I'm not convinced Ladhams or Ceglar are that much better than Sweet who I think has been starved of opportunity

How about employing Stefan Martin like GWS did with Mumford as a playing Ruck Coach?

Rightly or wrongly he is not a player type Bevo rates. Bevs ended the careers of better rucks during his time with us.

He has a contract in front of him.
He's nowhere near Ladhams or Ceglar right now and was absolutely torched in the VFL by Tom Campbell, Rhys Stanley and NMM late in the season.
The kid is developing and needs more time.

Part of Stef's role was to help develop English and Sweet this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we do offer Stef a rookie list spot to keep the part-coach, back-up player role.

We need a refresh in the rucks big time, even if we lose a player. Martin, thanks for giving your all, Sweet, not given the chance, but up against it as not the mobility Bevo wants and English well. If you cant fire up and show some aggression in a final as ruckmen he never will. Forward / change ruck only. Even if we target the best VFL, SNFL, or WAFL ruckmen we need a change.

We've been linked to Ceglar - and even if we get him I want a young developing ruckman, ideally with a few years in the system. Ceglar's not going to play every game and I don't see English as a long term first ruck, more a forward/ruck

He was seen as being behind Lewis Young as a ruckman when we were in dire need of a ruckman.

As it stands the guy is an adequate if one dimensional state league level ruckman who who is trying to either leverage our ruck needs into a longer contract or is looking for the same elsewhere.

I thought he was good at the ruck work when he played senior football. Thought he was stiff to be dropped and understood that it was because he wasn't getting enough possession in general play and wasn't making it to contested marking situations enough. But against that, I also thought he has good soft hands when marking, good technique (as opposed to, say, Will Minson, for whom overhead marking was the archillies heel in his game). If there has been poor form in the VFL towards the end of the season, well, you can understand it - I prefer to focus on the positive outings he had in the firsts.

Tell us Raphy you fount of all football knowledge.

Why exactly do we have to start playing him?

I would've though that his form would see him play, not the fact that he has a new contract.

Keen for him to spend the pre-season on the running track. With a better tank, I reckon he can be a serviceable first ruck. Get Baz and Hunter running with him over summer.

You’d hope that’s the conversation he’s had. We’ll give you 2 and an opportunity but you need to get to this point. Great if he’s taken it onboard and is up for the challenge.

Well he was given a taste early in the year when his form warranted it before he dropped off in form during the year, which tends to happen to tall kids who are not fully developed.
I expect he'll play some senior games again and hold decent form at VFL level for longer into the season this year.

Reportedly Mofra - Sweet has accepted a two year contract onto the main Dogs list

Due to the smart draft pick swap Sam Power made swapping pick 17 back to pick 23 and picks in the 40's .. watch this space a ruck via swap or draft may still fall our way outside the Sam Darcy pick

I thought Sweet played OK when he got the chance, and was unlucky to be dropped. He is only 23, and needs to take the next step against the 'big boys'. So whether that is improving his tap skills to your fantastic midfield, or mobility around the ground, or becoming an unmovable brute in a pack situation, or building a tank to keep getting to the next ruck contest. He has to improve his value to the team. Wishing the best of luck to him and I hope he takes over the #1 spot.

Start bloody playing him. Not rating ruckman hurt us this year. I know we won the flag in 2016 with a lot of Bont and Jongy and others going ‘3rd man up’ and Bevo was filthy they changed the rules after then. But we must adapt or waste our wonderful onball brigade.

I reckon we're backing him in. Sweet, take the hitouts, mark when you can, throw a bloke when you gotta, and keep it up all game. Do that, and you could be a premiership ruck in a year's time.

Not discounting Martin's tutelage should we retain his services, but if we're investing in another couple of years of Sweet with King now gone it wouldn't be the craziest idea if we enlist a ruck coach with the appropriate bona fides.

A certain bloke named English might even care to sit in on a few classes.
That's pretty much what Stef Martin will be next year.
Put him on the rookie list, his salary isn't counted in the soft cap, and he may even play a couple of games for us.
Sweet showed a bit at the start of 2021 the dropped off in form as big developing guys often do

My real concern is we have very little depth and injury cover in the ruck area so really do want more support in that department

5:55, the moment Sweet consigned himself to playing vfl for the rest of the year.

On a serious note, if he had dominated the vfl he would have been in line for a recall, but it was always going to be an uphill battle to win back the respect of the coaches after his effort against Melbourne. Unfortunately he didn't dominate after getting dropped.

Anyways apologies for the negativity but I feel like this particular effort has been glossed over.

People underrate ruckmen because a good ruck (eg Hickey) can basically neutralise a great one (eg Grundy) if that's their goal, so ******* commentators start questioning what the difference is and whether to bother with a specialist ruck at all. The difference is when you put a great ruckman up against a below average one they're guaranteed to be BOG because its a one on one contest all game with no hope of a chop out. When you play against a guy that you know you can dominate physically, it's very easy to start getting creative. Sweet is average size for an AFL ruckman with no athleticism, English lacks strength and doesn't really know the position, Stef Martin is 47. Having Sweet is better than not having Sweet, but we have really s**t the bed by not even trying to get in a stopgap AFL standard ruck in the past 5 years. We don't just lack depth, we lack a competent first option.
