I have just seen the TV audience in the UK alone for the the soccer Euro final for England v Italy and it peaked at 31 million. To get this into perspective that is over half of the UK population and we think we are big when we get about a 1/4 of our population watching the AFL grand final.

31 million isn't just over half the UK population, it's actually about 46% (based on mid-2020 population estimate), which to be fair is still a very large audience.
The hype about England being in the final no doubt drew in plenty of casual viewers who normally wouldn't watch.

Probably and do think that only about 25% of our population watch our grand final
Over 5 billion world wide watch the Euros and again you have that's huge for a 3 week event

Demetriou owning his BIG mistake, i.e baulking on North to the Gold Coast, NO.

“We found that every time we expanded the competition … you had the same comments from clubs and they went something like this - where are they going to get the players from, you are going to dilute some of our distribution dividends, you are going to take some of our members, not enough sponsorship dollars, the standard and quality of the play will go down,” Demetriou told Weekend Read.

“Interestingly, we expended our competition three times and it was always though global financial crisis. The last one when the GWS Giants came in it came off the back of 2007 and 2008, and everyone thought this was our Armageddon.

After more than 20 years and a number Premierships inc last year the Storm still only have 28,000 members in a city of over 5 Million compared to the lowest AFL club North Melb at 46,000 and very rarely fill the 30,000 AAMI Park = not that successful!

By comparison The Swans are on 50,000 members and GWS 30,000 already after only 10 years.!

That's right. The Storm really aren't that far ahead of the Giants in any sustainable sense despite having 12 years on them and being the first team into the city.
They have similar member numbers, probably less junior participants (i.e. all of Melbourne versus western sydney), home grown talent....and that's whilst being quite comfortably the most dominant sporting team in the country this millennium with 6 premierships and 3 of the best league players ever playing for them for most of their existence.

There are 6 under 18 teams in all of Melbourne...

...and nearly all the kids on this try scoring list have Pacific islander names....

All the best to those 100 odd 16 and 17 year old kids, but that it is not much evidence of an impact.

Nobody has commented on the NRL Article above that says the WEST IS WON. That headline says the code war in Western Sydney is over led by NRL Paramatta and Penrith. Are they premature in declaring that.
With GWS still ticking over with the above membership and has not faded away yet which is inline with the general view that another generation is needed to justify the funds allocated to date.
Was there actually a code war or was it a beat up by the media up there.

The NRL Semi Finals rated a total of 2.81m over the weekend (with streaming & NZ to come). This figure is up 25% on the 2020 Finals series. Streaming is predicted to add about half a million or so to the total, with an expected lift of about 110% on last years figures.

Melb NRL ratings were up 198% on last years semis with no AFL on. The "non heartland" cities up 133% overall (Per +66%, Adl +33%). In the "heartland", Syd ratings were up 22%, while Bris was up 10%. Metro +29%, Reg +16%. FTA +25%. Fox STB +26%

The 2021 NRL Final series to date is rating up 24% on 2020 (+16% on 2019) on FTA/FoxSTB and 33% better than the 2020 series with streaming estimates included.

Without streaming, the 2021 NRL series is the best rating since 2014 hit 8.309m for week 1/2. 2021 should well and truly beat that when streaming is included.

With all things factored in we predict that the NRL leads the finals ratings race at the end of week 2 by just 0.42%, about 38,000. (9.17m to 9.14m) This estimate includes Nine/9NOW, Fox/Kayo/Go/Now.

Pre Kayo

2016 Broncos/Cowboys Semi hit 1.65 Metro 790k Reg 490k Fox 331k NZ 41k (est) but without streaming or bvod 2014 SeaEagles v Bulldogs hit1,523m with NZ rating 51k. This data did not include Telstra, Foxtel Go/Now or other streaming if any)

Its a city of 5 million that is rabidly AFL supporting for the most part.

The Swans are a hundred and twenty years old and have been playing matches in Sydney since 1978. Theyd want to have gained some members in that time.
GWS member figures are at best - and thats based off revenue which shows that the average spend per member is very low indeed. The Storm are barely 20 years old, they have a better attendance average than the Giants - in either city or combined.

Interesting fun fact - the Storms 28,000 members compares favourably to the Swans 27,000 members after theyd been in Sydney for 20 years.

They are fairly successful - for a NRL club, and should be framed in an NRL context. They have the third best attendance in the NRL (in 2019), behind Broncos and Eels and the third best membership numbers behind the Eels and Rabbitohs.

...and nearly all the kids on this try scoring list have Pacific islander names....

So what?

So what?

There is no objective reason they "should be framed in an NRL context" rather than say in a Melbourne context when making comparisons with AFL clubs.

The Swans 27,000 members 20 years ago would dwarf the top NRL club then almost as much as it does now. 20 years ago, 28,000 members would probably exceed the smaller melbourne AFL clubs but now it is dwarfed by them

Theres no objective reason why they shouldnt be framed in an NRL context. There are very subjective reasons why certain posters want to compare them to clubs that have existed for a century or more longer than the Storm though.

They are an NRL club. They absolutely should be framed in an NRL context. As far as NRL clubs are concerned, the Storm do very well. Particularly compared to other single NRL club cities.

AFL in Melbourne, particularly with attendance and membership is something of a phenomena in its own right. Not every club has to be AFL sized to be successful.

Not quite the point, the irony is that both the Swans and Storm had similar membership numbers over a fixed period of time. Not that the NRL had members 20 years ago - they didnt really kick off the membership train until 2011.

Another fun fact is the win-loss records of each respective team for their first 20 years...

Swans in Sydney: 43%, 194-253
Melbourne Storm: 65%, 340-181

...which I believe is quite precisely the point weewilly was making.

Oh and BTW the RL had only 97,000 on CH 9 last night they are very bad figures in its second biggest market!
The RU did even worse on CH 10 with only 51,000 in Melbourne! The advertisers on both channels would not be happy!

Nobody said it should though. You're the one who said they "should" be framed in an NRL context after Weewilly used a different frame.

There are very subjective reasons why certain posters want to compare them to clubs that have existed for a century or more longer than the Storm though.

So what? You are the one trying to assert that a particular frame is the only one that should be used.

Enormous energy from people with "very subjective reasons" goes into deriding the Giants' impact. The fact by most measures they are nose to nose despite the Giants being the second club in Sydney, have had markedly less success and are only half as old, are very "interesting facts" in that context

Sure, when being compared to other NRL clubs they should be compared with NRL clubs.

The comparisons were with the smallest Melbourne AFL clubs and the two Sydney AFL clubs

AFL in Melbourne, particularly with attendance and membership is something of a phenomena in its own right.

And the fact it is it is a Melbourne phenomena as much as it is an AFL phenomena - also evidenced by Melbourne Victory. People are very accustomed to purchasing memberships in Melbourne.

Not every club has to be AFL sized to be successful.

So what?

Not quite the point, the irony is that both the Swans and Storm had similar membership numbers over a fixed period of time. Not that the NRL had members 20 years ago - they didnt really kick off the membership train until 2011.

Not sure you know what irony is.

The fact that Victorian rugby league participation - which is very very low as it is - is dominated by Pacific Islanders in Melbourne is a strong bit of evidence that the Storm have had little impact on people taking up the game here.

They have crowds and memberships that are good compared to Sydney NRL clubs and poor compared to AFL clubs after an absurdly unique first two decades of success

'Word has snuck out of rugby league-land that an agreement may not be far away on a new free-to-air deal between Nine and the NRL.

Diary is informed Nine is hoping it may be possible to ink a five-year deal as early as NRL grand final day, which would allow it to showcase a new contract in time for the October 3 showpiece.'
