Soccer victimhood will place this story within their mantra that the popular footballs are predominantly white bread outposts intent on keeping down the more cosmopolitan, more worldly soccer fiefdoms.
There are at least two problems with that perspective (amongst many):
1. It's not just about having an issue with foreign ownership, stacks of once Australian-made products have fallen into foreign ownership, it's that a lot of soccer ownership is by dubious people. And if it's not appalling human rights, it's the strong likelihood that money laundering and related nefarious activities are involved, which should never be countenanced.
2. It was the FFA themselves who implemented their very own anti-wog policy! So it's a bit rich to go blaming the white bread established, wealthy winter football codes and their followers!

Wowee this will be worth a watch

Again, credit where it's due. There is so much shadiness backing the aleague franchises and yet they have managed to con this slither of the woke middle-class into thinking the a league is some progressive mission. Foreign kleptocrats and opportunist land developers having their bidding done for them by people who think this farce is a cultural improvement. Smart
Should be a fascinating watch on Monday night!

"City are of course 78% owned by an extremely wealthy monarchial UAE dictatorship that has an appalling human rights record with a further 12% ownership by two Chinese state companies. The CCP's dictatorship and appalling human rights record including the mass herding of Muslims into detention camps is well-known."
Very few people in Australian would know about this! Its good that the ABC Four Corners is about to expose it!

I have sufficient knowledge to know that you cannot make definitive statements about "average revenue per member" based on the information available in a financial statement.

My skills and experience comfortably exceed the necessary level to have confidence in that statement. Any competent analyst, who is aware of when they are making assumptions and the implications of those assumptions, would arrive at that understanding

That we cannot get basic comparisons is by design.

That we cannot get basic comparisons is by design.

As has been discussed ad nauseum over the decade or so we've been doing this. We can only interpret the information we have, and arrive at our own conclusions. There is very little in club annual reports we can be definitive about except where we have definitive comparison line by line data. Which is why for a decade of doing the financial threads we've always relied on onstructive discussions from a variety of contributors, and not just on the opinion of any one poster. The work remains a collobarative effort.

Not to mention - anonymous foreign-based property developers own Western United (the same ones who have wrangled a large block of land out of Wyndham City council).

What are the odds that there is an unknown Chinese component amongst those anonymous foreign-based property developers?

Anyone ever heard of Evergrande?

It's about time (in fact, well beyond time) a critical media spotlight is finally being cast on the shenanigans of the A-League and it's conga line of dodgy franchise owners (one can't, by definition, call them clubs). Another worthy of investigation would be the principal Melbourne Storm franchise owner, Matt Tripp.

Yes the background of the "investors" should be open to public inspection esp as public land is involved!

Hopefully it goes to this on Monday.

It does matter a great deal whether its foreign or domestic investors. You have for profit investors being gifted residential growth corridor land and are apparently allowed to remain anonymous and the business case hidden

The lack of transparency is frankly disgraceful.

48K in locked down Melbourne for a Friday night prelim with no AFL on....

Will be interesting to see the impact a Storm-less grand final has on the NRL's ratings. A possible mitigation will be the fact Melbourne's in lockdown so Vic viewers may have nothing else to do at that time but watch anyway.

Was always going to be the case, despite the hand wringing articles about “giving in to the AFL” by the RL media in Sydney. They made the completely correct and sensible decision to move it. I reckon they would’ve kissed goodbye to at least 150k of that 193k in Melbourne if they hadn’t moved.

Exactly. Would have been diabolical. Instead it gets the afl grand final arvo to itself effectively

Why should taxpayers money be used to pay for sports stadiums.?
If sports teams want new stadiums or stadium rebuilds that should use their own money and not rely on taxpayers

Economic flow to the city/state for one.

Take Adelaide Oval - specifically cited by pretty much everyone since it opened - there were very tangible benefits from having a new stadium located right in the CBD for CBD tourism and business. 30-50,000 visitors to town every weekend during winter cant be ignored.

So long as the teams/sports pay a fair rent - thats only partially the case in Adelaide where the SANFL/SACA makes all the money - then I dont mind so much. I draw the line at tens of millions of taxpayer money flowing to training facilities though.
