The concern for me with Burgo was the 3rd year. He was talking there are no limits. There are limits. That may have just been propaganda you but it out there and laugh that people buy it.

Burgo would be the 1st guy I'd look at there's not going to be a better resume. That said standards are now such throughout the industry that petty sure is no shortage of quality people out there to choose from.

I don’t get the Burgess hate. He’s a Port man at heart and has enormous experience in the AFL. He’s taken Melbourne from a team who refused to do certain pre season fitness drills to probably the fittest in the AFL. He took us as a bunch of kids to the fittest team in the AFL by a mile- those 4th quarter surges were amazing. He may have overdone it with us but everyone makes mistakes and he seems to have learned.

And blaming him for accepting a job at Arsenal or Liverpool is silly. That is the holy grail of fitness jobs. Port has always encouraged our people to take on bigger and better things. No one criticized Paul Vandenberg, no one would criticize CD if he took a plumb AFL gig- hell, no one at the club criticized Polec for taking a huge offer -and he went to a rival club.

So can the Burgess hate. Just appoint the best person for the job- if it’s Burgess, appoint him. If it’s someone else, appoint them. But don’t let petty, historic gripes sway the decision.

And may I repeat- he is a Port man. He grew up barracking for Port. He is world class at what he does and barracks for our little suburban club. I must have jumped into an alternate universe because in the one I came from we would embrace such people with open arms.
I think it's you in the alternate universe it's such a small time wrong perception, we are a professional football club with sizable membership in the biggest league in the country not a little suburban club used as a stepping stone for bigger things.
Whatever you think about Burgo's expertise aside the guy can't sit still for 5 minutes and rarely sees a contract out anywhere.

I mean, in the context of Liverpool and Arsenal, we very much are a little suburban club.

Regardless, I think with his changed family circumstances his days of taking jobs abroad are probably over.

I don’t have a problem with Burgess coming back.
He didn’t really leave us in the lurch as we had Keown.

He spent a lot of years at Port and has now spent many years in other places honing his craft.

If he had stayed at Port he may well have stagnated and we’d be calling for his head anyway.

That's why we interview everybody interested in the job, no free passes and benchmark them against Mackers - be it Burgo, Andrew Russell, Stu Graham - or whoever else is interested in the job. Maybe get the Prof on the interviewing panel.

9 news reported last night the crows have been told the name of their new high performance manager so you would think that's Burgess confirmed.

I wouldn't mind us promoting from within and adding a new face in support. Our fitness program will just roll on, tweaked as necessary.

And the local rag reported that it seems that their darlings would beat us in the race to get Burgess.

What hecken race?

Yep. We didn't miss a beat when we lost Burgess. Just keep adding the best young talent underneath and promoting the 2IC.

It keeps our costs down and keeps our ideas up to date.

Wouldn't mind getting someone in from Brisbane in some capacity. They seem to be able to keep notoriously unreliable players on the park (McCarthy, Daniher, Cockatoo), and their balance of physical size and running endurance is as good as anyone's.

Lol cRowie must be confident Burgess is going to the crows. Already getting his We Won the Race headline ready :tearsofjoy:

Didn't they already have that race "won", before Ian McK was even leaving...?

🤷‍♂️

After Balme, nothing is guaranteed :tearsofjoy:

But yeah, they have pretty much set up the unmissable punchline.

Rucci saying Burgo to crows wont be announced before Melbourne's season finishes.

A huge part of it was mental, I had a decent chat with HinKley around that time about what he thought Burgess brought and he said as much, as long as they believed they were fitter and could run out the games better…they did.

Problem with that is that once the emperors new clothes are noticed there’s a slide.
