potential to be at(elite, top 10, first round, top 30 ect) then theres how they are performing and at what level they perform at, then you try to gauge a median spot, so Sinn has the raw potential to be a top 5-10 pick, but his performances/injury problems are of a pick 20 or so, so the mean is pick 10-15, thats a rough understanding of how i look at it, its more complex than that, but i hope it explains my thoughts on my new top 50.

Tall blonde mid from Geelong(I think 190-odd cm?), very clever in tight and was very good for Vic Country in the challenge game, I believe Essendon are looking for tall mids and he was the best one available at their pick imo.

Yes generally that's a given, as I don't think many poorly skilled players get mentioned on bigfooty, by the draft watchers, he is one I either missed or was missing in the early rounds of the NAB League but has made an impact recently, edps has mentioned him a bit over the last couple weeks and so I wanted to see him play for myself and I was very impressed by his game.

looking through past threads, seeing the hits and misses, even making 1 mistake hurts and we make many each year, the ones that hurt the most are the ones where you go with the flow or trust other peoples evaluation of talent, 2020 was a write off, what a crap year tbh, so this year im going solo, im doing my own thing, i hope you enjoy and i hope i limit the mistakes i may make.

i'll just call this top group elite i guess, players in brackets mean they are on the border of the tier

Elite Tier: Horne, Daicos, Darcy (Callaghan) Ranges:1-3 (4th)

Top Tier: Erasmus, Goater, Hobbs, Fahey, Johnson, Roberts (Sinn, Rachele, Ward, Long) Ranges:5-10 (11-14) for me there seems to be a clear top 10 from my PoV atm

2nd Tier: Amiss, Van Rooyen, Browne, Knevitt, Sonsie, MacDonald, Conway, Draper, Jackson, Wanganeen-Milera, Gibcus, Soligo, Chesser, Banks, Molan, Wilmot, Andrew (Clarke, Brown, Curtis, Williams, Burgoyne, C.Hamilton, Owens) Ranges:15-31 (32-38)

38 all up, was thinking maybe Lohmann or Warner and Dittmar - WA could work their way in or Uwland from GC-A?, work in progress, but this is how i see it atm...

South Adel V North Adel (quality moment count)

#33 Horne-Francis - (6) gets caught too often, needs to quicken his poss, too often taking the 2nd or 3rd option and putting himself under pressure i think, got belted twice, does a lot of unrewarded work in the contests, tough bugger for a youngster, not one of his best games and again makes me want to put Daicos as the number 1 pick, he has great speed but he takes too long at times, needs to be quicker of mind and take the first option because i love his game i just wish he would stamp himself as the clear pick 1, but im starting to think it might be Daicos or Darcy because i have more faith they can dominate a champs game if it goes ahead whereas im not so sure Horne can dominate a champs game with his delayed use of the footy and if he was delayed because he is making quality decisions and created space that would be good, but he often delays and puts himself under pressure or gets caught and doesnt seem to learn from it which is a concern, i still rate him highly because he has so many great traits, he just needs to quicken his decision making imo.

#44 Roberts - (12) really impressive game, imo the best of the 3 youngsters, clean and quick poss, quick of mind, really like what i see and confirms to me he is a top 10 quality mid in this draft, sometimes hitting team mates other times gaining meterage for his team, gets involved in a lot of contests, beat Andrew Moore an ex afl player and captain at Box Hill who i think is a solid footballer as i saw him for a few seasons at Box Hill and know he isnt an easy beat, so good scalp for the youngster imo, played mostly wing but had a few runs in the midfield, looked good in both positions, also can go forward so has good flexibility, couple of poor inside 50 kicks, but in general i like how he moves the ball on quickly, probably needs to lower his eyes more often is the only criticism i could throw his way.

#45 Draper - (7) lost most of his first 10 contests, too often ending up lying on the ball in a tackle, got an easy goal from a defender kicking it straight to him 20m out in straight in front for a gift goal, took 2 strong contested marks on leads(i dont know if they were official contested marks or just strong marks on a lead with a defender right behind him), had another lead with separation and centred the ball to a player in space, had another sharp handball in close, nice couple of leads on the half forw and a good inside 50 so had a few moments, but overall i would say lost/neutralised 70% of contests, but for a debut it was decent and got some space late in the last quarter when the heat went out of the game.

none of them changed my thoughts on where i think they rank, maybe Horne not being clear cut 1st pick, i think Horne is still very good just behind Daicos because ive seen so many quality games from Daicos, Horne is just such a beast physically i wish he got it more and used it more quickly, Roberts looks top 10 to me and Draper looks late first early 2nd round to me still after this game.

Would be stoked with Goater or Erasmus at our first pick.

Think Judson Clarke (despite that first name) would be worth a look with one of our picks in the early 20's. Zac Taylor also. We need players that offer a point of difference and I think all of these boys would.
