It does look like we've finally matured a bit on list management. Previously we've been so scared of losing guys we've seemingly caved in to demands that cost us in the end, be it too much cash and/or too many years.

First with Matt Crouch and now Jake Kelly we've set clear, reasonable limits on what we will offer. If they don't take it then they're free to test the market and get a bigger deal if they can get it. It's important they don't sacrifice long term flexibility for what were in the past short term gains.

This is more-so hypothetical, but if we don't trade in anyone like Dawson or Stephens, and considering the amount of experience we've lost (even more-so if Walker doesn't go around again)... is it possible we might go after Hurn on a Hodge/Birchall-like deal?

West Coast seem more and more like they'll be going into rebuild mode soon, with their midfield aging and JJK on his last legs. Hurn would absolutely have a spot in our 22 IMO
Nice idea but given that we're cutting our senior players, it would be hard to see how we could justify trading in a senior player. Hurn might have fresh eyes but I don't feel this is enough.

Well said. Totally agree 👍.

Dawson is another case of our recruiting not identifying local players. He was pick 56 in 2015. Same year we gave up 2nd round picks to get Hampton and Menzel and lost Dangerfield.
Dawson has been a bit of a slow burn until this year

He has been in the system for 5-6 years now and is only starting to put his game together this year

With this in mind he wasn't a stand out talent as a junior footballer

If Dawson walked through the doors of the AFC, he would immediately be our best player. If you'd watched Swans games this year you'll have seen this guy is a gun and still on the up.

Ranked 31 in the current AFL rankings, with a bullet.

I doubt he'd choose us over finals at Power but if we're in the hunt at all the club must not stuff this up quibling over draft picks. If you'd picked him at pick 6 four years ago and he'd developed into the player he is now you'd be very pleased.

Port will be into Dawson BIG time

Not sure I agree

Laird 2 x BnF and AA

Dawson good this year however still only averaged 22 possessions a game

Woth that said he will improve again next year and is exactly the player we need

Steady up!

Using AFL rankings as an indicator Rieilly O'Brien is #26 and that fella that can't kick according to this board is ranked #30

How is Port even considering Dawson.. what can they offer that's even comparable to the Crows? They have shit all picks and won't have much cash on a year or two when they've got to renew the contracts for the younger players.

And they just get deals done - they move players and make it happen. They have plenty of depth and attractive options to get some picks in if needed

He took another step this year but he has been consistently good for 3 years now. He finished 2nd in our board's POTY in 2019 and 3rd in 2020 and 2021.

The fans rate him highly, which is why our board is taking it as well as what I imagine this place did when Gunston asked out.

To me, it seems our board is quite divided. It either recognises Dawson as a great player and a need, or someone that is pretty solid, but overall not worth worrying too much about

Seeing how vital he was to you guys this year (particularly in the 2nd half of the year), I'm firmly in the first category

I know, it bloody sucks when you put in all the effort and then they up and leave just as they get good.

AFL player ratings for 2021 only, Jordan Dawson as the 3rd best general defender.

Mainly an outside receiver with about 30 percent of his 20 disposals per game being contested.

Pure receivers like Brodie Smith go about 25 percent contested. Interceptors like Tom Doedee more like 45 percent.

Dawson is 25 next season.

Where our list build is at, I’d be pretty cautious about using too much draft capital on a skilful outside receiver who just had his first genuine elite year as a 24 year old.

I think we need to roll the dice on as many potential stars via the draft as we can. Not at the point of rounding out our completed core of kids with complimentary pieces. I’d hate to miss out on a Schoenberg, Cook in the draft.

Delighted if we can Jack Martin him in through the pre season draft.

But most likely Port is the better fit.

I'm not going to put too much effort into this argument, but considering his growth from his first year to the current day, I'd argue Dawson is a potential star. Better to take one that's at least 90% proven than one that *might* get there

And that's without pointing out the flaws in the AFL player ratings

I wouldn't say Gunston, he was only on the list for 2 years. More like Lever or Cameron given they showed potential to be A grade players when they left.

Depends where you intend to use him too. We used him everywhere except the ruck. Intercepting tall defender, rebounding defender, wing, high half forward, deep medium forward. Inside mid was where he played in the NEAFL and put up some absolutely absurd stats, though it is NEAFL to be fair.

Can play anywhere you need him but if he's outside of the backline he probably needs the team to be decent to get the most out of him.

3rd in his position in the league is pretty good isn’t it? I would have thought that’s a pretty good reflection of his 2021. Elite at his general defender role.
