Why I think Eagles can win the premiership next year

We don't have the leg speed in the midfield let alone elsewhere to do what Melbourne did to the Bulldogs last night. That said, the game plan doesn't help.
Nothing slow about Yeo, Shuey, Redden, Nelson, Coke, Petruccelle, Rotham, Rioli, Ryan, Cripps, Jones, Sheppard, etc

When we are coached to both corral and not hit the contest at pace, we look slow.

It feels more about doing it for longer - ie endurance

Have another look at the Melbourne game plan and see how many second third and fourth efforts their leaders make. And not just at the start of quarters

This is biased optimism. Sure we can play finals next year but I cant see us winning a flag unless something drastic happened. Like all of the other top teams being wiped out by an asteroid or similar.

Exactly.

And looking at Melbourne for every Petracca, pickett or Langdon there is an Oliver, Viney or Brayshaw.

Not slow plodders, but hardly elite footspeed across the whole squad either. Fast of mind and/or fast by foot is key

Shuey has lost a step, Redden isn't particularly quick by speedster standards, Yeo is much better in the contest than run and spread and should feed to the outside players, the rest are either flankers or average to below average players not midfielders. I've maintained the position the player type mix isn't right in the midfield and it needs to change.

Funny how much faster players look when they hit a contest at speed or take off with a purpose.

Never seen pace from Sheed or Gaff (or Hutchings) but the others have raced away a la Melbourne. As stated earlier, Brayshaw, Viney and Trac are not speedsters.

Agree with your comment about hitting contests at speed and clearly, something we need to work on. Clean and crisp disposal also contributes to speed which, if we don't have the foot speed to run away from teams means we need to commit to speed in ball movement and that's on the game plan.

As for the three Melbourne players you listed, see the ball movement comment above, all excel in that.

In short, a good preseason, a good midfield and good game plan. Unity will follow.
Need to whack 'em around the head a few times with a telephone book, just to knock out that
dogmatic entitled mindset, or knock a bit of mongrel into them?
All have to take HTF-up pills at training sessions.
We are due a good lump of luck from the Footy Gods.
Last but not least, have the team avoid baths and bathwater for the entire season!

Apparently seeing the dees train flagged to simmo that our training standards must go up.

Secondly, rumours are that Tim Kelly has ruffled a few feathers within the team. Could be a reason for the so called poor unity. I have no other details other than it came from a current players mouth.

Simon Goodwin in his post game interview said something so important. The team is selfless.
This is where we have slipped since 2018, and our performance against Collingwood was an example of this.

I have faith in Adam Simpson to get back to 2018 selflessness.

Adam Simpson has hit the nail on the head. He called for unity throughout the club.
The vibe in some of the games this year was bad, especially in the Hurn milestone game against Collingwood.
THE game against St Kilda where we were 33 points up and then capitulated was another game where care for teammates went out the window.

Getting Scofield and Knights are 2 personalities who will ignite the club.
Kennedy I believe will have a great season next year with a unified midfield and defense.
Shannon Hurn is good enough for 2 more years.

Simpsons game plan is fine.
I am writing this post straight after Melbourne's great performance in the grand final.
Melbourne is a team of unified players and they openly speak about this.
In 2018 we were unified even without Natanui, Gaff and Shepperd.

Natanui will play even a greater season than this and last years AA seasons.
If Eagles have a great pre-season with the new unity will not have many injuries like Melbourne experienced this year

I will be there at the pre-season training and will write reports wjth the emphasis on vibe

Missing the finals this year will also hurt the Eagles but a anither reason for their climb up the ladder

I don't know why but strangely I really needed to read this, so thank you.

I think a lot of us have become very negative about the club and I'm the first to put my hand up and say I haven't really enjoyed my footy for the last two years.

Looking forward to your reports and hopefully a much more positive vibe to the Eagles in 2022!

I studied the 3rd quater against Brisbane in round 23 and noticed the effort of the players in getting back in the game.

The fightback stopped when silly Cole gave a goal away.

This short period was vintage Eagles and was noted by Simpson in an interview.

I believe that Simpson knows that the eagles were not in the right head space this season.

same for me. I’ve really lost interest in the last few years, which is sad, because I was so heavily invested for pretty much my whole life. I do feel like we’ve still got a good core group, and a bit of a kick up the bum from some new coaches will hopefully help. 2 years i reckon we’ve got left with this group. Some of the senior players need to be asked how much their friendships with NN, Gaff and Shep means to them, because they’ve done nothing to help them get a flag for the past 2 seasons.

When Simmo arrived our standard, at least in terms of fitness was elite. What changed? Eagles have always reliably been one of the fittest teams in the league. If we aren't now, we need to refocus.

Another important fact is that Melbourne themselves did not get into the 8 last year.

This year they came with a unified team, probably noticing that they had some real talent at training and went for it.
Bulldogs were too buggered to finish off the grand final so the margin is not a real indicator of the 2 teams.

So the feeling that Melbourne will start their own dynasty is not that simple.

The Eagles have the players to go for it next year. Just the energy needs to be there.

The pre-season is now so vital.

Schofield is a tough nut and Knights is a logical midfield person, just what we need

I'm sure there's more to it, but hard grounds at our new home ground and our new training base can't have helped.

It seems, and I'm just guessing here, that the S&C staff have to walk the fine line of enough vs too much training as overdoing it leads to impact (fractures)/degenerative (OP) injuries.

Of course we've seen in 2021 what the results of under doing it are.

Our history under Simmo has shown we are more likely to go deeper in a year where not much was expected of us coming into it. And in years with big expectations, we fall short. There won't be huge expectation next year one would think.

It feels like we're a million miles off the pace at the moment, but no different to were Demons and Tigers would have felt the season before their flags. And as we all felt when Freo beat us early in 2015 and swans 2018.

Lightning to strike thrice we hope. Can't see it happening without at least a significant swing towards more contested and physical football.

You actually heard that from a current player ?

Subiaco Oval's dimensions required us to play a run and carry game (let alone the historic standard of free flowing running of the WAFL), one that typically exploited opposition on the outside but under Simpson, we've become ball control maintain possession look for the "right" option then kick through the opposition. Undoubtedly, that contributes to our slow appearance.

The team I picked a few posts ago to me looks like
The best on paper. It's the other things that are the problem
