AFL Under-19s Championship fixtures: WA to kick off carnival against South Australia and pick one fancy Jason Horne-Francis

He’s the most talked about draft prospect in the country, and Jason Horne-Francis coming to Perth this month.

The powerful South Adelaide midfielder, who has been dominating the SANFL senior competition this season, will form part of a star-studded South Australia under-19s side against WA on August 29.

The match, at Mineral Resources Park, will kick off the national carnival after a few false starts due to coronavirus and border restrictions.

Horne-Francis, likened to Geelong captain Joel Selwood, recently changed his surname from Horne to acknowledge the influence of his step father and former Port Adelaide and South Fremantle player Fabian Francis.

Coming off a 22-possession, three-goal performance against Central District, Horne-Francis is a leading contender to be the first name called out in the national draft alongside father-son duo Nick Daicos (son of Collingwood’s Peter) and Sam Darcy (son of Western Bulldogs’ Luke).

He’s one of several first-round draft fancies for the highly-rated Croweaters including South Adelaide teammates Matthew Roberts, Arlo Draper and Port Adelaide father-son prospect Jase Burgoyne (son of Peter).

WA will also have two games across five days in Melbourne around the AFL grand final - against Vic Metro on September 24 (venue TBC) and Vic Country at GMHBA Stadium on September 28.

The Black Swans’ clash against the Allies, originally scheduled for July 31 in Blacktown, has been cancelled altogether.

WA under-19 squad members have recently returned to their WAFL and PSA teams after three trial matches against the State 17s, East Perth and Perth.

AFL Academy guns Matt Johnson (Subiaco), Neil Erasmus (Subiaco/Hale School), Jack Williams (East Fremantle), Jacob van Rooyen (Claremont) and Rhett Bazzo (Swan Districts/Guildford Grammar) are among the biggest names in the WA squad.

The carnival will also give AFL recruiters a chance to see how in-form WAFL colts players like Jye Amiss, Kade Dittmar (East Perth), Max Chipper (Swan Districts), Brady Hough (Peel Thunder) and Taj Woewodin (East Fremantle) stack up against the country’s best young talent.

The two-day national combine will be held in Melbourne on September 29 and 30, with up to 60 players selected.

State combines will happen around the country in October, including in Perth on October 17 with the best prospects not invited to the national combine taking part in various medical and fitness tests.

The NAB AFL Futures Match is set to be held on grand final day once again, featuring the best 2022 draft prospects from around the country.

AFL Under-19s Championship fixtures

October 2/3: Vic Country v Allies

Gee that first state game should be a good one. That first game definitely impacts a few local WA colts sides chances seeking finals spots though. EF with a fair few in the state squad, if selected, will definitely be impacted. There are 4 teams in the race for 2 finals spots - EF, WP SF and Subi. The latter 3 have a couple each in line for selection, whilst EF have up to 6 from memory.

Then are there more carnival games played during the finals? Surely finals should be where ones best players are on the park playing if fit......Will impact a load of colts like like comps in WA SA and Victoria.

How will SA even be able to travel here for a game in two weeks? At present they would have to quarantine. I would be surprised if this carnival happens. Would love to see that first game though- WA V SA. What a cracker.

Colts GF here is Oct 3rd- I would think if these boys travel to Melbourne late September they won’t be playing in the GF if their team makes it. I reckon they will have to agree to quarantine upon return before being up for selection. This will affect kids in Year 12 as well. But good on the AFL for trying to get it done.

I’m assuming the U17’s is done and dusted. Good thing for them that they have next year.

Time for a dedicated thread to the 2021 championships not just each State?
Not a regular contributor here, so better to ask.

The above would be a very appropriate post to kick off the wider conversation ?

The wife let me get the West subscrition back so I watched the first three quarters of Hale V Aquinas to watch Erasmus mainly. Never too sure if the quality at this level but that kid is a beast. Decision making is top notch. I thought the Warner V Erasmus show would be more even with what I’ve read lately but it has been a complete domination. I hope the Eagles get him- would be a welcome addition to our midfield.

My wife is not that accomodating. As a West Coast fan in country Vic, I'll have to wait for the nationals on Fox/Kayo.

Did Josh Cripps play?

Subi's colts definitely missed Erasmus's presence today in that 116 pt loss to EF colts.....and a few others too. That % boost might sneak EF into the finals.....two tough games left to play for EF v EP and WP.....

Josh Cripps is finding his feet with some good performances v SD, SF and Subi post his ACL injury.....Will be very surprised if he gets drafted, but a handy addition to the EF seniors tall man brigade for 2022

Josh Cripps has been rewarded for his promising form since returning from a long-term knee injury with a late call-up to the WA under-19s squad.

The talented 199cm East Fremantle ruck-forward produced two big WAFL colts performances in the past fortnight after building steadily.

Cripps, the 19-year-old brother of Carlton co-captain Patrick, is one of nine Sharks in the State 19s squad.

He joins Finn Gorringe, Taj Woewodin, Josh Browne, Jack Williams, Corey Warner, Judd McVee, Jed Hagan and Ed Curley.

The Black Swans take on South Australia in their national under-19s carnival opener at Mineral Resources Park on August 29.

Cripps is no certainty to make the final team, already littered with key forwards including East Fremantle teammate Williams, East Perth sharpshooter Jye Amiss and Claremont pair Jacob van Rooyen and Eric Benning.

Van Rooyen played as a key defender in WA’s three recent trial games due to injuries to Jaiden Hunter (elbow) and Kellen Johnson (ankle).

Cripps returned from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, suffered in a PSA match for Aquinas College last season, in round 11 against Perth, his first match in 364 days.

He’s booted seven goals and averaged 23 disposals, 9.5 hit-outs and 5.5 marks in his last two games to be among the Sharks’ best on both occasions.

“He’s growing in confidence every week and getting through games easier, getting through games better and feeling better,” East Fremantle colts coach Adrian Ricciardello said earlier in the month.

“We were a little bit reluctant to put him around the ball when he first game back so we stuck him up forward but the last two weeks he’s been really good for us around the ball.

“Saturday (round 18 v South Fremantle) was a breakout game for him and showed that he can get back to doing what his was pre-injury so I’m super stoked for him.

“We’ve worked pretty hard with him on his goal-kicking, he lacked that confidence in front of goals when he first came back but now he’s slotting goals that he should and he’s pretty hard to stop.”

East Fremantle ball magnet Josh Browne made a successful return from a hamstring injury at the weekend, while West Perth speedster Zac Fleiner is touch and go for the Croweaters clash.

South Australia named their leadership group this week with pick one fancy Jason Horne-Francis the captain.

There's me thinking Cripps Jnr would go under the drafting radar....LOL...thanks for that Rainsparks and Jordan McArdle!

You think he’s a chance? He’s 19 playing in Colts. Probably needs the champs to go ahead to really get a gauge on him.

Probably his older brother might put a good word in for him....TBH I can't see Cripps jnr even getting a state game with the plethora of talls already in the squad......

At 199cm & coming back from 12 months out, he'll be picked up regardless of the State game/championships.

Big raps on him mate? I am not so sure. EF should have sent him to league or ressies this weekend - make or break.

Lots of talent there. Was a little surprised to see Lochlan Paton and James Tunstill on this list. But good luck to them all hope to see them all get picked up.

Interesting that Max Chipper is off the list.

Interesting that Max Chipper is off the list.

Me too mate, can see him doing a Varnisen from Subi last year, winning the club, comp F&B and Mel Whinnen medal in a SD colts flag.....yet miss out on getting drafted....only factor in Chipper's favour here, is that he will show case his talent at the carnival level.....pretty sure Varnisen didn't get that opportunity last year......if Chipper has a couple of good matches at the carnival esp v Horne et al, he will get noticed......

Chipper is getting leather poisoning with 31 possessions a game and his team is on top of the ladder with a record of 13-1.

Seems a bit strange not being invited.
