Hasn’t Roos been coach twice….coached one club to their first flag in 70+ years and groomed the other to go on and win their first flag in almost 60 years? Didn’t both clubs get stronger while he was there, and importantly stayed strong or got even stronger after he left?

He has a very strong coaching(and playing) CV.

Paul Roos and Ross Lyon both have similar coaching records, and both were renowned for their dour, defensive gameplans.

The only difference between them is Roos had an element of luck on his side, which Lyon didn't have, hence why Roos is a premiership coach, and Lyon isn't.

Sydney were basically a coinflip away from losing the 2005 grand final, just as St Kilda were a coinflip away from winning in both the 2009 and 2010 grand finals.

Ross Lyon's 2009 St Kilda team was far superior to any Paul Roos coached side, he just didn't have an element of luck on his side, not only in the game itself, but also the fact his Saints ran into a Geelong side hellbent on avenging for letting 2008 slip.

The best was when they'd post their injury list and nobody had heard of half the blokes on it. Yet somehow they're all best 22 and showed how gopies had been ravaged by injury lmao
Are you arguing Flynn Appleby won’t win a Brownlow?

This. Had the Cats taken their chances a year earlier history may very well have turned out a bit better for the Saints.

Oh well.

He seems like a decent coach, but Sydney also had COLA and an academy, and Dees had a lot of draft help.
Hopefully he can make them a more professional club.

Wasn’t the stkilda grand final the one where fatso hit the post but was paid a goal when the game was on the line?

To be fair to Roos over Lyon….Roos team participated in two flip of the coin Grand Finals with Sydney and won one of those. The Saints would have been lucky to win the first edition of the 2010 GF, as displayed by both scoring shots and events the following week.

I don’t think anyone could lay a glove on the work Roos did with Melbourne. They were a shambles when he took over and ever since they have methodically worked towards their current standing as the dominant team in the AFL. I don’t think there can be much doubt over that.

I think the statement that 2009 Lyon’s Saints were a far superior team to Roos’ Premiership Swans enhances the argument for Roos as a coach over Lyon doesn’t it?

If St Kilda had drafted Nick's cousin instead of David Armitage they probably would have gone back to back in 2009/10.

I heard Roos refused to join them until they named the club after him. They then paid 100k to a brand manager who took 6 months to come up with the North Pauls.

Actually he's been there mentoring for a year, so I should have done this material a while ago.
Comedy bronze

It did happen but it was during the second quarter. They won by 12 points in the end anyway.
