Movie Bond (No Time to Die)

It just got progressively worse after an okay first hour. Ended up not feeling like a Bond at all, can’t see myself revisiting it much. One too many for Daniel Craig, dampens his JB legacy. The worst since TWINE (and this film doesn’t have anything as good as Elektra in it). Felt like a generic modern blockbuster in the end: slow, overexplained, bigscreeny, mostly humourless, forced emotion, remix of the series and other things, just far too bloated but with padding not content. Hopefully Lashana Lynch or whoever can bring back the streamlined self contained fun to the 007 caper.

SPOILER ALERT...Saw it last night. I enjoyed it and never felt myself feeling like it was too long. Yes, the plot was a bit muddled at times. It was beautiful to look at. The female 00 was annoying and I wouldn't be interested in a reprise of that. My initial reaction to the ending was " the producers had no right to end things like that. Sat though the credits and saw the message at the end. . James Bond will return. Will be interesting to see exactly how. I suspect we could see some Bond films set in the 60s or something like that. Overall , I enjoyed it.

Oof.

First hour reasonable, then just ended up a muddled mess.

A movie that didn't know what it wanted to be, paying the odd homage or a love story intersected with forced humour and action.

Anyone remotely interesting was in it for 2 seconds.

Most of them phoned it in, and Rami Malek was terrible. No-one had much to work with though.

Ending would have been fine if there was a movie long build up to justify it. Just felt like the writers go to the end and thought "not much else is memorable in this movie, and DC isn't coming back, so let's kill him off. Just lazy.

Ana de Armas is great, the female 007 I didn't mind and was underutilized for someone that looks athletic. Jeffery Wright is a gun in anything he's in, and as said earlier, as soon as he was killed off the movie went off the rails.

Wonder with the biological warfare slant, how much the movie was edited if at all due to Covid.

Just a shame all round. Was tempering expectations but that was average.

A movie that didn't know what it wanted to be,

On reflection, this is true of the entire Craig run. They went in a few different directions. QoS they went the Bourne route a bit, then in Skyfall he was apparently too old, then his age suddenly wasn't an issue in Spectre, which also took a weird turn in the third act when Bond very conveniently escapes and then arrests Blofeld, which I heard was a hasty rewrite.

I liked NTTD. It has flaws, but it's a good way to end this storyline. Killing Bond isn't that big a deal to me because this is the only incarnation that tracks Bond from beginning to end of career, and beyond, whereas the other Bonds are just one-off adventures which can remain unaffected because they don't portray this part of his life. Also one of the appeals of Bond to me and probably others is that he is in peril, he's not a superhero. If you're into a more realistic Bond, then dying is also part of that. Another added bonus here is that a Bond death could be on the cards for future iterations and therefore add to the suspense of future movies. Bond himself always returns, but it would mean the end of an actor's run, so there is some suspense in that.

The only gripe I have is that his death wasn't written that great. It was no Spock in Wrath of Khan who made a very cold blooded and characteristic and necessary decision to save everyone. It was a lot better than Luke Skywalker's death though.

The ending, and the family part of the story reminded me of Kill Bill 2, a movie that I really liked, but they didn't perhaps do it as well.

The villain was a bit weak perhaps but there was so much potential there. I liked the idea of the poison garden, but didn't see enough done with it.

Ana de Arnas was awesome. Were her nerves an act, or was she genuinely a nervous pre-game performer who kicked ass when needed? I like to think it was part of her act.

I always wanted an old Bond coming out of retirement, but so old that MI6 wouldn't hire him, and therefore it would be for a personal mission like saving an old flame, or an illegitimate child. This was more like Dark Knight Rises where he's been out of action for a while but still the best available, and dies on his last hurrah.

Didn't like the ending. The villian was extremely weak and the story was too long and a bit convoluted.

I think its comfortably better than Quantum of Solace, but it doesn't hold a candle to Casino Royale and even Skyfall is much better.
I need to watch Spectre again to see where this ranks.

The Cuba scenes were amazing. But overall a little disappointed at the script. Blofeld was a complete waste of time. Why cast him in the movie just to lock him in a cell. If they wanted to use him, he should of escaped. Also the new 007 should of been a male. It would be a perfect way to transition from the old one to the new one. A bit like when Judi Dench M died and Ralph Fiennes M took over. Big opportunity missed.

If the producers think that Lashana Lynch character is good enough to carry the franchise, its going to fail spectacularly.

I’m in the minority, but I rated Skyfall last in Daniel Craig’s Bonds

I was pleasantly surprised how well the new female agent character turned out. I was convinced that she wasn’t even going to flinch with the neck implant after Bond winced at his, for example. Didn’t happen, gladly. They never used the character to pander or push a particular message, which was refreshing.

If I actually thought killing James Bond meant anything maybe it would've had some resonance. But Hollywood isn't interested in ending any film franchises any time soon, let alone this one, and so we know James will be back within a decade and this whole thing will have meant nothing, so what's the point?

Casino Royale > Skyfall > SPECTRE > No Time To Die > Quantum of Solace imo

Sean Connery was the best Bond and that will never change. Craig was brilliant and a close second! Interesting to see who plays him (her?) next.
I wish Idris Elba was a few years younger, he would have made an awesome Bond.
Can't think of any real obvious candidate in the right age group for a franchise, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender could be interesting but again you could probably only get 2 films out of either.

Wait what? You liked solace and spectre more than skyfall ?
Me too. I think Spectre is significantly better than the two films surrounding it. We apparently don't have a licence to praise two Bonds in a row, so some films get unfairly panned and others get overhyped.

Casino Royale>Spectre>Qos>>Skyfall>>>No Time to Die

Craig had the perfect exit in Spectre, coming back again was such a bonehead move

A pretty good hang. Maybe more finite that it needed to be, but thought Craig sold it well.

Waltz's Blofeld one-scene performance here far surpassed anything the character did in Spectre. Which in turn made Rami's Safin much less interesting or intimidating after the opening scene. Feel like a better story would have eschewed the need for another big bad, given that the series peaked with Silva.

Was expecting some of Fukunaga's aesthetic but aside from some certain flourishes near the end didn't it felt too dissimilar from the others in the series aside from Skyfall.

Skyfall > Casino Royale > No Time To Die > Spectre > Quantum of Solace

Maybe it’s just me comparing the writing here to Tarantino’s work with Inglourious Basterds, but most of Waltz’ lines fell flat for me and I think he was ultimately wasted.

Yeah right, maybe I need another rewatch of spectre, only saw it once at the cinemas and remember being a bit disappointed, maybe I had high expectations

I thought Javier Bardem’s performance of Silva was over the top and corny

I wonder if…
Paloma could return as Leiter’s replacement? She’s going to be a fan favourite and the film needed more of her. Plus Ana de Armas is absolutely killer.
Guess it all depends on when the next one will be and the direction they take it.
