I don’t understand how everyone here not getting the ins and out on this trade. It’s pretty straight forward.
Removing cap off our bottom line to help us retain players for next year.
More fun for the nuffies to yell "FoLd CoAsT" than actually understand though.

The AFL is partly at fault here so they cant tell the Suns no this trade stinks. They gave them PP's, 10 rookies, Darwin access but no extra cap or main list spots to accomadate them. What did they think was going to happen?

This is the sole reason for the PP's... and it's a good thing.

GCS had to overpay players with potential without knowing if they would ever reach their potential (ie Will Brodie on $600k/year...).

It allows GCS to clear overpaid deadwood by putting draft pick icing on top, without destroying the clubs draft position (and therefore their short term competitiveness, or long term viability).

It allows them to allocate the salary to the new crop - and just hope for a better result this time around...

Wages off the books, list spots freed up, and a huge amount of picks for 2022. Not optimal but unfortunately it is where we find ourselves.

Don't worry, we'll give you our 2022 first for handful of 2022 later picks if the father sons choose to come to us next year.

You'll have an extra first round pick either way.

Even with the Cap relief the Suns get this still feels like a robbery. Freo have done well here.

I find it funny where sps and O’Brien will go for nothing or delisted and brander No one wants who were top 10 picks no one cares but when we have a top pick not work out the drums beat

you could of just delisted him next year for free, his contract was up in 2022. It looks like Gold Coast are a little spooked by all the talent that needs to be signed up next year and are bolstering there hand just in case of emergency.

I think Collingwood showed fairly well last year why its better to be proactive with these things....

There is now money that can be offered to players they want keep for next year, signing them early. Rather than waiting for them to come out of contract and running the Gambit.
Would expect a few contract extensions to be sorted before the season gets underway

Forget about the picks in the 60's, GC don't have list spots. Lets say the F2 is in the 25 range, basically is is Brodies contract +19 for pick 25 next season. Brodie's stupid contract can be used to resign players like Anderson, Rankine, Luco, etc. Paying 600k plus for Brodie who isn't playing is bad business. It's actually a very smart deal
yeah ok, so its a salary dump

Even knowing that it is still a horrible deal for Gold Coast

Really they have just flipped 19 (which becomes 21) to pick 25 next year that's it. It's a fine deal. Use the money to retain their good players. Brodie was just an overpaid reserves player.

They end up with worse draft picks and saw a young player walk away. But in GCS land that is a win.

A young player who was pedestrian at the best and was costing 600k in the cap! They have just flipped seconds that's it. GC don't need too many picks this year.

So they give a young player away so they can move down the draft order?

I get why they did it but this is still a major loss anyway you slice it for GC

A good deal for Freo on the face of it. Taking advantage of their cap space and GC's lack of it.

However, if Brodie turns into the player his top ten pick indicated then it turns into a massive deal for Freo.
