What an insult to Australia's democracy and an insult to human rights.

From Crikey,
Meet our new human rights commissioner with the perfect credentials (Lib, IPA, 18c)
Lorraine Finlay has in the past asserted a number of positions that may place her at odds with the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Yesterday the federal government quietly appointed Lorraine Finlay as the next human rights commissioner. She is a Murdoch University legal academic and human trafficking specialist with the Australian mission to ASEAN.
Media releases from Attorney-General Michaelia Cash and the Australian Human Rights Commission both praised Finlay’s academic expertise and work in international human rights law. But they neglected to mention hers deep ties to the Liberal Party, as a former upper house candidate in Western Australia and president of the state’s Liberal women’s council. They also overlooked her years spent vocally taking positions that might put her at odds with the AHRC.

Convention states that someone is selected from a field of candidates, Finlay got directly appointed.

What has happened previously, assuming what should rule her out is convention not her body of work, say slavery. The media is very light on her involvement in the area.
That Finlays membership of the Liberal Party attracts the rebuttal we are seeing.

She was dirty Dyson Hayden's Associate too! so IPA, failed Liberal pre selection, WA, reactionary - she's got all the attributes. This was a position once filled by Ronald Wilson and Gillian Triggs

Triggs was out of her depth, classic Peters principle example.

Ok, have you ever read one of Tim Wilson's decisions - its like a first year law student.

Triggs was/is an internationally regarded legal academic. There was no preferment in her appointment. She was Dean of USydney Law School and Professor of International Law there for twenty years before she took on the appointment. Ronald Wilson was a High Court judge - I have learnt there is no point arguing with you. BTW have you ever read a determination of the Australian Human Rights Commission? But hey she criticised a Liberal Government so qualifications don't matter right

Academia. Triggs should have stayed with an area in which she excelled.
Ron Wilson indeed. I did not include his name because he wasnt in the conversation, as well you know. It didnt stop you making up an opinion & blaming me for it. Bloody hopeless, gross misrepresentation.

What specifically is it about Triggs that upsets you?

timing of foot in mouth ....

What?
What is it that she has done that upsets you?
What made her unsuitable for the job that she held as HRC?

I would guess that you are just parroting, for the hundredth time, LNP garbage.
Triggs' only crime was to go against the LNP.

The difference between her and Triggs is that Triggs truly had academic expertise with an established international reputation, but Finlay is very low on the academic totem pole.

She supports her party's position of locking up refugees for years on end.
Not fit for the role in any way. She's just another Murdoch puppet .
This is consistent with the overwhelming support for closed borders amongst Australians unfortunately.

Not that it's appropriate for someone who's supposed to represent human rights concerns.

I wouldn't say overwhelming.
Besides that , the position is not meant to be a partisan political appointee and has an important function protecting human rights and also Australia's reputation.
This smacks of Trump style politics where they lob in a yes man.

I did edit my above post to point out that supporting closed borders like the current crop of political leaders do and representing human rights to all isn't a good mix.

Refugees and anyone needing to come or return here getting refused is something she should be concerned with in a way that respects those people.

Well the Human Rights Commissioner has a clear job to represent human rights as per legislation and our signed commitment to uphold the human rights charter.
Locking up refugee families for years clearly breaches those rights.
She can't just ignore those things and do what she is told or her position is untenable.

Shes from Michaela's faction & quite the canny politician.

Patronage is a wonderful thing when you are the beneficiary.

Kwality Fyi Finlay is a university lecturer as well
Should Finlay stay in Academia, given your dislike for Triggs background?

Exactly how might you operate permanent residency in a non closed borders/no covid world ?

Triggs excelled in a academia.

Be honest, that is what you want my comment to be, & guess what, if thats what I thought, I would have said that.
Compre?
Im actually just trying to clarify your views so far ive got:

1. Triggs sucks, too much academic experience
2. Finlay is an academic, insert word salad response which doesnt convey anything of your views on Finlays expeirence.

So what do you think of Finlays experience and what can she bring to the role?

You know what her area of expertise is? : the application of domestic law in the implementation of international treaties - of course this is not something that is required of a Human Rights Commissioner.

Like many academics she was notionally at the bar while she was Dean of the Law School.

Paul Finn was highly regarded academic in Equity. Directly appointed on the Federal Court, He is one of the most well regarded Federal Court judges - he never practised (although he was notionally at the bar for opinion work). So by your logic he must be a s**t judge?

Also given you are unfamiliar with the proceedings of the AHRC and have not read any decisions (except for what the Murdoch press wrote when it embarked on its jihad against Triggs) on what basis do you say she was a bad appointment

Keep making it up and change tac every post as usual
