Rule Changes for 2022 for out top ups

  • Any delisted AFL player who has not played AFL or State League, or been on an AFL list for the past 12 months (previously 24 months), can be supplementary listed to play SANFL for AFC or PAFC.
  • A player who has served a minimum of 10 years on either Adelaide’s or Port Adelaide’s AFL list can be included on the supplementary (SANFL) List of the AFL club where they served the 10-year period.
  • Increasing the age range of interstate players AFL Clubs can include on their supplementary (SANFL) lists from 19 to 21 years to 19 to 23 years of age.
  • Adelaide and Port Adelaide would have access to Father-Son prospects in their 18th year, for a full season to play in their SANFL team – if they haven’t already played League with their SANFL club. In this instance, the AFL club would pay the player’s SANFL club a $5000 transfer fee.
  • Removal of a transfer fee for Next Generation Academy and Father-Son players in their 18th and 19th year, who are yet to play League Football at their SANFL club, allowing them an opportunity to play and train with their AFL-aligned SANFL club over a four-week period.

SANFL will adopt the AFL’s ”Stand Rule” for players standing the mark in its competitions, with this rule change among several adjustments ratified by the South Australian Football Commission for the 2022 season.

In 2022, SANFL will also be in unison with other State Leagues in allowing its AFL clubs the discretion to play activated Medical Substitutes in the SANFL.

Previously, players who were activated Medical Substitutes in the AFL were not permitted to play in the SANFL on the same weekend. This will now be permitted, however, AFL clubs must communicate their player’s availability to the opposition club within 60 minutes after the conclusion of the AFL match.
wow.. thats some pretty awesome changes for us and powa in the SANFL really…

gives guys like tex the opportunity to become player/coach onfield types after they finish up their AFL careers..

and fewer top ups means a much more competitive side which helps the youth develop.

the stand rule in the AFL is an absolute joke of a rule but bringing it into the SANFL actually helps our youth get used to having to play by it prior so thats a good thing.

now all we need is the umpiring not to be totally biased towards the traditional SANFL sides when playing against us.. its just downright disgusting most of the time.. blatant cheating.

Since Jack Hombsch has been hired as the teams AFLW Head of Development, I wonder if there will be any role for him with the SANFL too?

Was hoping AFL came to their senses and did away with the stand rule.. this indicates unlikely...very very disappointing.. absolute BS rule
That would require the AFL to admit they did something wrong, which won't happen. Hasn't increased scoring, but they spent so much time hyping up how great it was they won't backtrack on it now.

I doubt it. I think we will start moving away from the model where the women's coaches and managers do it as a side part of their role in the mens program. I think they will become more specialised.

I checked in here as I had precisely this query. At 28 you would think that he would be a great acquisition for any SANFL team, but I expect that the Crows will need to apply for an exemption for him to join us.

it does seem ridiculous that he’d join the Crows as a coach, and have to play for another SANFL team….

Under the new rules, he'd be able to play SANFL for us in 2023.

Will take a while though. It's a long way off needing a full time person for any more than a quarter of the year.

Thankfully any of these 10 year AFL players still have to fit under the reserves teams salary restrictions….ie $250 per game or whatever it is.

Cue the outrage.

Filling up a team with AFL has beens is normal SANFL practice.

On Pixel 5 using BigFooty.com mobile app

The Norwood finals team had 17 players from their junior zone, two from other SANFL clubs and three from Victoria. One being Douglas which I'll give you but good on him if he wanted to keep playing at a high level.

I don't see why anyone would have a problem with guys going back to their junior club after being delisted from the AFL. Alot then go back to their Amateur club after playing SANFL.

No need for grounded facts here.

Dmac couldn't, he's played AFL and SANFL in the last 12 months.

Just can't see the battered bodies of guys like Tex and Sloane having any desire to suit up to play SANFL.

I can see Tex wanting to but the club being willing to completely move on after next year.

Sloane might, but not without a coaching gig on the side.
