Unpopular opinion-Sometimes it’s best to do nothing if there is no trades that suit.

When you’re coming off a spoon and only have 2 decent picks in the draft, doing nothing may not be a great strategy

Adding pick 1 and a long term ruck/forward prospect to an already promising list would seem a fairly solid off-season?

What specifically do you want the club to do that doesn't involve gutting the draft hand next year?

Compensation pick for Dumont may help if he decides to leave and someone wants him...l still think he will stay.

If he stays, it will likely be due to complete lack of offers. We haven’t heard anything in terms of interest for him and Atley.

Another amazing trade period from them.
3 very early picks to bolster their already amazing young group

Amazing trade period?

I don't get that tbh.

They are treading water. They've lost a previous top 5 pick who was now one of the best 5 players for another 18 year old who will hopefully be as good in 5 years.

They had their other top 10 pick regardless.

I think it's a good deal for Carlton tbh.

Would you like losing Simpkin and LDU but walk into the draft with Pick 1,4,5. At what cost of the picks makes it not amazing? They haven't offloaded a 28 year old for that pick, they are just replacing someone with 4-5 years of development.

We have had a history of below average traders, put the stat nerd back into the cubical and get a hostage negotiator to do the haggling.

It's half time and North have swung some changes...

Moved to the back line is

And thrown into the middle is

Lets see how things roll in the 3rd quarter

I think it would be better to invest into this year rather than next, due to our age demographic. Trading futures for decent picks this year makes sense, while keeping 2022 first.

We may still do that but currently we haven’t done much.

Why add in Simpkin? He's the reigning B&F and future captain who'll click over 100 games next year. He's way ahead of Cerra on his own.

Now, if LDU wanted to leave and we had no hope to keep him, and someone came at us with picks #4 and #5?? Or even #6 and some future draft steak knives?

With the large amount of decent free agents next year we could probably get away with not having as many picks.
The opportunity was there we just didn't jump on it.

Very limited sample size but yeah, 75% time on ground for a decent game stretch and whilst it probably wasn't his ideal option, no shots fired. I remember late in one game he was at the centre bounces and the opposition ruck just remained grounded and avoided X's ridiculous leap, grab ball and easy clearance.

I thought it didn't look good and it reminded me a bit of something Shane Harvey did and never played again.

Then again, I saw Anthony Stevens hedge and run away from the ball about to bounce in the middle of the MCG about 8 games into his career. 2 players were coming the other way and it was very Cale Morton like. Needless to say, he didn't get the bounce he wanted and they got an easy goal.

Goldy on the hand had two top 10 drafted ruckman in front of him and not only won the spot but they ended up being traded.
The was the only time he ever did that tho.

It’s still a chance. Pick 19 isn’t the only pick that was gettable.

As for Simpkin, he's definitely ahead, but not way ahead. Cerra finished 3rd in their B&F in 2020 as a 20/21 year old.

We're better than our ladder position suggests. With an actual full preseason with Noble and his expanded coaching team, we'll enter the 2022 season head and shoulders above where we were at the start of this year. I don't think Rawlings et al have to move mountains this trade season with the dearth of must-haves on option. If we were to get CCJ + 1 or 2 decent young defenders, one of whom is a quality interceptor, then I'd call that a success. It should be celebrated that unlike many of the other teams at the bottom of the ladder, our club knows exactly where we are at and they know how to create a sustainable path back up the ladder. Squandering picks and money on players who don't want to be in it for the long haul, or those who have already peaked and won't be at their best when Larkey, LDU, Thomas, Simpkin et al are, is just a waste.

But yeah, some more good draft picks would be fantastic.

Like if you want to compare what Freo is doing, we'd be trading LDU. I wouldn't be about that. I know there is difference with Cerra wanting to leave, but if anything that's better that our good younger players aren't looking to leave.

There's six days to go?

We also may rate next year's crop higher than players who may be available in the 10-20 range this year.

Carlton will secure Dogs defender Lewis Young and West Coast will land Sam Petrevski-Seton as part of a three-way trade being thrashed out on Thursday morning.

The Herald Sun understands West Coast is prepared to offer up pick 52 to Carlton for former pick six Petrevski-Seton, and the Blues would then on-trade that selection to the Dogs for key back Lewis Young.
