Just a random thing - did anyone else notice the groundsman guy out in the middle at half time last night "testing" the surface with some sort of measuring device...I have never noticed that before and am wondering if there were concerns about moisture/hardness etc.

It’s standard procedure before every game.

Hugh and JBerry going into the guts more the last 2 weeks has made a world of difference. I was worried when Lachie came back that Hugh would be relegated back out to his wing role, but he seemed to attend more centre bounces again last night which is good.

Also noticed Bailey had quite a go in there as well last night. At one stage I believe the 3 of them went in there together.

It’s good to see some other mixes in there at times other than the usual Neale, Lyons, Zorko set up.

Good win and it needed to be considering we were playing a bottom 3 side. Nice to see Charlie and Daniher kicking 9 between them and Joe probably could have kicked 5. That's the best game he has played for the club. McStay clunking marks and kicking goals in the last month is great to see. Clubs will be thinking twice now who they play on him. Cockatoo had added an X factor to the side and even if he doesn't get a lot of kicks if he can kick a goal or two a match and have hand in another he is doing his job and not to mention the grunt he brings. I saw one Collingwood player go to remonstrate with him last night then realised it was Cocky and thought better of it. He intimidates the opposition with his bulk. Also like him and Ah Chee together in the forward. Cal also played his best game for the year last night.

Hopefully Adams back in this week and then we are looking nice and strong again with him and Gardiner back into the defence. I have a read few people say Adams for Lester - if that's the case Lester can consider himself very unlucky.. he was excellent again last night. I don't think enough of you appreciate the one on one wins he has. Just pops up in the right spots. Prior is probably the obvious omission from last night.

And well done the Big O - Grundy won the hit outs but didn't dominate and Oscar was way better than him around the ground and probably on 50% less pay :)

Agree it's silly, buy its symbolic for the rest of society.

Masks on indoors
Masks off exserting at the gym, Masks on when you are winding down/socialising/leaving the gym

You have millions of people watching, its not the actually chances of catching COVID that is the concern, it's saying - 'sometimes the rules are silly but every little act counts'.. its consistant with Mask rules in other settings.
I agree it is nothing more than symbolic... if the millions watching need that to get the pro mask message across we really are as stupid as they seem to think we are, are the millions really at home watching them singing with masks on and then thinking oh gee doh I guess I should wear my mask.

Anyway that enough of a derail, GO YOU LIONS and Port next weekend!

Ah chee looks really confident in his attack on the footy right now, still not a high disposal player and maybe he will never be - but who cares, disposal counts don't win games.

What has been great about him and cocky the last few weeks is that they have really straight lin attacked the footy and bashed through the contest, which creates pressure, and helps get the ball moving forward. Whenever we get the ball going forward through tap ons or punches it helps cover up some of our weaknesses running defensively.

Dan McStay is a whole new player to the one three years ago. I watched him off the ball quite closely and he works a lot harder now. Even better he demands the ball and moves like it is meant for him in the packs. I watched his positioning at pack marks and his movement has increased wonderfully - full of intent, confident, focussed. With that has come an improvement in his goal kicking. I think a lot of it stems from the fact that he plays like he belongs.

strangely, being out of the team with injury at the start of the year may have been the best thing for him. He came back knowing that the team thought he was important, the coaches knew they needed him and he started playing like it. Then with Hipwood out I feel he has realised he can be the key forward alongside Joe. And he has been playing like it.

A player transformed. I think when Hipwood does return, McStay will be just as big a danger and will feel very much a part of the three tall forward structure rather than a bit player.

There were a lot of positives from last night and overall a very good team game.

There were negatives however and for me they were at the back.

- if Payne had turned the ball over multiple times like Andrews did there would be howls for his head. Defensively there was also a few mistakes especially early. Harris needs to do better against better opposition.

- people have been very charitable about Gardner’s game. To say he was rusty is a huge understatement. Positioning was often poor and mistakes were plentiful. Actually lucky not to concede more than he did. He needs to regain match form quickly or he will be a liability like he was a few years ago.

- I am not one who has called for Birchall to be sacked in recent weeks but yesterday two goals came directly from him trailing 5 meters behind his opponent. Too slow and effort lacking on those occasions.

The majority of the Collingwood goals came from these three. Not what you would be hoping from these three given their experience.

Yeah but if they didn't the 'yeah but this rule, that rule, what about footy' whingers would have a field day.

The one I don't get is the coaching panel in a tiny box with them all under their chin, are they not in doors?

And yes - great win. Lezz go.

I don’t think anyone has pumped up Gardiners game.

Defence is definitely our biggest flaw at the moment

I was thinking the same thing but thought maybe these guys overall have enough credits in the bank to think they'll be sharper against quality opposition.

Harris has been noticeably lackadaisical on occasions this year , then when you look at the stats at the end of the game he's still a powerful force . Needs to show a bit more urgency sometimes. Especially with his decision making.

Everyone we've brought back from injury has taken a couple of weeks to hit their straps and hoping Gardiner is in the same boat.

Birchall has potentially only 2 games left in his career so here's hoping he pulls something out to make it 4 or 5.

For me it showed the importance of getting at least 1-2 games into Darcy and Marcus because they'd be rusty a.f.

Birchall was great offensively but was much worse this week defensively compared to last week when given a defensive job against Freo - assume that was a factor.

I don't see how this is controversial.

One is a lot better defensively, so a few accidents on the other side is not an awful trade-off. Would still be a net positive.

One isn't as good defensively (yet), so a few accidents is a lot tougher when he's not also holding his man largely ineffective.

When Fullarton first played in the ruck he never got near the contest. He's still not offensively effective in any hit outs but he's now at least putting in a better body to body contest and recovers quickly.

So if he builds up some more and gets more confidence with more games I can see some hope there. As a back up ruckman.

I can't help but see similarities with Steph Martin. Let's hope for a similar progression.

His tackling is awesome. He's a smart tackler if thats a thing. He always seems to tackle then grab the arm or block the handball or similar. He get's frees and also loose balls for others to swoop on.

fair enough i reckon. harris has been really dodgy for weeks, his disposal has been ordinary and dangerous. i'd like to give him a rest this week and bring in adams in his place.

Not the time of the season for experimentation.

We need as close as we can get to our finals side on the park this week.

Berry's best game for the season. I'm still waiting to see him really get back to his taking-on-the-tackler best, but he's getting back into his stride which is great for us.

Really impressed at Nakia as well. He's starting to hit contests. Like, run solidly into contests at high speed. Not quite as solidly as Mitch, but smarter. Really keen to see him properly back to his best and glad at the improvement already...

I don’t think anyone has pumped up Gardiners game.

Every time a player comes back from a lengthy injury, it seems that there is inevitably disappointment and criticism about how the player has performed first up. Or second up.

A few here were on J Berry's back since he came back into the side, forgetting what a valuable contributor he's been when fit and firing. Last night he was good, without being back to his best.

Also some pretty unfair comments about Lachie over the year in a season where he has had multiple injury issues.

Gardiner is easily best 22 but also seems to have come in for some criticism for making poor decisions and numerous mistakes. TBH, I thought he was OK. I'll have to have a look at a replay but from memory, I can't remember any absolute howlers that cost us on the scoreboard. Unlike Andrews, who had two terrible skill errors that cost two goals,

People sometimes have short memories about how well returning players perform when they are truly match fit.

If we are playing our best 22 coming into finals , we have to accept that it's going to take a match or two to bring them up to scratch when they come back into the side
