lol, much defensive. He will have finished the season by the time he turns 30 is all. I can see why you and plugger fall into bickering holes
Not really sure of your point nor was I being defensive.

whether a player turns 30 in round 1 or on Christmas. He will still be 30 in his first year of a significant deal.

we aren’t seeing his best years. We are seeing what is most likely the Start of the decline at that point.

by all means, if we hypothetically sign Parker tell yourself we signed a 28 year old. If he doesn’t perform next year, tell yourself he is a 29 year old and has few more good years left. However the media will make sure to rub our noses in how we signed another over the hill swan on significant money who will be 30 in his first year at stkilda.

For mine I’d want more of a reason to not bring in a genuine gun of the comp and club captain, who’s played in a premiership, who could help us win a flag in the next 3 years, and who wouldn’t cost us any picks (except maybe a compo pick).

Again I think we need to look to contend immediately (especially as there doesn’t seem to be a Brisbane/Geelong/Hawthorn/Richmond type dynasty team out there, for the time being) and waiting around for young guys to develop into hopefully being as good as Parker already is isn’t necessarily our best play. Especially with such a big chunk of our team in that 25-29yo age bracket next year and in the prime of their careers right now.

I also think it’s fraught with danger hoping that Crouch’s body holds up for long campaigns going forward, and both he and Jones have been found wanting against really good midfields this year, so for mine, if Parker is available and willing to sign f4 years- and passes a thorough medical- it would be a relative no-brainer.

It would give us options up the wazoo for rotating all the guys you mentioned and the others in the midfield through the middle, wings, HBF, HFF, inside 50 and on the bench.
Dunkley is a younger version of Parker who I would rather spend that type of coin on in 12 months.

Atleast he will hold currency we can reclaim if we trade him out in the event he doesn’t perform well enough. Parker would be dead weight that we can’t shift on our books.

parker's a gun but would prefer to plan for the long term window. Adding parker alongside crouch/jones/hanners etc means for guys like Byrnes, Bytel, Sonsie (here's hopin), Clark, even Gresh getting a look into the midfield becomes that much harder. Either we back our talent/recruiters in or we go the short term fix.. prefer to back ourselves in and fail than grab parker and fail.

There's no reason why we can't do both.

Bid Spook & Seb farewell, sign Parker & lose that compo (is there anyone on here who wouldn't trade Dunstan & Ross for Parker straight up?), take our top pick to the draft, trade Battle for a 2nd & a 3rd, hope Mitchito and Windy make it outside the top 20 & we've added both A grade experience plus 3 young mids to develop and take over as Parker settles in for a permanent forward role in year 4.

Bytel last game 17 possessions (not enough), 8 tackles (I think) and 2 goals. Get two more possessions a qtr and that is an above average mid.

Thought after DMAC and Dunstans were written off in their 7th season, that you would be wary on writing off Clark after 4 seasons? make or break? Don't think so.

If a starting 22 mid is brought in, up to the likes of Bytel et al to break into the team. I only wanted to him to have a go at it like Byrnes has had. If he is not good enough, so be it, but he needs to be given the opportunity and last game showed really encouraging signs.

But as you rightly point out, he needs to lift his productivity and clearances. he was bumped off the ball a few times on Sunday so needs to put on a bit of bulk as well.

Dunny played his 6th season before being written off. Dmac is in his 6th this year. Was probably written off after 3 years but got games through injury and was a whipping boy when he did. He's never played more than 15 games in a season still.

Because doing what you have said is effectively going to cost us

Ross Dunstan and Battle for Parker and 2 NGA kids that we will get without moving on Battle to accomodate.

signing Parker also takes out right out of the equation of next years free agents and there is a few at the pies I’d be keen on. Wouldn’t mind Miller at the Suns either.

I agree that we definitely need to look for some more outside class/speed/skill/run, but hopefully that’s what we could get with our first pick in the draft.

I’m not sure there are too many who fit that bill floating around on the market from other clubs, and I’m sure we all remember how much we had to pay and give up for Hill, and he’s not even that good, so the draft is probably our best bet there, and as I said just before, getting Parker wouldn’t affect who we could draft, in any way.

It also looks very likely that Billings is staying, which I’m happy enough with.

But while we have plenty who can go inside, we’ve been monstered there too many times this year to think that we couldn’t do with Parker in a big way.

Especially as his addition could free up Steele and Gresh to play forward a lot more, which I think Ratts wants.

I’m also not sure we can really rely too much on Crouch long term, while Jones also has his body issues and so does Gresh.

To me, getting Parker this year, a gun with our first in the draft, our NGA guys, a guy like Talia for FB, and then Bing next year would be an awesome overall outcome and could put us in genuine contention from next season onwards.
Not having a go at you here but you mentioned something that annoys me about coaches and commentators.
Steele is a gun and clearly our best player as a midfielder. Everyone wants a dusty/danger clone who can dominate in the midfield then rest forward and turn games there too. Steele is not that person (nor are many others in the entire league).
Play Steele where he belongs (midfield) and find forwards who can be damaging when the ball is down there.

I think the club has sold itself down a certain path by suggesting that we are contending next year. We really can't afford to step backwards. We are losing a lot of experience already and maybe three of our most experienced regular players.

Agree with these theories like Sinclare has found his spot down back so play him there supporters always trying to move players once they dominate their area.

IIRC
Ross $650k +/-
Dunny $450k +/-

Call it a million for both.
I’d sign him assuming we keep billings and I’d also try to move up for Callaghan.

Parker is a great player with a better draw and a decent run with injuries I’ll go out on a limb and say we’re top 8 maybe top 4. I don’t know how many years Parker has left at this level of production but two then into the forward line would do me. I think he’d be a difference maker at the saints so it’s worth rolling the dice Imo.

We need to be playing finals not hanging around the bottom half, thanks seb, thanks Luke.

Callaghan is apparently going in the top 5. That’s a massive jump from where we are now and assets to burn to draft him.
