SAINTS TARGET SWANS BIG MAN

St Kilda has reportedly set its sights on Swans tall Hayden McLean

Rowan Marshall has emerged as a star of the future for the Saints who, according to AFL.com, are looking to form a long term ruck partnership.

McLean is off contract at the end of the year and could provide support to Marshall while also an option to play forward.

The 22-year-old is one of a number of Swans players coming off contract as they look to manage a tightening salary cap.

Why would they let him go? Future ruck and just 22years old?

Inevitable given his injuries...but a shame. Had some great games. I know he got under people's skins, but I liked the mongrel factor he had. The bloke was the only BadAss in the team there for awhile.
Wish him well

I'll always treasure him going hard at that little s**t Ballantyne during our last game @ Subiaco in 2017 ...

But you can't just replace a 2x B&F winner and a quality player like Billings with a couple of 3rd round draft picks.
They need to earn their place by playing in the reserves for 42 years and demand selection.
Trading out existing players doesn't make you better. You have to draft ready made stars and we haven't drafted any stars since 1946 and even then it was by luck because we've been sh*t at drafting since 1788!!
We need to make everything better by doing nothing and taking no risks!
I liked it better when Richo was in charge. There was a man who could tell the difference between a turnip and a parsnip, and he had the gumption to do nothing when action was demanded.
These kids you want to put faith in are nothing but a bunch of lay-abouts, texting with their X-boxes and their googles. They wouldn't know which end of a mule to put the harness on let alone how to stand and deliver a drop punt to a 1 on 1 forward contest.
Like they say: any man who sells a prize pig on a Monday won't get his apples in by frost.
We're after success here after all, and you won't get that by changing things!
Shroom season?

Not untrue though.

I highly doubt he‘s going anywhere.

I seem to recall he lives two minutes from RSEA Park, and loves not having to drive across town for training ... he's shown me enough to justify a deal on the table, given he had no AFL pre-season, minimal VFL, and has generally brought something to our forward line whenever he's on the ground.

Apologies if has been posted but:

According to Hawks insider with a very good track record (Hodgeball for those of you playing at home):

Josh Battle is disgruntled and gettable. Wants to be a forward instead of a Mr Fix It and wouldn't be surprised if he isn't at Saints in 2022 despite contract. Collingwood and Melbourne went hard a few years ago.
I like it when clubs are chasing contracted players. Have to pay a premium.

Hawks have Picks 25 and 27. Interested?

If Bruce got 38 and 51 I doubt they are giving either of those up.

You're absolutely correct. It should have been band 4.
There's an outside chance one or both of them would get band 3 which would be great.

The turd in the ointment is that band 4 will probably fall on the wrong side of our NGA bids so we have to trade them up or out in some way.

I think both will be band 3. We could end up with back to back picks in the twenties. It’s possible we may need to use one of them on an NGA bid. Windhager is more likely but Owens will be around a similar pick.

Our forward structure and delivery has improved greatly since battle had a chance. It was bomb it on Max's King's head 101.
Battle was one of the biggest culprits of the long bomb. Maybe part of the reason why our delivery has improved is that he got injured and now Membrey seems to be inside 50 a lot more.

Battle has a great tank, but no so quick over the first 30 on the lead. As a forward, I feel that Sharman has better natural craft and I wouldn't play him ahead of Marshall or membrey. As a defender, highmore and Wilkie are far superior in both one on one and also intercepting. As a wing he couldn't accumulate at all. There in lies the problem with battle...he would be an excellent 2nd or third tall forward, like a weiderman, mihocek or a mcstay and I think we have that covered, especially if Bing is coming

You make some good points but I’m factoring in age and trying to project player development and I still come up with billings as a must keep and ross not far behind him, dunstan I see as expendable.

I won’t rate our young players here for fear of starting another Barney but suffice to say I don‘t project many to be more than good ordinary C grade journeymen. We certainly can’t replace billings and Ross with second rounders or at a discount so yeah I’d show them some love and chuck another 5 - 10 % on their offers to lock them away.

I think we can play finals next year and still have significant list turnover, take our first rounder, two nga players and a trade or two at the lower end and send off the obvious deadwood. With another nga as a rookie that’s at least four young kids in plus any trades more than enough imo. Replacing older deadwood with cost controlled draftees also frees up some cap space looking forward to 2022.
Yeh.
I see Billings as a completely separate issue to Ross and Dunstan.
And the discussion needs to take that into account.

Billings is all about cost vs proven output.
Your tolerance for acceptable compensation is different to mine.
Both of us would prefer to retain his services if the compensation doesn’t jump our respective hurdles.
I think that is the nub of the issue with Jack.
The other two though, that’s really where the argument about depth and culture lies. Your emphasis on risk is different to mine.
