Analysis Random NORTH thoughts not worthy of a thread

Whenever I see Boomer out there, as a runner, giving words of wisdom to our players I get flooded with good vibes. I can't contain the grin, it's inevitable.

P.S. Atu got reemed by the umps today. Karn North.

My partner is going to kill me if I shout "There he is! There's Boomer!" one more time when he pops on the tele

Did this for another thread on the main board.

Top 10 players in 2021 by % of 2021 points scored in the final quarter. I've limited it to player that have kicked at least 10 goals in 2021.

Essendon's Alec Waterman has kicked almost half of his 66 points in the final quarter in 2021.

NAMEScored in 4th Quarter (2021)Total Score (2021)% Scored in 4th Quarter (2021)
Alec Waterman316647.0%
Isaac Smith367746.8%
Shane McAdam6113146.6%
Will Snelling317044.3%
Hugh McCluggage378543.5%
Cameron Zurhaar7216643.4%
Will Hoskin-Elliott327443.2%
Dylan Moore6316039.4%
Shai Bolton4611839.0%
Tarryn Thomas5714838.5%

It seems that Zurhaar and Thomas are both last quarter specialists, scoring 43.4% and 38.5% of their 2021 points in the final quarter, respectively. Plenty of games will be determined off of the boots of these two, it seems.

The player in question was rookie listed by North in 2012 and delisted in 2014 without playing a senior game. He played with the Kangaroos’ VFL-affiliated club.

Tim McGenniss would be it?

Oof, okay. This is opening a big ol' can of worms and I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I've been thinking about it a bit over the last couple of days and come to the conclusion that I'm profoundly uncomfortable with the outcome of the Tim McGenniss situation.

Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions, the decision we made to disassociate with him was absolutely the right one. But where my discomfort comes is that we rightfully cut ties with someone who was a low profile and never played a game who did something abhorrent, yet we don't apply that same standard (at least to my knowledge) to people who happened to be champions of the club and did something equally as abhorrent, if not more so. IN fact, we actively celebrate them.

It speaks to a wider problem in celebrating sporting culture imo, that as long as you're a former champion of a sport and moved for those exploits, it doesn't matter what you do off the field. It's a massive double standard tbh and I hate that we're associated with that.

I have a profound personal family experience with domestic violence and exploring the effect that it's had on my character and worldview is something that I've genuinely struggled with as I've progressed through my adult life and come to understand my experience better. I mean, I don't want to get into that too much for obvious reasons, but I thought it was important to add that context and explain maybe why it's a bit more personal for me.

I think it's more a matter of when it was done.

If you're referring to Carey, he did the offending (for the most part) 20 years ago. People didn't hold the same views then that they did today, which is why you can't expect the same reaction.

Clarko king-hit a bloke on camera and Gary Ablett killed a girl, and both are celebrated today. If they'd done those actions today rather than before 2000, we'd be telling a very different story about them.

So... my wife is is Portuguese and lived the first 20+ years of her life there. The fifteen years we've been together we've lived in 5 countries, including just 18 months in Australia. But she is Converted: absolutely hooked on AFL and North. "It killed soccer for me" she proudly declares. The week's planning is based around when all the games are, plus On the Couch on Monday and the Front Bar on Thursday. She insisted we watch the replays of the Carlton and West Coast games twice.

But the ultimate confirmation came yesterday, when she offered our young boys the chance to watch a nineties cartoon with yellow people in it. Straight faced, with no perception of the error she asked them: "Do you want to go watch the Simpkins?".

Nit-picking, l know, but Ger-hard drivelling into his microphone this a.m. on the wireless with McCrae. He was crapping on about Matthews and his legacy with senior coaches.
Now, by Hoj's humble reckoning only one of his " protege's " C.Scott lucked a flag with a star studded side in his first year.
. Voss - failed
. Leppitsch - failed
. B. Scott - failed

Pagan on the other hand has coached players who have gone on to multiple flags.
. Clarkson ( N.M.)
. Hardwicke ( N.M. & * )
. Longmire ( N.M )
. Simpson ( N.M. )
. Thompson ( * )

That's 12 flags by my calculations.

So token quota filling appointment Laura Kane has been poached by the AFL.

Yet another "VFL side canned for the W team" moment lolololololol

You know as well as I do that beyond names on a page people would struggle to be able to say what any given person actually does at the footy club.

Laura Kane was obviously good at her role given that she was consistently promoted and then now appears to have been head hunted.

Any argument around gender targets was complete nonsense.

I wonder if Jmac will get a promotion then. I can't remember the entire structure but I'm pretty sure he was working directly under her. IIRC he does have a business management degree and is a pretty switched on fellow. I swear I remember someone saying we should be grooming him for an administrative role in his future post football, so it's kinda funny it's worked out this way thus far.

Gender quotas again?
