Worth noting that the AFL states that injuries come into their "formula" - they don't technically weigh into how those come in. Everyone is assuming that means that they assume the list is fully fit, it could just as easily mean the AFL assumes that you can't get a fully fit list and need further assistance.

The long and the short of it is that the AFL makes it up as they go. The reason the formula isn't public has nothing to do with tanking and everything to do with being able to grift as and when they please to suit the AFL's strategic priorities - it has nothing to do with giving all teams a fair and equal chance of competing.
sounds eerily similar to the “fixture”

Exactly so. The AFL serves themselves in the first instance and what they perceive to be in their best interests is not always in ours (or indeed many of the club's) interests.

Cannot believe posters think we are sh*t tongue in cheek or not. We are far from sh*t. Enough uneducated opposition supporters and some media give us a hard time without our own supporters doing it.

that particular poster is not really wrong….we have been getting thrashed when it matters for a while, and winning a couple at the end of the year is fun but meaningless
all the top 4 teams would belt us comprehensively if they felt like it
if new coach can develop a system we should improve quite quickly tho

I'm pro bid tbh. Unless either club make it favorable for us not to bid with an exchange of future picks.

We should absolutely bid on both Daicos and Darcy. Well maybe not so much on Darcy, but if Daicos is the best player, then we should go for him. It won't happen but imagine if the Pies couldn't match it?

Also by bidding on Daicos and the Pies match it, he takes the sometimes poisoned chalice of being the number 1 pick and by doing so, removes that expectation from Jason Horne Francis. As far as I am concerned, bidding on Daicos is a win-win situation whichever way you look at it.

Yeah i can imagine if a lets say Bombers supporter jumped on our forum and started saying how crap we are or Cornes Carro or the such we would be spewing. Dont expect it or need it coming from our supporters.

Yes nailed it.

Every club spends time in the bottom 4.
Its sh1t. Its never fun to lose games.
The best you can hope for in those years is noticeable improvement.
We go that this year. Im happy enough.
Our talent is exceptional. But we are a bit s**t right now.

If there is a marginal difference between Daicos and Porne, then I would give pick 1 to Porne.

If the difference was between JUH and the next person then fine, but the margin is a lot closer. I think it would show a lack of faith in JHF if we say we don't think he is better than Daicos.

By that argument, imagine how devastated and demoralised the very last pick in the draft must feel each year. "I am so sh** that 150 or so other players are rated ahead of me!"

To be honest, if you sat down and talked to a lot of AFL players, a lot of them have mental demons, a lot of them question themselves if they are good enough to play at the level, surprisingly even talented players. Something Grima talked about publicly before, but it is really quite common with players who have had to battle to make it.

Pick 1 is a different ball game though, particularly when it comes to the SA clubs who would likely go hard at him when his contracts come up for negotiation. I am sure it will be used in the psychological arsenal if he is taken at 2 or 3.

I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t we bid? Sure it gives him the number one pick title, but if there are players we miss out on by a pick in the 20-40 range, pretty sure that’s bad list management

Because JHF is the best player in the draft and deserves to be pick 1.

We bid and we give JHF an extra 20k in his contract.
Do two things knock pies/dogs out of the draft and fire up Horney

Pretty sure draftees contracts are locked for 2 years so you can’t pay them extra till their 3rd year.

The AFL do not like us. They’ll use every excuse in the book to not give us one. Ask away, don’t expect one
Now that Brad Scott is a head of football, it could work either way for us...;)

No it is not. He should be as aware as anyone where he sits in the pecking order of the Draft. It has been stated time and time again, the most talented player in the draft is Daicos. Every club should pick the best available talent as they see it at their pick.

If he is going to get upset at not being picked first on merit, or wilt under the psychological arsenal from the SA clubs, then he will indeed struggle in the AFL.

If he is as good as everyone says, then any barbs thrown at him by SA clubs, will be laughed off as he burns them with his talent.

Any contract extension done prior to the contract ending can result in someone getting paid more in the final year or years of the pre existing contract. So by resigning WAP or Powell to an extension, they probably got a nice little bump in pay for 2022

Don’t think they get the bump til the 3rd year similar to Boyd who left after 1 year for a mil a year but he only got his oringinal contract in his second year then got the mil in his 3rd year

like the above poster said even if you renegotiate your first 2 years pay are locked in

I don't think it is as clear cut as you make it out to be. Ie... https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/202...e-number-one-what-separates-daicos-and-horne/

While I think Daicos is potentially much better than Hawks Mitchell, he shares the same stat padding traits of taking 3 disposals to go 5m, he is just a significantly better user of the football once he gets out into space. Horne has more the feel of Martin/Fyfe/Petracca type of footballers. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a ball magnet mid like Daicos if he was available, he has the potential to be like Judd depending on the players around him.

I just don't think it is as clear cut, if both were available in the draft who would we take. People just seem overly obsessed with making Collingwood pay more, because they will match it for sure.

Every club should pick the best available talent as they see it at their pick.

Best is subjective. We knew nobody else would have taken Phillips last year until GC, it was why we tried to trade down our pick last year. He could have gone 3rd, could have gone 5th, could have gone later. We wanted Phillips but could have taken him with a range of different picks had we moved our pick around.

If he is going to get upset at not being picked first on merit, or wilt under the psychological arsenal from the SA clubs, then he will indeed struggle in the AFL.

Psychology plays an important role in sports. I don't think it will impact how he performs on-field but some players have a different type of ego, he mentioned he really wanted to go number one, I don't think that would be something would bring up in a video interview if it was something that didn't mean anything to him.

If he is as good as everyone says, then any barbs thrown at him by SA clubs, will be laughed off as he burns them with his talent.

Maybe, maybe not.

l agree......JHF has said he WANTS TO BE #1 so why dont we give him what he wants. l wouldn't try naming Darcy as it could back fire and what if we bid on Daicos and Collingwood let him go to us then in 2 years he ends up with them...We have lost out big time...No Daicos and no JHF.
