I was also disappointed not to see Browne featured through the WA midfield either.

No doubt the draft stocks of Sheldrick and Dittmar rose and they deservedly featured, but Browne's play in the Colts was seriously good and should have leant itself to an equally prominent midfield opportunity.

All the champs confirmed for Browne is if he's not used through the midfield, he's not the same player.

I think we all have our favourites at times, nothing wrong with it really. What Cal does is effective enough, I'm not sure you need to scribble down a bunch of highlight plays to get a basic concept of a player either, if a guy moves well in traffic enough that it's their biggest strength you'll remember it, it's only when you want to start getting into the niche things you look for that you need to take extensive notes imo

St Kilda in the real thing I imagine would match bids on him, and a bid should come earlier than this.

I'm not personally going to take an NGA or F/S just for the sake of it. If they're not the highest player on my board and they're a good way off, it makes no sense to select them or match bids.

Windhager can fall into the rookie draft and if this draft continued into the rookie draft, there are players I'd still be picking ahead of him with my view being if I were to select him, it's a pick on potential over performance, and a speculative one.

Yes he does embellish some of the stuff, but by the nature of what he does he can only give half the story.

He can tell us all the “ good “ footy on field stuff about players.
What he can’t ( and rightly so ) doesn’t put out there in the public domain is the negative off field stuff.

How kids interview and more importantly, their character reference check.

Let’s be honest a cross section of the general public are drop kicks, have character flaws and question marks, the draft cohort is no different.

This facet of drafting and recruiting is very important and sometimes has a significant bearing of just where in the draft a kid is taken.

What the line of communication Cal will convey is that player X will interview well, or that the player Y will relocate easily, so the positive is acknowledged but the negative stuff is deliberately kept out of the public domaine.

This negative information is something that most outside the inner sanctum of the AFL recruiting or drafting cycle would not know much about.

Those posters closer to certain players at Club and State level on here may have an inkling to part of it, but most who post here are not aware of these details when we make draft range predictions based soly on on field footballing exploits.

Not expecting a 5th pick here but taking the Tasmanian here. Banks is a leader, a smooth mover and an elite distributor of the pill playing mainly off the half back line with stints in the midfield and the wing. Banks has shown that he can accumulate the pill in defence and provides plenty of run and carry. I would like to see him get more contested ball however he is too good not to be picked up. Banks also trained with North Melbourne as part of the AFL Academy program.

I was really keen on him earlier in the year, for exactly what you mentioned: competitiveness, ability one on one and I thought he was pretty good on the left peg.
His game in the trial match for Vic country underwhelmed a bit. But I agree, if you put him into a really good development system like Sydney he could thrive.
I didn't rate Amartey that much a few years back, but credit to the swans as he's looking decent (good development).

Harvey Harrison - North Adelaide

181cm, 71kg, Balanced Midfielder

Harvey is a pacey midfielder who has picked up big numbers for North Adelaide in the under 18s all season. Capable of playing both inside and out, Harvey has shown a propensity to win clearances and breakaway with the ball all season. The way he plays he looks like an outside midfielder, but the more you watch, the more you notice just how good he can be at winning his own ball as well.

He finished the season 7th in total disposals (25.2 per game) and 2nd in total clearances (5.4 per game) in the SANFL under 18s and showed a lot of consistency in winning the football, falling below 20 disposals in only 4 out of 17 games. What really catches your eye is his run and carry when he gets the ball. He tested quickest out of all players tested at the combines this year and it shows in the way he plays. He gathers the ball and puts on the jets before driving long inside 50. He has breakaway clearances that have you nodding your head in approval and he can hit the scoreboard as well, kicking 9 goals for the year including a bag of 4 against Norwood in Round 7.

Whilst his decision making is very good, his skill execution especially by foot can be improved on. He can tend to rush his kicks when going at full pace so just needs to learn to steady before he kicks. Size wise he is quite slender so will need to put on quite a bit of core strength before he can play AFL midfield. There is a lot of Karl Amon

Pick 67 - Port Adelaide

Oscar Adams - Glenelg

198cm, 85kg, Key Defender/Tall Utility

Oscar is a tall key defender with a good leap, good reach and an ability to play further up the field. For the first half of this season Oscar showed his versatility by playing in the Ruck for Glenelgs under 18 side and did so with distinction. Averaging 14 disposals, 20 hitouts, 4.75 marks and 2.6 inside 50s a game, he impressed with his Ruck craft, his leap and an ability to find some of his running players such as Hugh Stagg and Harry Tunkin with the ball.

But what I like about him most and why i've drafted him is for his more natural play as a key defender. Whether its playing on the last line or more across half back, Oscar shows a lot of talent with his defensive nous. He has a big leap and knows how to get that fist in to spoil the ball away. He kept the ever dangerous Lukas Cooke to just the 1 goal in each of their two match ups in the under 18s finals.

With the likes of Jonas and McKenzie aging and with Lienert getting delisted, Ports key defensive stocks are in need of more replenishment and I feel Oscar is the best available key defender at this pick. The fact he can also ruck is a bonus and he'll get plenty of opportunity to development both those aspects of his game at SANFL level. He does need to put on weight and muscle, he is quite thin at the moment, but he does have the frame that should be able to grow into an AFL body.

Oscar is #41 on my draft rankings.

This negative information is something that most outside the inner sanctum of the AFL recruiting or drafting cycle would not know much about.

Those posters closer to certain players at Club and State level on here may have an inkling to part of it, but most who post here are not aware of these details when we make draft range predictions based solely on on field footballing exploits.

It is funny you mention the interview side Monocle, because I have found the basic but raw, pretty much unfiltered interviews of WA potential draftees that are done by the 'Road to the Draft" on YouTube over the last two years to be really fascinating and I have to admit a couple of times listening to these kids being interviewed that has changed my opinion about them either positively or negatively.

For example, (to take one of the positive one) there was one where they were interviewing Jack Williams early on in the season, and I felt he was very articulate on what he was intending to do to improve his game, including him saying he was working hard to improve his endurance; to then see him strongly running out fourth quarters in the U19 games marrying up so much with his stated intention is IMO a really good sign that he was able to (probably work with trainers to) put together and deliver the actions he needs to reach his objectives. You can probably take some other aspects of his character from that interview as well, some positive and some things that he may need to work on slightly.

And to be honest, there are also other interviews there (even factoring in the whole they haven't had media training yet) where there were a few alarm bells.

The awarding of leadership positions (or otherwise) works a bit as a proxy for reference checks as well for mine, although you always have to check yourself that clubs also have an interest in people getting drafted.

Two players in my top 40 yet to be taken with only a couple of picks left to go. Still some quality likely to go undrafted which might be a good sign of the depth not being too bad this year.

A totally selfish position but I am really grateful Chris25 is doing Freo this year and not me, and also making all unpopular (but IMO probably correct) calls on high end draft picks, and that all I have to do is make one call early and then take the best of the rest when everyone has finished mains and deserts - Thanks PMBangers!

Interesting on the interviews part of your comments, I've found similar that podcast appearances have influenced me at times, but I prefer the ones less known podcasts because its less structured and feels like the kids are a bit more open, unfortunatly I'm an ass and most interviews have been negative from my POV

Well yes I probably put a kind spin on it - I have to admit that many of these 18 year olds don't measure up to the levels of expectation that I would say normally place on intern or graduate interviewees (and/or maybe even the expectations of an 18 year old)...but they are 18 year olds, so we have to try and not judge (too much).

I actually like the structure because it allows you to compare the way that they respond to same questions; when doing graduate interviews I have always tended to use HR's template questions (regardless of the quality of the question itself) and ask the same questions of everyone.

Pick #68 - Adelaide - Jordan Lukac Woodville-West Torrens 196cm 89kg

I think he's worth a shot down here, he's certainly higher on my board.

Lukac had a terrific finish to the season becoming a flexible tall in both the SA Under 19 comp and also the Nationals against WA. He's got a beautiful set of hands, can take those strong one grab marks. Very good one on one, will take front position and then pluck the ball in front of his eyes. Contested ability no problems at all. More than competent as a pinch hitter in ruck and has a decent leap and well directed tap. Mobile, covers the ground well and is fairly sound at reading the play but his goalkicking can be spasmodic and will spray a few but does create numerous opportunities.

I feel in the right environment he could make a dangerous athletic package that would pose problems for defenders. He would be an upgrade on both Himmelberg and Frampton for a low risk pick here.
