Autopsy Rd 23, 2021 - 44 point loss vs. Crows

Just one of those games where you could sense the moment we would fumble or turn it over.

Example: Simpkin wins a stoppage clearance, starts to think too much, pressure comes, hot handball, receiver fumbles, turnover.

I really hope the people praising Hall aren’t the same people that rip into Atley about his disposal.

Hall got a lot of it but was pathetic with it.
In defence of Hally he’s the only one out there today that handled the ball cleanly.
Everyone else fumbled. Was terrible

The less analysed about this game the better.

Going forward we need to retain just the mature players that provide leadership and stability, we have 5-10 mature players occupying list spots who panic badly and turn the ball over a lot under pressure. That isn't a good environment for a kid to learn in.

Players like Ziebell, Hall, Atley, McDonald, Dumont, etc are good when we are doing okay across the board but where is the leadership when under pressure? Are you making a kids life easier out there or harder? I think a lot of our mature players make it harder for the kids around them.

We need to address that pronto. The problem with our list is it is just undersized across the board. Phillips was drafted last year and he has 5kg+ on Simpkin, 2kg on Stephenson, 6kg on Thomas, 2kg on Taylor, 7kg on Scott, 10kg on Mahony and he is a lot shorter than all bar Mahony. How many pre-seasons have these guys done? Why are they so skinny?

I don't think Crows have anywhere near as much midfield talent as we do but they have bigger bodies through the middle and they are better drilled in terms of a more defensive, more contested brand of football. We had similar problem with them that we did with a team like Freo who also has a bigger bodied midfield.

That isn't obviously our forte going forward, but those type of teams exist and we need to make sure we can deal with those type of teams going forward.

It bares repeating that Nobes is on a rolling contract, so if they don't pitch to Clarkson then it's because we're happy with the current coach.
As much as I'd love Clarko coaching us, it ain't happening. We're not giving Nobes the flick. Would mean 4 coaches in 2 years.

when even Tarryn was not himself at times, it's gonna be a s**t day.

It was really just a very, very bad game of footy. Even Adelaide were laughable at times.

The season was over for the players already. They checked out after last weeks game and it was evident

Bring on 2022
Players don't get to check out. They are professionals and paid good money. Effort must be a non-negotiable condition of any player's employment

Would be disappointed if I heard a eulogy saying Fred Smith died because the heart surgeon had checked out during the bypass surgery because he was young and had had a hard year due to all the discos being closed.

No excuse for lack of effort

Had a 7 week stretch of being OK (3 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw).

Outside of that we were clearly the worst team in it (1 win, 14 losses) and played some football that was utter tripe. No guarantee that we'll go screaming up the ladder next year either. We have to be ultra patient otherwise we'll implode.

A good dose of reality I think.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle. We're not the best 18th team ever and we're not a basket case. Plenty to work on and lots to work with.

Great first season from Noble but don't get too comfortable.

If you're not excited about the future as a North supporter then you're a miserable campaigner.

I was thinking WWJD

Remember when we smacked Brisbane in a similar fixture about 4 years ago. Means F all in the long run but it does give Nobes some ammo in the exit interviews to put the acid on a few.

bring on 2022

These late surges by Hawthorn and Adelaide mean f all in the long run of the state of their lists. We've seen it countless times over the years with many clubs. It's become a meme at this point with how many people fall for dead rubber wins translating to a promising following-year. Yeah today sucked but if you are thinking it's gonna define this group's next 10 years or even 6 months well....you're kidding. We ourselves experienced it many times. Our ceiling is higher than theirs and will come with time

Copped a drubbing from the team who were in 17th, with a midfield seemingly disinterested in putting in the effort to defend or to create anything when the easy option wasn't on, with most of the non-KPD defenders having shockers, and with our team as a whole never really seeming to be in control of the flow of the game for any sustained period. A performance like tonight's is inexcusable if we're even half the on-the-up prospect so many have been talking us up to be off the back of little more than no longer being quite this terrible. Very few from our side can hold their heads high tonight.

For all the focus on youth, this match demonstrated how heavy our reliance on older players remains. It's entirely understandable, part of the reason people always overhype younger players is that they fail to properly cognise the different impact of playing with the specific responsibilities more experienced players tend to bear - but nonetheless, Ziebell's absence in the backline was very evident tonight (especially early), Cunnington's absence in the middle has been keenly felt every time over the last two years, Hall continues to be the main generator of play from the D50, and Goldstein having something of a down performance remains a significant dampener on our ability to create anything from the ruck (which is particularly concerning given our lack of ability to neutralise stoppages, and lack of an obvious replacement for what he produces at his best). It's no surprise that younger players take time to grow into their roles, will tire over the course of a season, and will occasionally struggle to have much of an impact at all - nevertheless, with Thomas the main exception, our younger players as a group weren't good tonight, and that shouldn't be excused either.

Ultimately, tonight we had the opportunity to set a standard, and definitely assert that we're on the right path; we failed. Instead, we reverted to our worst again, although at this point - 7-31-1 over the last two seasons - that's more a reversion to our new norm (which is why, amongst other reasons, it's so foolish to endorse reduced expectations and "a stint at the bottom", because all it allows is the slipping standards under which we play like we just did). None of that is to deny what positive signs there are for future development, but just as with Shaw's caretaker honeymoon in 2019, we need to be vigilant about why certain issues arise, and expect to see signs of them being overcome. For the current team, that means finding ways to consistently halt opposition momentum, finding ways to be in control of the play for longer (without it simply being a backline chip-kicking exercise), and working to find ways to play well without relying on the same few experienced players to carry so much of the load for us. We took a small step up in the back half of this season, from total rabble to generically poor bottom-quarter side, but performances like we put in tonight only make evident just how much more work needs to be done.

Anyone who thinks JZ shouldn’t go on has rocks in their head. Missed his leadership immensely today. No one stood up either when we had a bit of momentum or when we were down (most of the game tbh) and our defence was disorganised.

Not convinced on Atu, though he’s raw. Bonar I’m convinced is much better than he’s shown post-injury. Atley one more year. Taylor and Stevo need to be way more consistent. Goldy and Taz nearing the end. Etc etc.
Heaps and heaps to say but I’m drunk and annoyed so will leave it there. Go North. See youse next year.

As usual total lack of leadership from senior players. Goldstein weak as piss, no presence. We need to move on from Goldy, Tarrant, Dumont et al
