Don't listen to Gary Lyon. He seems to rate the depth and talent of a club on the back of a few wins. He used to rate Collingwood as having a great list in 2003 and among the top 2 in the league for the next few seasons even though I still rated them as a middle of the ladder list. The next year when they lost early games he was saying they look old and slow and need to rebuild lol. In a month, he would be saying the Hawks were average and the Tiges look exciting if we won our next 3 or 4 and if the hawks lost their next 3 or 4. This can easily happen too because we do have a young promising list who will turn it on at some point

That article is certainly painted with some extra-high strength rose coloured glasses. The Hawks looked bloody horrible in the opening couple of rounds and then managed to knock off the wooden spoon favourite by 3 goals. At least the Tigers have been competitive in their matches, even if things haven't gone fantastically.
Clinton Young and Grant Birchall on par with Deledio? Franklin most exciting youngster around? (Hawkins, Gibbs, Murphy, Pearce etc. anybody?) Blue chip stocks waiting to develop? What a load of shit. You can't on one hand say "Where is Danny Meyer and JON?" and on the other hand say the Hawks are just letting the kids develop in the twos. Its the same bloody thing!
FFS, if tanking for picks is the way Lyon wants teams to play then he's a bigger ****wit than i had imagined. At least we've had the balls to stay competitive and give our senior players something to play for. I bet Crawf loves the way the Hawks have gone about it for the past couple of years.

Gary Lyon is a half-wit, paid to make a statement regardless of what it is. His research here is basically non-existent, and has only skirted around the edges of any real insight, just to make up his 500 word column (which he struggled to do) in the Sun.

its not that we think we are going to improve more than other clubs, its the fact that apparently every other club is developing and improving faster than us. On top of that apparently according to this muppet lyon, we have balls-ed it completely and should start all over again. Pathetic

thats why during preseason when everyone was predicting top 8 it was laughable

the only way to catch up to those teams is to take one for the team this year and get the priority pick

or we could win our last 10 games and finish 9th again!

But its not all about the top picks. Carlton got guys like Waite, Fisher, carazzo, simpson and setanta either from low picks or the rookie list.

Foley is the only player i can think of that has come good of our rookie list. And Raines, tuck and coughlan the only real stand outs from later draft picks before 2004.

Whilst i dont believe and havent believed that we would be better the a bottom 4 side i still want the boys to try and win games. And i dont think a priority should sway our side to tank.

gibbs, murphy, kennedy and hampson are the future of carlton and they went through pain to get these guys

i dont want to finish last ever again but a top 3 pick would be crucial

Im talking about before the 2004 draft. We all know what frawley did during those years but look at the other teams and they have some good players from those drafts like hodge, Walker, Mitchell and Waite.

Essendon have done well thru the rookie system. I thought lovett was a brilliant young player but he and lovett-murray are 24. They are hitting their peak. Plus good players back in they are a good side.

These sides have continued to pick up some good players while we squander draft picks away. Our best mid from this period has been cruel-ed by injury our next best is tucky. Thats a real worry.
