What was all the talk about midseason draft? If he was still on the Crows list, surely he wouldn't have been eligible?

Edit: I doubt he'll have to sit out. I suspect he's got another club lined up. If he had to sit out, a trade would have been orgqnised - surely.

Not sure - they did officially part ways back in March this year at his request, so maybe that is why he is listed as "retired"?

Was Mal Michael retired retired (no contract) or Frawley last year before going on to Dons/Saints respectively ?

Yes they were not on the books. Stengle still was on the books at the Crows with whatever payout his settlement entailed.

It appears to be a bit of a messy situation due to him being contracted until 2022. Not sure how the settlement or any payout for the final year of his contract affects his ability to be picked up by another club in the shorter term - maybe it might be a similar situation to Cam McCarthy where Stengle has to take the year off at AFL level again next year?

Well he is now off the Crows list, officially. If they kept him on their list, then he couldn't go to another club obviously, but with him now removed, surely he could continue his AFL career elsewhere...

That's a tad harsh - I'm pretty sure I read that they've been trying for a baby for a long time without any success and, as someone who has been down that path, I empathise that a couple in that situation will do whatever they can whenever they can to try to make it happen.

Football in the end is just a job - the timing isn't ideal for Brisbane or Neale but it is what it is.
Ok, that just reinforces my view on this. If it was an accidental pregnancy the maybe I could understand the want to go home, but they’ve clearly made the move to Qld with the intention of getting pregnant, so using it as an excuse to break his contract is bullshit.

Considering he played for the Eagles this year and not the Crows reserves say's his contract expired when he was let go

I understand circumstances can change, but tend to agree with you that this should have been a consideration when Neale and his partner decide made their original decision to move.
Did I read correctly that Neale's contract with Brisbane was frontloaded? I have a bit issue with players requesting a trade once the frontloaded portion of their contract is over.

To break the contract Brisbane have to be compensated so the excuse doesn’t really matter.

I'm sure during the lead up to MSD that part of the deal it was mentioned that as part of the deal for him to leave the Crows he would be a DFA at the end of this season. I could be wrong though.

A contract is just that. If it was done to us we would be livid.
Enormous amounts of change over the last two years, with living away from family having taken on a totally different dimension. Good luck to Neale and his family and I hope he gets to live where he wants to.

Why should anyone care? Brisbane can negotiate for a fair deal or hold Neale to his contract.
Claiming he needs to return for ‘family reasons’ automatically puts Brisbane in an awkward and potentially weaker position in trade negotiations due to PR and player welfare implications. Hopefully they stand firm and tell Neale they won’t trade him unless Freo comes up with an extremely good deal, particularly given his current contract is front loaded and he’s cashed in on the bulk part of it already.

Local travel should be back to a relatively normal state next year once vaccination rates get high enough. It’s not a good enough excuse imo.

If someone moved on after 3 years, would you bat an eyelid in any other profession?
Sports is entirely different though. I wouldn't expect to get tackled in an office or building site.

I just think its a bit odd to leave 1 place for a 5 yr contract and then 3 years in say oh actually would rather go back. A poster said contract was front ended too, so you'd be even filthier if you were Brisbane.

Yeah if he was 25 he'd be worth that, but he's too old to be worth two top 10 picks. Pick 6 (or whatever Freo have) should get it done. Maybe some steak knives thrown in.
Cameron was 27 or 28(?) and Geelong paid up 3 firsts. Freo haven't made finals since 2015, so with him in their chances improve markedly and offset Cerra. I think 2 top 10s or even a second. Otherwise Bris can just say no deal.

I can understand both sides of the argument, but at the end of the day, he signed a 5 year deal, and he and his wife would have gone in to that knowing they would be away from family for that period. They chose to start a family during that time, so it’s a bit rich to play the go home for family card under those circumstances. They could easily have waited a few more years to start a family if they didn’t want to do it in qld.
You have assumed it was a choice.

He may have very well intended to see out his contract but for whatever reason thinks have changed.

He is able to request a trade, Lions can hold him to his contract. I have no problem with both actions.

It’s been established in this thread already that they had been trying and we’re having trouble getting pregnant, I’m assuming nothing.

I agree. Should be forced to pay the excess back. Clubs would be silly not to include it in their player contracts.

That is a bit of a stretch mate to paint that as a negative thing - a couple in their mid 20s who are relatively comfortable financially (even before the move to Brisbane) planning to have a baby in their late 20s after getting married is hardly unusual. Perhaps you (and others) may rate a job contract (remember footy is just a job) higher than starting a family, but at the same time neither you nor I know anything about their circumstances, motivations, or whether their were reasons why it had to be now.

We also have no insight into their family unit, or how Lachie's wife would cope being inside the football bubble for another year with a baby in tow, so you just have to take it at face value that she feels the need to be around family as a first time mother and Lachie is supporting her in that. Whether it happens or whether Lachie has to see out another year or two up in Brisbane will play out as it will, but that doesn't require holier-than-thou types getting up on their soap box and judging the Neales from a completely external, uninformed perspective.

TL;DR - Cut them a bit of slack, footy is just a job and family is far more important.

If they get Carlton's 1st for Cerra, then they'll have 2 firsts to offer. Although, I still think that's steep for a 28 year old who has had a few injury interruptions this year.

Well said. I doubt it's uncommon for a women to fall pregnant and realise they really want their family around them.
