Both Ross and Billings are solid soldiers and with Billings he is probably a bit above that. We don't have a great amount of depth so losing three senior solid players was going to put us back a couple of years from playing finals again potentially as we waited for kids to develop. There is nothing wrong with them being in our best 10-20 players long term.....as long as they are paid in that bracket, not in our best 5. Both are adaptable players. Getting rid of players because you're disappointed that they aren't champions sounds like toddlers sh*t. If that was the criteria we'd only have one player.

I think I wrote the other day that a lot of Saints hights from the past 5 years have been popping up on my youtube feed.

I was amazed and surprised how much Billings figured from year to year, especially in vital moments.

Remember the Carlisle/Murphy match? That game Billings kicked 5 and got over 30 possessions and I could hardly remember him. He is so vanilla in his playing style.

He wont be Bont, but that is not his fault. It wasn't the best choice but considering they chose McCartin over Petracca it looks like genius in retrospect

Top 10 in his Draft
Tom Boyd
Josh Kelly
Jack Billings
Marcus Bontempelli
Kade Kolodjashnij
Matthew Scharenberg
James Aish
Luke McDonald
Christian Salem
Nathan Freeman

So we couldn't get Kelly and the only one arguably better than him in the top 10 is Bont.

The draft had Cripps, and Merrett at 13 and 26 so arguably from the first round only Crips and Bont have worked out better.

Still prefer either (although Carlton have run Cripps into the ground) but the Billings pick isn't as bad as people make out. Certainly not a bust by any means and fully fit makes the team better.

I like the look of him but he's a mid-size like Battle and we can't find a spot for him, not sure why it would be different for Dawson
Dawson is everything we want Battle to be (albeit a more back half of the ground type player). Tall, moves well, beautiful kick, can take a mark and is versatile. Importantly, he can consistently find the footy. Gets it over 20 times a week. I'd love to have him but I can't see it happening.

So a poor mans Sharman?

Salem is a better footballer than Billings.

Damn this club has form retaining players that hold on to the AFL lifeline like cling wrap. So i guess this means Geary, Ross and Billings are auto inclusions next year if fit while form won't factor into them being picked. Never going to win a flag this way.

Melbourne had the good sense to get Jones his 300 then boot him out the team into a sub role, probably as respect for his long service. Can't find a single other player for them being given games for being a good bloke.

I want to see what happens when the dust settles after trade period and the draft.

But i'm hoping next year we back in the young talent we've got.

It'll pay off in the long run and give us a better shot at a flag.

eg. Bytel got pushed off the ball a few times by Mundy against freo. Instead of dropping him the next week, point it out to him and challenge him, then throw him back at it the following week.

When it comes to selection, I hope Ratten isn't driven by ladder position to ensure he gets another contract.

Clark, Coffield, Ming, Byrnes, Bytel, Highmore etc ... that's our future.

If i see the likes of Geary and Ross in the side in round 1 under the banner of "selection integrity" i'll lose my ever-lovin' mind.

Crazy to think how crap our list has been. No one jumping to take Ross, Billings or Dunstan off our hands. Thank goodness we've gone hard at the trade table bringing in solid players. Far out 2013-2019 were some lean years. Remember how we somehow managed to finish 9th and 11th in '16 and '17 and thought we were ready to push into finals?

I am now confident we are on track to be a long-term well-managed club. Whatever we do at this year's trade period, the club has my confidence.

Salem has finally become a gun too but Jack definitely turned out okay compared to the three injury busts. Kade was a huge talent but his concussions ruined it for him, Schazza was the same and we all know about Freeman. Aish and Boyd were just not that good. McDonald has been a GOP or slightly above too but was FS.

Keeping Billings on a lesser wage with bonuses is ideal list management to me. Keeps him motivated and we lock away a good player who while he won't reach the highs of those champions he's a guy that will play to a high standard every week even if that high standard is a bit beige.

Dawson is a much more adaptable player, he's tall but he can play just about any position. Probably best as a distributing back or wingman though. He's a potential future star. Battle is more a KP with running ability ideally played as a third tall at either end.

Had a better year, sure... No way a better player imo, plays the easiest position on the ground vs a bloke who can have 25 every week playing half forward.

Salem would be close to elite now. His ability to distribute the ball out of defence is incredible. He goes down and they are a much worse side. I'd have him as their most important player.

Not strong enough which is why he plays outside and loose.

Years ago I saw him at training playing against the mids and he looked like Dal, he was evasive and won his own ball over and over. I thought that was what they must have had planned for him but it never went anywhere.

Gawn is their most important player. He’s like Paddy/Rowan to us. He goes down and they instantly cannot win the grand final. Their mids have probably grown lazy like ours being spoilt with good tap work, they likely don’t know how to actually win the ball on their own merit.

All thre are best 22 if good enough and great depth if not.
I have no probs keeping.

I want finals. I think if Ratts doesn't make finals he's ****ed. We'd be on the phone to Clarko if we are looking like missing finals again.

Their mids can win their own ball so while not ideal they could probably still do it. Salem is their rebound.

How close are Clarko and Ratts?
I doubt Clarko would Backdoor him and probably would not respect us for suggesting it.
I think we’re ****ed when it comes to Clarko.

People think he's like some reincarnation of Fiora or something.
Jack is nowhere near as soft as people suggest.

Surely he did a pretty good contribution to the team getting across the line against west coast ( round 4 ) when he got 13 contested possessions.

Not sure if his role has changed, he won more contested ball and clearances in 2019, and tackled more as well.
