Just seems like there is want to find every reason possible to justify why Gresh shouldn't play midfield despite his performances suggesting otherwise. Especially when we have a glaring hole in there for someone with his attributes.

He is far too talented to be sitting in a forward pocket. And if that is the plan for him, we might as well trade him because we wouldn't be using him to his fullest potential.
I probably think a blended midfield/forward role is right for him, but I don’t agree that playing him in the forwardline would be a waste. It’s a judgement call about how to best use his talents. If he could kick 40-50 goals as a small forward (which he looked on track to do if he developed well as a forward), that is incredibly valuable. It’s arguably harder to find a small forward who can do that, than it is to find someone who can do what Gresham does in midfield.

Unfortunately we've picked the worst year to try and get back into the draft.

Looks like we will see very little player movement compared to recent years.

I think the most likely way we see another pick before our NGA's is if we split our first pick unfortunately.

interesting to hear trade radio state the similarities between the dees and us. they noted that melbourne like us had two trade periods back to back where they traded their first rounders away.

but here is where there is a difference and is what is making things hard for us now. melbourne still made good on their mid range picks, specifically their 2nd rounders. they got 3-4 premiership players in those two years they traded them away. fritz and petty are two i can remember but there were another two.

we didnt do this. in fact we seem to have a pretty strong form line of trading away future 2nd rounders. which is why we are in the tight spot we are in now.

we'd love to upgrade our pick, but we have no 2nd rounder to help get that deal done. we've essentially traded away the supporting picks needed to help stuff happen with the first rounder.

now that there is restrictions on player movement (reduced cap which means clubs are tight) everything is now about pick trades. we have backed our selves into a corner where the depth we have, won't get any attractive deals to leave AND we don't have picks to facilitate any big moves.

Hopefully Ratten has the guts to drop Seb when he is isn't performing. It's been tiring to see the same senior players get picked no matter how they play. That needs to change.
He didn’t have the guts to drop Hill on the back of 6 weeks of pitiful football. And we wonder why Dunstan cracked the shits?

Trading future 2nds has got us Jack Steele and Jack Higgins.

I'm not going to complain about not having a 2nd this year.

Yeah seems like a weird move to just keep on grabbing random mediocre players:

Newnes
Saad
Plowman
Williams (maybe a bit better)
Martin
Hewett
Oscar McDonald
McGovern
Newman
Kennedy
Young
etc
I’m not big on laughing at teams that absolutely schooled us during the season.

Our game against the Blues was probably our most pathetic effort all year

thats only two picks since 2016. yet i am pretty sure we've been trading them every year.

we seem to not preference trading over drafting for anything past the first round.

Yeah but I'm confident his manager would have said it behind closed doors - that's how these negotiations work - "we couldn't possibly accept that number" - "ok fine we'll take it".
They’ve absolutely burnt some early picks as well. O’Brien, Dow, SPP, Cunningham, Jaksch, Marchbank, Kennedy, etc. They’ve been obsessed with creating a team of early draft picks without a clear list strategy. Stinks of Silvagni.

To make matters worse, Ratten talked the talk on dropping senior players only to follow through by dropping Butler. Imagine the rocket he would have sent through the playing group if he had Billings and Hill playing VFL.

Funny thing is, Richo DID drop Billings, and it worked for Billings. Also, Richo was gone about six weeks later.

Butler is a tough one because he is the epitomy of a "where did that come from" player. He doesn't need much of the ball or much previous form. I thought his form warranted being dropped in the first half of the year, but I can understand why he wasn't dropped.

Hill and Billings had injuries that could have been used to make the case for omission, as well as their form (Hill more than Billings).

If your eye test tells you Tom Phillips is on Billings level..

You need your eyes tested. I said Billings is a slightly better player than Tom Phillips.

Which is quite accurate when you line up their numbers.

Phillips finished 6th in B&F in Pies 2018 Grand Final year

Billings best effort was a 4th in 2019 in a team that finished 5th last

Owens at 11 :(

11. Mitch Owens (St Kilda Next-Generation Academy)
Best position:
Utility
Height, weight: 190cm, 85kg
Recruited from: Sandringham Dragons
Projected draft range: 10-30
Plays like: David Mundy
September ranking: Outside-20
Rationale: Growing around 15cm between the start of 2019 and the beginning of 2021, Owens is a late developer who only in the last month of the NAB League season entered first round contention. His performance as a late callup for Vic Metro in a trial match against Vic Country was the game that elevated his draft standing, securing 29 disposals, one goal and two score assists. He immediately backed this up with strong NAB League play for Sandringham. With his movement, overhead marking, ball winning capabilities and rapid rate of improvement, Owens is an upside choice who with continued rapid improvement could be one of this draft's very best. Had the season not been cut short, while there is an element of speculation in rating Owens this high, with the way he was developing, he may well have been rated even more highly.
Strengths:
Late growth
Rate of development
Agility
Speed
Courage
Intercept marking
Aerial marking
Versatility
Inside/outside balance
Contested ball winning
Weaknesses:
Unclear best position
Not as advanced as other top end prospects

Yes but thankfully the Pies and Western Bulldogs get another free hit at picking up top tier talent, while we get shafted the first chance we get to pick someone up.

Wouldn't read too much into it since it's Knightmare and his rankings are always questionable compared to everyone else's. Cal Twomey (who gets the best mail from the recruiters) doesnt have him in his top 30 and also has Windhager in front of him.

All the Seb fans... nobody wanted him.

There's a reason for that.

I wouldn't mind if he's on the list if he doesn't play. But he'll play. He's 2 time best and fairest winner seb ross after all.

Depth? Fine. But i'll believe that when i see it.

Nobody wanted him.
You don’t know that, you’re assuming nobody wanted him. If he played for Geelong you’d say how do they do it, he took a team friendly deal or some other spin.

He reportedly signed for two with an option for a third making him a saint for life. Fact coaches gives votes in our b&f he’s won two and finished seventh this year so whilst you don’t rate him our coaching staff must.

Got my eyes tested last week.
How about yours.
Read earlier Billings stats are not far off petracca...
So I guess Phillips is not far off petracca either?

here’s a reality check

Petracca

Billings

Phillips.

Seriously though,
Billings much maligned for who was picked after him will play 200+ games for the mighty saints
And he’s clearly in the top 10 players in our side, and would be in any AFL side.

would be top 10 wing/hf in the league.

FFS a weakness is an unclear best position !!! How about if he still wets the bed, is that a strength or a weakness?
