Both Clark and Coffield were drafted in 2017 with a view that both can become future permanent mids, this plan has not worked out after 4 years... I know they have both show glimpses, but for now they are still “potentials” and we’ve seen true young mids from other sides coming on after 1 and 2 years (Sydney’s Campbell, Gulden, Freo’s Serong).. part of the reason we brought in a new head of player development. Now could we have drafted better in 2017? Not clear cut. the only other true mids after pick 7-8 were Charlie Constable and James Warpel, so not a lot of mids talent to pick from that year either, Or you go for Naughton instead of Coffield.

Now if Clark and Coffield are now told to play full time mids and basically shadow/train with Steele, Crouch and Jones the entire pre-season, it may still happen for them.. but they need to be put in one position and settle quick..

We have a lot of players who have not settled in 1 position: Coffield, Clark, Gresham, Billings, Battle, Long, Hill. Hopefully this will improve. we can easily see Battle, Long move on.

Let's not get it Twisted Clark's year was wrecked due to a broken Jaw and the concussion after that he had an unlucky year with injury. HE showed enough to suggest he is still going to be an outstanding player and maybe a future captain of the club, i see that in him. Coffield, you don't get rid of a player who finished top 5 in the B&F at the age of 20 and saved a final with his performance. He might have a chip on his shoulder because he got dropped a couple of times, so lets see how he responds this year, again he hasn't even turned 22 yet.. i don't think we will be heavily involved this year, lets just stay the course, our best 22 is good enough i have no doubt. We're not far off the Dees all things being equal..

Ahern did multiple ACLs.

Gresh has had a back stress fracture and an achilles. Totally unrelated injuries.

Would be more concerned if he was doing constant soft tissues.

More that three missed seasons and clubs will get gun shy about signing him and move on. He's on big coin and right now he's not able to play. Another one and it's a Hanners type of scenario.

Something's happening!

A young Roo is the latest name on the ruck merry-go-round as big men become the focus of this year’s trade period

Tristan Xerri is the newest name on the ruck merry-go-round as the potential implications begin from Tiger Callum Coleman-Jones’ impending arrival at North Melbourne.

St Kilda is on the hunt for a younger ruckman to partner Rowan Marshall beyond next year, which looms as veteran big man Paddy Ryder’s last in the AFL.

It’s understood the Saints have honed in on contracted Kangaroo Xerri after also showing interest in Western Bulldog Jordon Sweet, who remains without a contract for 2022 and is linked to West Coast.

The Bulldogs have made Sweet an offer to stay, but he was overlooked in the finals for Lewis Young, who has since requested a trade to Carlton.

North Melbourne would have to be willing to trade Xerri, who isn’t out of contract until the end of next year.

He averaged 21.5 disposals, 15.5 contested possessions, 5.5 clearances and 26.2 hit-outs in six VFL games this year, but played only eight matches at senior level, all in the second half of the season.

Todd Goldstein remains the clear No. 1 ruck option at the Roos but turns 34 next year, when his three-year contract expires.

Tom Campbell kept 201cm Xerri out of the side up until Round 13 while serving as Goldstein’s deputy.

North has identified Coleman-Jones as Goldstein’s ruck successor and convinced him to cross to Arden St, with a trade set to be brokered with Richmond before Wednesday week.

But that would leave Xerri, 22, third in line in the ruck at the Kangaroos as he enters his fifth season at AFL level.

Several other clubs, including Hawthorn, the Bulldogs, Brisbane, Sydney and even Geelong, are also surveying the ruck market.

I like the look of Xerri.

Can anyone be an absolute legend and give me a brief summary of today? For both the forum, trade radio for us and the AFL in general?

cheers
Forum-wise

- Seb resigned
- squabble about Seb
- more squabble about Dunstan
- Billings comparisons to other players
- I got ‘champ’ed
- Gresham is Dusty/Gray/Ablett jr, but a far shitter kick
- Steele, Marshall & King untouchable
- Pies trade helps bring our later picks closer, hope dogs do the same

Not enough emphasis on how disappointed most people are that 2 of our longest serving players have re-signed....and the incoherent ranting about how guys who've played a handful of games are certain champions next year. Pretty much the same shit as most years but replace Hanners or Hill with Christian Xerri and Mason Cox.

The moonballing stat padder?

He got his 2 years so he should be stoked.

I remember a few years back when Xavier Richards knocked back his contract extension to find a pay day, but there were no takers, so he crawled his way back to the Swans & the Swans retracted their offer & delisted him. He then spent the year next playing for UNSW

Not enough emphasis on Rors being champed.

We should've withdrawn Ross contract 2 weeks ago

You'd expect all it would only take a late is a very late pick and is still only 22 so still room for improvement in him.
Even though he is still contracted?

It seems that he really tries to squeeze as much distance as he can out of his leg. If he could stop doing that and kick within his limitations he would improve his impact a lot as his short kicking is good.

Some of our players need to smarten up a bit downfield tho as well, ie, don't start waving your hands around calling for the ball 60 meters away from a player like Gresh, he won't get it that far.
Harvey cut back his distance to about 30m and that worked wonders

Why can it never be he stayed for less because he loves the club and as for depth he finished 7th in the b&f. I’d love him to be depth because it will mean the saints are flying but I’m betting their both best 22 round 1. Billings and Ross have both signed on and as far as I’m concerned that‘s good enough for me. Both look like being one club players now which imo is something we should celebrate, clubs need stability and experience which they provide.

Happy for Billings to play round 1. I didn't mention him.

When i look at the team i'd like to see us field in round one, Ross isn't in it.

Where he finished in the b&f means nothing to me. I believe we'll be better off without him. I don't rate him... at all. I'm not alone.

You clearly do rate him. Cool.

He seems like a bit of a lumbering type to me, but I suppose he wouldn't be coming in as a best 22 player. His age is good and his VFL numbers are impressive. He hasn't done much at AFL level, but Goldstein has never been great for other ruckmen to play with.
Probably wouldn’t cost a great deal, but it may not be paltry due to the contract. Pretty much a full time ruck or bust type with little forward nous. A real Mumford bullocking type who is good below his feet, has pretty good tapwork, tackles to hurt, creates space at the clearances and can collect the footy all over the ground. Solid mark, but struggled forward. Had some very good games at vfl level.
