Recommitted Mason Cox [re-signed with Collingwood for 2022]

Cox is another victim of the "overpaid = not AFL standard" thought process, when really it's "overpaid = C grader at best but still AFL capable".

So many players get called VFL level just because they don't perform to their salary standard.

blueiris saying a rookie brings more is a fine example.

Tom Fullarton has got 11 games for a top 4 side this year, he has kicked 2 goals total while averaging 10 disposals and 3 hitouts a game.

Obviously you don't want to pay Cox 500k to just trump that, but you'd quite happily pay him 150-200k (50-100k more than a rookie) to do his career average which is same disposals, 3 more hitouts and a whole goal a game extra (0.2 to 1.2). Cox's career game highs of hitouts (43) and goals (5) are not beyond him repeating it, and Fullarton is miles off it.

Now, there's obviously other issues, in that you wouldn't want Fullarton, an exciting project player, to leave for opportunity over the next 2 years while Cox is there playing a role, and whether Cox would take 150k and so on.

But the fact is very few rookies could actually contribute what Cox can bring, and they certainly aren't going to step up big in finals on 2 separate occasions.
He hasn’t been consistent though 2 games in finals over Fullarton who is cheaper and younger is who I’d prefer the Lions consist with

Cox had a good run at it and should be proud of what he's achieved considering his non-footy background, but the end is nigh.

Obviously Pies are simply just shopping around hoping some club considers him of value before he is delisted.

No different than putting your old working CRT TV on the side of the road for $10, hoping someone will buy it, before
you eventually have to take it to the tip yourself...

We are probably just glad to get his 500k a year contract off the books lol, even if he goes for nothing that's a good outcome.

If we can get some picks that other clubs don't expect to use and convert it into points that's even better.

If we can land Lapinski for Cox that would be the dream scenario.

He'd be handy depth for anyone that wants him.

I've always thought he'd be better served playing a 50-50 type of role ruck/forward rather than just forward.

I'd he happy to have him sitting in the VFL for when Ryder and or Marshall go down.

Whether he's happy to go on as a depth player is the other question.
Linked to Saints.

An article in a newspaper stating Saints are interested in Cox is a link. It may not be true but it’s the definition of a link.

It would be a surprise if St Kilda were interested in Cox. Ryder and Marshall are a very good ruck combo. Perhaps for depth as Marshall has had a lot of injuries lately.

Clubs could do a lot worse than having cox as 150k ruckman insurance.

He is a good tap ruckman. I would have him in front of Lewis Young 100x over..

What’s he like with ruck stoppages? Never really seen it or can remember how he goes in the ruck.
He’s not going to lose centre bounces. Whether it results in a direct clearance is a different topic.

But at the very least he will break even far more frequently than Martin/English/young.

Should be fine at centre bounces but could be a liability at boundary throw ins.
Hes a good ruckman. Even at the boundary throw ins. Its just that it has been rare for him to be given the opportunity. I think his career would have been a lot better if he was used as a ruckman. He should have never picked Collingwood.
