As Bill would say, that's compllletely lllacking in lllogic - when they're out of contract they can walk so there's no other time to trade them! Front-loading/back-loading is usually done to fit the club's cap, not player demands (no doubt there'll be an exception somewhere).I'd personally like the see the banning of trading players while in contract, it's farcial that players can do the above, if that means there are shorter term contracts signed then so be it.
IMO we use 7 or a hobbs/Ward type if they are there & can go different picks after that. Clarke mentioned last week 7 is most likely still the best available kid. IMO 7 could get us our best young mid.The draft is often defined on whether clubs draft best available player (from their lists) or whether they go with need. For example Freo might rank someone like Amiss much higher and even take him with their first pick 8 or so because of their perceived need. Other clubs might rank him around 15.
I reckon your list is about right as a starting point and then changes due to the draft strategy of each club.
Originally I thought we needed inside mids based on getting smacked around the ball this year but as RT showed a few pages back we actually have a heap of young inside mids ready to go, RCD, Ross, Martyn as well as starters Cotch, Edwards, Prestia and Dusty when he's in there, so any inside mid we draft is going to be in the queue behind those kids already with 2-3y in our system AND our ageing stars who still command time inside. For me that almost rules out Hobbs and Ward. Not as good players, but as possible selections.
So my thinking has changed. We're now in the luxurious position, having won big for the last few years to take a punt on some kids with really high potential. Amiss and Wanganeen Milera and to a lesser extent Rachele, the ones with very high ceilings if they come off. A bit like selecting Shai a few years back which was seen as super speculative and Sydney Stack. Both of those choices look to have paid off and will perhaps pay off big time in the future.
Dimma has said he likes the first rounders to be ready to go...but they bent that rule with RCD. It's going to be very interesting.
No way! Norf & Hawf both did that (traded away experienced players) & it's flattened them both & will take both yrs to recover. If some one offered a top 3 pick ( Nick Daicos, Darcy, Horne) type for him i would take. This is professional sport not a youth group and if we can build another core from trading out old triple premiership players then we should.
For mine Dusty is untouchable. As Bill would say, that's compllletely lllacking in lllogic - when they're out of contract they can walk so there's no other time to trade them! This is a business, players know just as well as the clubs that contracts assign them a value which is then tradeable. And every club is always looking to wheel & deal to improve their list. EVERY player has a value, if another club is willing to pay over the odds there is not a single player I'd not be willing to trade. (NB the 'value' of some players is further above market rate than others). Length of contract, value of deal and spread of payment are just part of the game.
It's not like US sports where players don't get a say in it, the player still has to agree to the deal.

More likely to be gone in the top 20. This kid appears to have more upside than nearly all prospects.Initially i was in favor of trading our 2 x 3rd rounders plus a 2nd rounder to move up to grab the doggies pick but am now thinking its better to keep and use all 6 picks in the draft as they stand.
*Very good chance our 2 x 3rd rounders will move up a few spots
* there are so many kids in victoria that have had little exposure and there will be some gems between 20-40 that the player we rate at #16 could possibly be available at #30
* Just some kids that were being touted as top 30 players we could get at 3rd round selections
Jai Serong - Mitch Knevitt - Ned long -
This year a player selected at pick #44 could be a better player selected at #16 so maybe just hold onto our existing picks and see who slips through
I thought that was Ned Long?Keep the Roberts one a bit quiet. Kid is a gun and we are looking at him very very closely. This is perhaps the kid T71 was suggesting we hoped would slide a bit.
Roberts certainly isn't an athletic beast so I wouldn't be surprised if he drops down the rankings a bit.Keep the Roberts one a bit quiet. Kid is a gun and we are looking at him very very closely. This is perhaps the kid T71 was suggesting we hoped would slide a bit.

It might have been him. I would think both are in our calculations which is terrific.I thought that was Ned Long?
True not many secrets or places to hide them these days unlike the old Dean Kemp story. If I found out from an opposition recruiter, there is no keeping it quiet. They know.
A couple of names I have heard that an opposition recruiting team believe we have strong interest in are Matthew Roberts and Dan Butlers brother, Sam Butler.
Hope so he can bloody play the game very well !Roberts certainly isn't an athletic beast so I wouldn't be surprised if he drops down the rankings a bit.
Double banger today for the lads!

I'm interested to see how Freo goes with their list spots. The Cerra and Neale deals won't impact their numbers, but I think they have delisted 8 players, 4 of them off their rookie list which leaves 4 spots to fill, they only have 2 picks in the ND and may trade out a couple of future picks into this year, although that could be complicated with finding enough capital for Neale.
Makes me think that they might be open to trading their pick 6 or 8 back for a few more picks. Our picks 28 + 40 + 44 (after bids) are worth pick 8 from a points value perspective. Would give us 7 + 8 + 16 + 26. We could also keep 28 and trade next years 2nd instead.
Just a thought...........
). If Freo can keep 6 & 8 they are taking Erasmas & Amiss they aren’t going to risk missing those guys to trade either pick back.
How many points a pick is worth means nothing to clubs without a player to match. It’s why the Dogs are the only club that may trade back their 1st for points (Pies don’t have picks to trade back).
Would you trade back 7 for 28 + 40 + 44?

First club off the ranks!

A mid that is clean, has good endurance, good work rate, wins contested ball and good on the outside, versatile, good skills by hand and foot, strong overhead, strong tackler and kicks goals...... Sounds like he should be the #1 pickknightmare has him ranked at 6 - the kid is no secret that is for sure.
6. Matthew Roberts
Best position: Inside midfield
Height, weight: 183cm, 81kg
Recruited from: South Adelaide
Projected draft range: 5-25
Plays like: Dayne Beams
August ranking: 4
Rationale: Roberts has been one of this year's most consistent performers and is one of the premier ball winners with the bonus being he can also push forward and have an impact. After missing time with an ankle injury, Roberts made a strong return from injury with 20 disposals in his first SANFL League match back, though his match against Western Australia other than a strong second quarter was below expectation which contributes to his drop down two spots.
Strengths:
One-touch ball winner below the knees
Endurance
Work rate
Spread from the contest
Contested ball winning
Clean hands in traffic
Distribution by hand
Damaging and penetrating left foot kick
Placement of kicks out in front of forwards to lead onto
Overhead marking
Inside/outside midfield balance
Versatility to play midfield, forward or back as required
Scoreboard impact
Strong tackler
AFL ready-to-go game
Weaknesses:
Prone to rushing under pressure and bombing long by foot for territory
Needs to take more time after a mark or free kick to assess his options before moving the ball on
Would benefit from lowering his eyes and looking to hit up shorter targets more often
Limited speed
Limited time and space in traffic
