If the club reckons Dunstan "wasn't part of the plan going forward" why haven't they de-listed him? OOC and an UFA - cost to the Saints in de-listing him is zilch.

All this came to head AFTER he was dropped for the last game and replaced by a player who had under performed in exactly the same role for weeks on end and had barely played for the previous 6 weeks.

Now, unless you are deliberately trying to p*** someone off that's very poor player management.

Because he's a restricted agent.

Keep for existing contract: no, get compsensation.
Delist: get nothing, oppo get him as DFA free.

Odd issue to take apart really, club well within their rights to keep him on books whilst stating "yeah, we're not offering a new one, you can walk later" after stating he's not getting a new one so best be prepared to walk.

I like him as a De Goey or Grey. Some high impact time on ball but maybe 60% forward.
I think that’s his go. I’m not sure he’s an overly effective defensive mid so he can get caught going the other way. He’s not overly quick which also hurts him defensively. He’s evasive so offensively he uses that to break open from packs. I think there’s definitely a spot for him rotating through the midfield though. It’s good having flexibility.

did anyone just catch Barrett trying to call SOS out on bullshit RE: players renegotiating on less coin

only for SOS to re-iterate that its true

then barrett pushes it again, and SOS gave an example LOL

then the very next sentence questions rendall how much grundy is on, despite rendall actually having worked at the pies

fmd does barrett think he knows everything?

We keep the players other clubs reject (dont want )
Players generally leave for three main reasons:

1: More money
2: More opportunity
3: Chance to win a flag

In Billings’ case there are very few clubs who have any space in their cap to offer him so much more money that he’d want to leave the club he’s been at his whole career, and where his mates are.

Any that do like Norf are probably of no interest to Jack, as he’d rather stay at a club who are closer to playing finals than be even richer than he already is.

He’s also not likely to get more opportunity at a new club as he gets loads of opportunity here, and the clubs he might see as a better chance of winning a flag at most likely don’t have an inch of cap space to spare. Or a need for someone who plays his role, in the off chance that they do.

So suggesting that the fact he’s re-signed means “no-one wants him” is jumping to a very big conclusion.

Most guys who “test the market” end up staying. It doesn’t mean no other club wanted them.

No its not, he has had an offer since early in the year and no one came knocking, thats fairly well known and a good reality check for Seb

Gresh is more your needs to proof something soon its later then you think type of player to me
I think he was starting to prove he’s a midfield prior to the injury. Similar career path to GAJ where the were both more than effective small forwards before transitioning into the middle. Unfortunately for Gresh, his body isn’t holding up.

If you saw the running he does and the space he was making, it made sense to give it to him more, most of the time he was ignored and we would bomb it to a pack down the line. Static.

We drafted him so he could receive the ball, if not what in hell did we get him for.

As for on non negotiables, he was terrible before the bye, after that he was asked to play HBF and was very very good. And he did not shirk his responsibility in tackling.

I will accept he deserved a whack for his terrible games in the first half of the season, but the second half, co-incidently when we had some better players back, he looked so much better.

People can blame the club for recruiting Hill, but he wasn't recruited to be Jack Steele. Don't blame Hill for something he is not. As for a HBF being easy, give me a break, no position is easy. One thing you wont have is a direct opponent so you can run around as much as your tank will let you. Perfect for Hill and he showed so much better form in the second half.

it is just wrong to blame him for wanting Hill to be the matchwnner. He isn't and never has been.

Last year it didn't actually make any sense to give it to him. Our game plan seemed to be to not take the easy dish off and move the ball cleanly by foot to a player that had lead up at it about 30 meters away. It was ridiculous because it seemed to go against the way we played footy. He was much more effective when we changed to the run and gun chaos ball game plan. I hope we aren't heading back to the WCE style again it was excruciating. It was like watching under 9s trying to execute skills.

Thats about where he sits. Can recall he told the club he wanted a midfield spot and guessing he backed them into a corner and hence the calls to leave him as a mid and try and replace him with another small forward, about 2019. Play where you best suit the team IMO, certainly capable of kicking 50. Cant say that about any other player on our list apart from the FF. Membrey could. Imagine King with his 50, Membrey 30-40 and Gresham 35-40 and that is quite possible , it is not pie in the sky stuff. Nothing beats scoreboard pressure.

Body not holding up has cut many a promising players career short
Fingers crossed for him, we need him to have a big 2022

Do you think Steele is a one position inside mid? Bytel may suprise you. Seeing him rest forward he had good positional and marking skills.

Even if he is a one position inside mid, he is one that actually can kick and defends with tackling and without the ball.

I think he's much more of a full time mid than Steele. His skills are good though. Not seen heaps to suggest he's massively defensive yet but he's still a very promising kid.

Pretty sure he's UFA.

8 Years at the club - doubt he's in the top 25% of salaries

Just seems like there is want to find every reason possible to justify why Gresh shouldn't play midfield despite his performances suggesting otherwise. Especially when we have a glaring hole in there for someone with his attributes.

He is far too talented to be sitting in a forward pocket. And if that is the plan for him, we might as well trade him because we wouldn't be using him to his fullest potential.
My only concern with him there is his Achilles. For a player who relies on his power, agility and speed it concerns me a lot.

There’s a reason NOBODY at an AFL club will give him the time of day.

He's getting to Hanners level of contract now. 2 years with handful fo games on big money. He's probably a long term injury off being Paul Ahern.

Not only that, you are comparing him to a champion. No offence but I dont see the point in comparing the career path of Gresham to Ablett who played 357 games at a very high level not counting his individual awards and kicked a shedful of goals. Maybe a Toby Greene or Robbie Gray that way the expectation is a bit more realistic.

interesting to hear trade radio state the similarities between the dees and us. they noted that melbourne like us had two trade periods back to back where they traded their first rounders away.

but here is where there is a difference and is what is making things hard for us now. melbourne still made good on their mid range picks, specifically their 2nd rounders. they got 3-4 premiership players in those two years they traded them away. fritz and petty are two i can remember but there were another two.

we didnt do this. in fact we seem to have a pretty strong form line of trading away future 2nd rounders. which is why we are in the tight spot we are in now.

we'd love to upgrade our pick, but we have no 2nd rounder to help get that deal done. we've essentially traded away the supporting picks needed to help stuff happen with the first rounder.

now that there is restrictions on player movement (reduced cap which means clubs are tight) everything is now about pick trades. we have backed our selves into a corner where the depth we have, won't get any attractive deals to leave AND we don't have picks to facilitate any big moves.
I think the issue is
Gresham's field kicking is an area for improvement, but it would be a handful of blokes who would be at Daniel's kicking level.
leo cough cough Connolly and Jack Sinclair both are at that level. Leo not yet but will be and Sincs is there.

I remember hearing something during the grand final call about Melbourne using Mark Williams training footballs to improve their skills. Something about lines being painted on the ball to help with knowing if the ball is spinning the correct way the player wants it too.

Edit: I think that's how Melbourne got better at their foot skills.

That's right. I think Williams sells his own footballs with those lines on them, he was on The Front Bar this year or last plugging them.
