I feel you have it about right but what worries me is we have players who can hardly run in our best 22

Dixon was lame in 2021, unable to chase and tackle, unable to lead and mark
Lycett is your typical dinosaur ruck and a solid 8th to 14th best ruck in the comp with no upside.......yet we let Ladhams go
Gray is Gray
Motlop can run but only when he wants to

There is no way a premiership contending 22 can carry that much inertia

I've gone with:
- an extended bench based on need
- limited the number of players who can't or won't run based on 2021 fitness (lycett (just is), dixon (inj), butters (inj), boak (age), motlop (attitude) and gray (age))
- a cue in the rack approach to 2022 focusing on youth to build to a premiership rather than false hope solid performances
- fantasia is always injured so called up houston in the forward pocket due to his marking, defensive pressure and nice boot
- given dixon a gig despite fearing he's finished (I'm hoping this is Marshall's break out year and replaces him or dixon gets new legs in the off season)
- Butters to get over his injury and displace boak adding speed and flare to the middle
- banking on DBJ to return to form

Port Adelaide POWER - Round 1
F: Houston - Dixon - Georgiades
HF: Powell-Pepper - Finlayson - Rozee
C: Amon - Wines - Duursma
HB: Bonner - Aliir - Bergman
B: Jonas (C) - McKenzie - Byrne-Jones

R: Hayes - Butters - Drew

INT: Marshall - Burton - Jones - Boak - Fantasia - Lycett

Port Adelaide POWER - Round 1
F: Gray, Mitch G, Dixon
HF: Rozee, Marshall, Fantasia
C: Duusrma, Wines, Amon
HB: Houston, Jonas, Burton
B: Jones, Cluery, Alir

R: Lycett, Boak, Butters

INT: Bergman, Pick 12, SPP, Drew

Dixon to second ruck, screw his ankles. If he gets Injured Finlayson comes in or Hayes.
Edit forgot Houston

For now the experience of Lycett, Bonner and Motlop listed ahead of the youth of Hayes, Jones and Bergman. I'm hopeful that by the end of the year that will no longer by the case. I'm also curious to see if Marshall can find another role for himself if Finlayson and Georgiades are preferred over him.

Players in brackets are the interchange but where I would like to see them rotate.

Defence still looks poor and terribly undersized. Need to get real midfield time into Butters and Bergman who I think have shown promise to take those roles.

Tall setup forward but ideally Marshall plays a link up role up the ground and Finlayson is also quite mobile. Georgiades and Finlayson as the lead ups and Dixon deep and rotating with Hayes between reserves and 1sts as we ease him out and get games into Hayes.

I forgot no.5 all together! Shame on me

Lycett is shot. This is why it should be Hayes from game 1 in the pre-season and into the real stuff, with Lycett there for when Hayes needs a rest, not the other way around. With coach clueless overridden if he wants to stick with all the older players trying to desperately hold onto his job.

The reality is he has to stick with the older players because next year is probably year 3 of a 3 year premiership window and after that it's a rebuild. There are 7 or 8 older players in our team who are about to fall over the cliff, Lycett is one of them. Replacing Lycett with Hayes will result in a short term drop that will slam our premiership window shut. That's why it won't be done.

I count 7 players, 6 are best 22. We need a smooth transition for these players.

Dylan Williams needs to find another level of fitness to get a fwd pocket spot, with Butters taking midfield minutes, when Gray goes in a year.
Ollie Lord will need to fill out and then challenge Georgiades, Finlayson and Marshall for when Dixon goes in a couple of years.
Sam Hayes should be ready to challenge Lycett next year, Lycett could hang around another couple of years.
Jake Pasini needs to go up a level for whenever Jonas goes, Clurey is a stop-gap for McKenzie at best as he's only 2 years younger.
Motlop I don't consider best 22.
Boak I reckon can last the longest out of all the older guys, but we need SPP to step up and to find a very good mid via trade in that period.

there are 4 under achievers that have to earn back their spot before being given a game next year, they are DBJ, JONAS, MARSHALL, MOTLOP. That means they dont get a game until they have proven themselves in the sanfl

the captaincy has to be under consideration as jonas is hardly best 25 in my books. although i was dead against ollie being made captain last time im actually for it now. I think he has put himself into the position as captain where last time is was another stupid Hinkley decision base on Ollie being some sort of 'chosen one' while his game was no-where near the level it is now.

I think after finishing 5th and 8th in our b and f respectively, Jonas and Byrne Jones are still considered walk up starts in our 22 by the coaches and won’t be starting in the sanfl.

Jonas showed glimpses but ultimately wasn't good enough as a leader of this club, and Byrne-Jones stunk and should have been dropped a bunch of times. The voting system is a sham.
