Who was the last mature age rookie ruck from the WAFL that was passable at AFL level? Who in the WAFL now would be able to carry the no. 1 ruck for a month if required?

"Talls take longer to develop" and yet you rarely see ruckmen in their mid-20's get drafted.
There would have to be a few WAFL/VFL/SANFL mature rucks running around that could hold their own at AFL level? Surely?

Doubt it.

There is just a certain threshold that must be met athletically, being an acceptable combination of height, strength, athleticism and skill. The actually pool of people that would meet the required threshold is very low. Anyone who could or would be passable and able to hold their own get snapped up and given every opportunity.

The height and strength element are key. Imagine it's hard for a 203cm (almost minimum requirements these days) bloke to gain the required strength to play at AFL level while working and playing part-time. Normally always takes them a couple of years to develop that strength in an AFL system.

AFL ruckmen are generally well over 200cm now and going forward. WAFL ruckmen are generally well under that height.

NO TO SPS.

It's hard for Williams to develop if he doesn't get some solid minutes.

Which is why wasting our time with Vardy this year was a real head scratcher.

In the WAFL, Williams is up against smaller/undersized ruckman different to Gawn, Witts, Nank, Darcy types.

And when he comes in, he spends a fair bit of time on the bench or FWD, so really other than chop outs, he's not getting a huge amount of exposure against the best.

Only played 62% game time in his games in 2021. Big year coming up.
