OK, I think some wires are getting crossed here.

Under the new NGA rules, the Saints can't match any bid in the first 20 picks, regardless of matching point etc. So our pick 20 is the first pick they can be selected at and matched. What I'm proposing is the saints getting a player before the bids, plus getting extra picks plus points to avoid a deficit next year.

Moving from pick 9 to 20 does nothing to compromise their ability to match NGA bids, and ensures they still get a player and can match.

yeh nah you are missing the point.

why slide from 9 to 20 when not one of your players is set to go inside the top 25 picks.

This makes no sense.
North had Pick 11, right?
Crows bid on Tarryn at Pick 8.. which would have meant we had to use Pick 11...

the mentality is instead of trading 11 for Polec we should have traded 11+ something else to get ahead of the bid. That way we could have had Bailey smith for example as well as Thomas.

saints don’t need to worry here, they will take a top 10 pick without having to even worry about their nga prospects until later

True, throwing Xerri in to a similar deal would've made sense.

I guess it would depend on the saints rolling the dice on their NGA players. Any bid between 20-25 would put them into deficit next year.

I could be wrong, but don't you go into deficit in the round you matched the bid, so deficit for round 3 match, isn't as scary as deficit for a round 1 match

all good as long as the dogs didn't want Bailey and were happy to trade down in the first round, pretty sure the club would have investigated such a move, as that would be plan A, Plan B would be get a former top 5 drafted player for nothing, it really ain't anyone's fault that Shaw thought it would be a good idea to get Polec to tag Cripps.

So how many list spots do we have available for the draft as it stands?
We need to delist one to ensure we take our 4 picks inside 47

then if we take dfa/psd/rookie pick 1 then another goes

in summary Campbell is cooked

then 1 of Atley/Dumont/ham will probably go

I really think we will use the SSP period.
Have a few blokes competing for one spot.
Hedge our bets a bit.
If one gets an injury we just don't take them.

I'd be keeping as much experience on our rookie list as possible. We are going to be seriously young in 2022 and it will be good to have some mature bodies to help the kids in the back half of the season.

In a year or two I can see X and CJ taking over while Edwards is learning his trade.
Edwards might do a Corey McKernan and put on 10kg in a pre-season. Not saying it will happen but Corey proved that it can be done. I proved that it can be done in a week thanks to Pizzeria di Ciccios.

I can share the working if people want to see it, but currently our available list spots are:

Senior List: 5
Rookie List: 2
Cat B: 1

Currently out of contract:
- Trent Dumont
- Shaun Atley
- Tom Campbell
- Charlie Ham

My best guess is we take Picks 1, 20, 42 and 47 to the draft. Leave a list spot free to evaulate DFA/PSD options, similar to what was done with Skinner and Appleby last year, then move Dumont to the rookie list. Whether the second rookie spot is used to draft a player, add Tom Lynch, or to bring back Atley/Campbell/Ham is the toughest decision.

Sounds like we'll be running CCJ and Goldy similar to Jackson/Gawn style.
Gonna suck for Xerri being stuck in VFL watching on.

He'd have been stuck in the VFL at St Kilda behind Marshall & Ryder anyway. 2022 he will be waiting on an injury at either club. Goldy & Ryder are both getting on in years, wouldn't be unrealistic to expect he'd get exposure through these guys getting injured at either club.

Surely we keep Ham for another 12 months.

I defy anyone to fairly evaluate how he will perform after zero games in only 6 months on the list.

Marshal's got lots of injury worries.
I could see him playing some games in 2022 if he went to the saints.
Has a better chance than paul hunter.

I think with Ham there's no need to rush the decision. They can wait until the rookie draft and see if there's a kid that slipped through that they prefer.

I imagine that Brady/Finnigan/Luff etc would have a ranking of all of the draftees this year with Ham included, as you can basically only evaluate Ham as a draft prospect with how little we've seen of him.

Yes you get your wish, and rightfully so now we’ve kept X.

Their kids aren't getting top 20 bids, so it's irrelevant.

They have enough points as it is, they move from 9 to 20...

It's a terrible deal for them.
yeh nah you are missing the point.

Eh, I disagree. In my opinion it makes sense for them to drop back from 9 to 20 in this draft as they don't have enough points to match the projected bids in the 20's. But in the end its a hypothetical and likely won't happen so arguing about it on here is pointless.

list size 43 ( need to trim to 42)

Delistings
Garner
WW
Tyson
Menadue

Out
Taz

assumed delisting TC

ins

1
20
42
49
CCJ
PSD/RD/DFA

We need to find 1 more spot to get to 42, 2 more if lynch hits the list and 3 more if we took a DFA and still wanted a psd/rd pick.

Ham
Atley
Dumont

In my opinion previous ham would be in the gun, and I’d be ok for lynch in for Atley (satisfies my want for experienced back up) but Dumont should only go if that extra psd/rd pick is better
