At a guess they were separated and going through marriage counselling or something, but weren't actually split up and officially 'on the market' (unlike their house now is), that is until she cottoned on to his behaviour. That's the only thing I can think of that makes the conversation make any sense.

I have a feeling ten years from now we are going to hear some interesting versions about what happened in the football department transitions after Scott and Joyce left.
