:)

"That (finals drought) is something that comes with our footy club, but we have also won 16 premierships," Rutten noted.

"That is part of being at the Essendon footy club and part of what our players have really embraced throughout the course of this season is really embracing our history and reconnecting there and bringing a lot of that with us.

"But this next chapter of our history hasn’t been written yet. We are on a journey, we want to achieve something really special and we are committed to doing that."

The full quote is so much better than the snippet of it in the tweet.

For me the best indication of how well we're going is the form of Cutler and Snelling. You always see these bit part players pop up and find good form in a club that is working well. You remember how good Blumfield, Moorcroft and Heffernan looked in that 2000 team, but how ordinary they looked at Richmond and Melbourne.

On top of that Smith has dropped the selfish stuff. Laverde, Stewart and Langford are all coming good. Parish has had a break out year. Kids are easing into the side. On top of the Shiel and McGrath have come back strongly after long lay-offs.

Truck has done an amazing job and the club's talent and options run deep. Lets see the club back in Dodoro to hit the next two drafts and build a team that picks players from the draft and adds value to them. Lets become a club that trades players out. Ones we got in the 3rd round being worth 2nd rounders and occasionally 1st rounders. That should keep the talent pouring in to keep us competitive for a long time.

Winning premierships are great, however, not being a rabble should be the baseline. It seems like we've finally achieved that after 15 years!!

For me the best indication of improvement is that we've focused on beating the teams we're expected to beat and those below us first, and we've done it consistently.

The Essendon of old would have dropped many of them - and buttered it up by pointing to the odd 2 or 4 teams in the 8 that we've pipped (but never going anywhere) - like the Hawks of today.

It's really interesting how this idea that this is the first year we've been beating sides outside the top 8. If you look at us from 2017 to 2020 our records against bottom 10 sides are as follows:

2017: 10 wins-5 losses
2018: 9-2
2019: 10-3
2020: 5-3-1 draw

For a cumulative 34 wins, 13 losses and a draw against bottom 10 sides. Which means our record against top 8 sides over that time is 8-29.

I know a few will quote this and say "that shows we're a middle of the road side" but for some reason our supporters seem to think we've struggled to beat sides that we should for the past few years.

For me the biggest change is our ability to stay in games against better sides. We've only been blown away a couple of times and they were against sides now in the top 4 (and the Tigers when they kicked 8 goals in as many minutes when we ran out of gas in the final term).

It's more about the margins and with ease we're beating the bottom sides.

I love this coach. I was really worried we would chew him up and spit him out from people further up the admin and $ chain meddling with his desired process.

Absoulutley no spin, supreme motivator and the players seem to want to break their backs to be involved in his vision...

What the hell is going on...? 😅

Eh, I guess. It's just an interesting take.

Beating teams below us consistently :whitecheck:
Beating them by big margins :whitecheck:
Being competitive against some of the sides above us :whitecheck:
Making finals with a run of form :whitecheck:
Doing all of this with a younger list :whitecheck:

I'd say those are pretty good indicators that separate us from the Essendon of old, and many of the sides below us, and while it comes at the cost of not beating many sides above us (whereas the Essendon of old would have bagged a couple, providing momentary relief), it parlays more into the optimistic signs for the future for long-term success.

A cog in the piece, as they'd say.

And btw that 2020 stat is terrible.

It's not so much the teams from 9-14. It's specifically the bottom 4, especially winning margin. Compare 2017 - 2019 (when we were finals contenders) to this year.

We're doing the same as previous years against sides below us. Maybe we're winning by more but our record is pretty much the same as it always was against average and poor sides. I'm not disappointed at all with what we're doing but to say "we're beating sides we should be beating more consistently" is plainly false when it's pretty much the same as our time under Woosha, which people just don't want to admit.

We lost to a side below us 3 times in 2018 (Bulldogs, Carlton and Freo), not 2.

There's a difference between winning and winning comfortably though. We've seen how much percentage helps given we were locked in to play finals before the game because of it.

Also, I don't think we can overlook losing to the wooden spooners in both 2017 and 2018 as finals contenders. In 2019 we fell over the line against Gold Coast. Even last year we only beat Adelaide by 3 points. If that isn't struggling then I don't know what is.

My apologies, I forgot the Dogs missed the top 8 in 2018. Still, 9-3 against sides outside the top 8 is hardly terrible, compared to 3-7 against top 8 sides, no?

We consistently beat teams outside the top 8 under Woosha. Fact. We consistently lost top top 8 sides under Woosha. Fact. We have done so the same this season. Fact.

Seriously, I'm not saying Truck is a bad coach and that this year hasn't exceeded my expectations, it has. I'm just trying to get people to acknowledge that we've been beating bottom 10 sides pretty consistently over the past 5 years. Can you admit that?
