SOUTH FREMANTLE young small forward Jesse Motlop, the son of former Port Adelaide and North Melbourne player Daniel, has had an impressive 2021 season across the WAFL Colts and PSA competitions. His form and undeniable potential earned him a WAFL League debut with South Fremantle, against fellow finals contenders Swan Districts. The Fremantle Next Generation Academy prospect ended up being an important part of the side’s six-goal victory, chiming in with two goals of his own in the third quarter whilst setting up a few more throughout the entirety of the game.

Toby Conway is the number one pure ruck choice in the 2021 AFL National Draft. The Geelong Falcons big man stands at 204cm and 90kg, and is hard to beat at stoppages with his sheer strength and ruck smarts. He can take a contested mark, and positions himself well around the ground to be an outlet option and target, though is still improving areas of his game such as his kicking and developing that forward craft. Not the most athletic of players, Conway plies his trade through strength and work rate which is evident in his game by wearing down opposing rucks.

Over a two-year period where so many draft prospects have lacked the opportunity, some have taken each of theirs remarkably well. One such AFL hopeful is Angus Sheldrick, who has played himself into top 30 contention on the back of a remarkably consistent body of work. The Claremont product and Christ Church Grammar skipper had an early finish to his 2020 campaign, but has shown marked resilience and a strong rate of development in 2021 through his desire to work and improve. He is a player who hardly has a bad outing and can be turned to in the trenches, producing game-winning efforts by making the best of what he has. From a fringe state Under 19s squad member to squad barometer, Sheldrick’s top-age season has proven a memorable one.

Standout Attributes: Speed, Leap, Marking, Disposal by foot
Rationale: Melbourne don't particularly need anymore medium sized defenders, but I've got Brown sitting at 21 on my draft board so at 37 it's too good to pass up. Brown has been somewhat hampered by injury and inconsistent form early in the season, as well as being tucked away in the Geelong Grammar APS program which makes it difficult to get much press from amateur draft watchers, but he reminded everyone of why he was and is seen as a first round contender come the Metro v Country challenge match where he was arguably the best Country defender of the day.

Realistically he's shown he can play anywhere on field, so he could well slot into the Dees forwardline as a Fritsch understudy, or be backup for when Hibberd retires

Connor Macdonald is an inside midfielder with a speedy burst out of congestion and some nice all-round athleticism.

With some terrific inside skills, as well as his decision making generally being on-point, it is more about ironing out Macdonald’s kicking and finishing execution than anything else.

With the Dandenong Stingrays this year he picked up no less than 24 disposals from his four games, including two matches of 30-plus disposals in what was an outstanding showing of consistency, catapulting himself into draft calculations.

I thought that rule only applied to first round picks. It does stand to reason, because essentially there's an extra pick created. Let me nose around the rules in Lore's thread and see if I can find something definitive later today when I have time. If not, we might just apply that rule anyway.

After earning All-Australian selection at the 2019 under-16 carnival, the speedy, 178cm midfielder dominated in his bottom-age year in 2020, averaging 26 disposals and winning Norwood’s best-and-fairest in a premiership side.

Murley may be slightly built but he is clean, well-balanced, wins the ball on the move and uses it well with both feet.

He is one of four South Australians in the NAB AFL Academy but has featured at reserves level for the Redlegs in 2021.

But injuries, which have sidelined him since July, continue to stall his development.

This was a tricky selection as I did give serious consideration to Arthur Jones who is a speed machine and also Lachie Rankin. Ultimately we plumped for Murley who just seems a very balanced and classy user of the ball who probably only dropped this far because of injury.

In Gibcus (developing KPD), Sinn (speedy wing/half back), Knevitt (taller mid/forward) Alleer (mature KPD), Macdonald (inside ball winning mid) and Murley (speedy mid/small forward) we think we have a good spread of high end talent that cover a variety of positions and should give the Tigers every opportunity of remaining a relevant force as current stars start exiting the club.
