SA V WA - 3rd match, 10 point win to WA

bests:
WA: Dittmar, Sheldrick, Browne, Tunstill, J.Williams, Jones, Hough
SA: D'Aloia, Roberts, Linke, Burgoyne, Ferres

what i took out of the game was that Roberts is looking less likely as a top 15 pick, J.Williams is not looking like a top 30 pick, Tunstill did really well (improving his stocks), Dittmar is such a tough midfielder/forw(improving his stocks), D'Aloia looks great for 2022, Ferres is decent but wish he kicked more goals, probably Burgoynes best game in the series, Sheldrick just works his butt off every game(improving his stocks), Linke showed he has some ability(improving his stocks), but overall not a great contest and lacking a lot of the high end talent.
Any more thoughts on Ferres? He's a bit frustrating. What role does he play at the next level? Does he have versatility? What pick?

i think he is that 3rd tall forw at AFL level potentially, he plays well in that he can play the half forward role well enough, but needs to kick more goals, could be a mid draft pick, because he is a good player, he just lacks in a couple of areas.

Hi Davo-27 ,

I know this has been asked before, but times change and perceptions change.

Who should the Hawks consider with our pick 5, 21, 24, and maybe 59 & 65 ?

Thanks

Hi Davo-27 ,

I know this has been asked before, but times change and perceptions change.

Who should the Hawks consider with our pick 5, 21, 24, and maybe 59 & 65 ?

Thanks

i think with our pick 5 we should be looking at Hobbs/Ward/Erasmus and doing a lot of work on those 3 players to see which is available and which one suits us going forward, if Callaghan slips through to us then he could also be an option, at pick 21 and 24 it depends on what is available, but at a guess we could be looking at players such as Knevitt/Bazzo/JVR/Long/MacDonald/Chesser/Clarke/Dittmar maybe even a Lohmann, Banks, Tunstill or Browne

as for 59 & 65, thats just wild speculation at this point, but a few players will be available as clubs can disregard players like Sicily, Worpel, Moore, Hardwick, Brockman ect and sometimes you can get lucky, at this stage i have no idea which good players will be snubbed by clubs until draft night.

top 20 picked is probably something like (Daicos, JHF, Darcy, Callaghan, Hobbs, Erasmus, Ward, Amiss, Goater, NWM, Johnson, Sinn, Rachele, Gibcus, Andrew, JVR, Roberts, Fahey, Sonsie, Draper) a few i wouldnt have top 20, but clubs seem to like them so thats all that matters on draft night.

Joshua Cripps, Goal kicking backup ruck. Any thoughts on whether he'll get picked up late or rookie listed with all this interest in ruck prospects?

next year theres about 10 quality rucks, this year its Conway and Andrew then crickets, i mean theres always a chance late or rookie for any kid with talent, but its a very small chance, i personally wouldnt draft Joshua Cripps at this stage of his development.

Goater looks like the Sam Frost version of a midfielder

after watching most of my top 50 and a few others in interviews, the things i came away from the interviews is that Mac Andrew and Campbell Chesser seem like Intellectuals(i dont mean Academic intellectuals, but if they choose to im sure they would do well there), they both speak very well which is a sign of high IQ, Hobbs seems very mature and head strong, he interviews like Hodge or Selwood, very impressive, Callaghan interviews poorly, even though im a fan, that is a concern for me, Johnson has a deep voice and seems determined which is a good sign and Banks is a true blue country lad(good character), everyone else seemed ok or normal in their interviews from my PoV, i will try and watch the rest of the interviews and see if any of the others stand out.

Not impressed at all about Goater. Needs to think more before kicking

these arent highlight packages, so you get to see some mistakes, thats the problem with highlight packages is you see them at their best, then after you draft them they fail to make it and you got fooled by a highlights package..... happens all the time, this is just his performance in the heat of the champs where AFL players that you rate even made mistakes during their time in u18 champs.(a good example is Kosi Pickett fumbled a lot in the champs in his year and i dropped him from 14 to 30 after that, but he doesnt fumble these days, so dropping him down the order was a reaction i had thinking he might fumble too much, but he is killing it for Melbourne and i should have stuck with my intuition/gut feel)

How do you get access to the interviews? I heard Callaghan on SEN and he sounded quite mature I thought. Agree on Hobbs and Banks though. Doesn't Banks sound like he's 40!

this kid does a good job of interviewing them on youtube, i'm just not impressed with Callaghans way of talking i guess and Gibcus seemed a bit odd in the interviews as well? they were the only 2 out of approx 40 or so that i didnt like and i had maybe half a dozen i liked more than average.

The Phantom Draft experience i find fun and also revealing as to how others see the draft talent, it also refines your own thoughts i find, because you ask the hard questions of yourself like whether you really want a type of player at your club or not, which you dont often ask of yourself when making these player lists, things i learned from others in the Phantom Drafts i participated in recently.

1. Matthew Roberts could be a slider on draft night, he has been rated quite highly for awhile, but many went for other options, myself included, maybe we or i overestimated his impact or abilities, the games ive seen recently i have felt underwhelmed a little and he had very little influence over SA's midfield/flanks in their champs series and for a guy talked about as a first rounder previously that was an indictment on his potential.

2. there seemed to be a top 24 or thereabouts established(no particular order - JHF, Daicos, Darcy, Callaghan, Gibcus, Erasmus, Hobbs, Rachele, Ward, NWM, Johnson, Goater, Sonsie, Sinn, Andrew, Amiss, JVR, Wilmot, Chesser, Owens, Knevitt, Bazzo, Fahey, Conway), then after that came the coin flip players from what i could tell, a lot of different peoples favourites, but very spotty in terms of talent.

3. there are some under rated midfielders after the top 24 or so players that are athletic, accumulate and play well at the top level (championships/i like champs form over League form personally) so i think there will be a few clubs picking up gems late, teams with good recruiting teams who dont rely on hype do quite well with late picks usually.

4. the reaction to clips and highlights of a player can be frustrating in some instances, but it can also be helpful, the general footy fan might pick up something that you didnt previously consider, the only problem with "highlights" is that you can make a very ordinary player look good.

4. the reaction to clips and highlights of a player can be frustrating in some instances, but it can also be helpful, the general footy fan might pick up something that you didnt previously consider, the only problem with "highlights" is that you can make a very ordinary player look good.

The thing that I look for with players and this applies to Goater and Kosie is not the mistakes they are making but why they are making them. To me Kosie was inconsistent but his ball handling "in general" and from a technique standpoint was elite from time to time and his cleanness or the lack of it was never down to his technique or skill. Goater has some real flaws in his kicking technique that are rarely ironed out at the top level in my opinion. They very rarely try and break them down and totally re-teach how to kick. It's why the Irish guys are often good as they mature because their technique flaws don't exist as they are "learning from scratch" often. Goater is a big risk and will never be a good kick I don't think. In fact I doubt he will be league average. As a Geelong fan I hope we don't go near him.

Ps just between me and you put Mattaes P a lot higher in your next years draft predictions. I would be very surprised if he is not in the first 3 taken from SA and could work his way to number 1 over here. Trust me you'll look a genius in 9 months time hahahahaha.

there are concerns over Goaters kicking, but i look at a player like Dangerfield who also has issues with his kicking, but he also has speed, can create separation, strong in the contest, good mark overhead, these all balance out his horrible kicking at times, i mean Tom Mitchell is another example of horrible kicking yet, his work rate, accumulation, ability to find space in a phone box ect cancel out his horrible kicking at times, you could even make the case most of the top Brownlow Medallist chances this year have below average kicking. its because contested footy causes sloppy footy at times, i would rather a sloppy contested bull who wins you a final than a great kicking outside mid that relies on being fed the ball imo, although if you have the contested bull, the quality user on the outside can be a good complimenting player in your system.
