Same thing every year and still nothing done about it. How many more ACLs will they suffer? These numerous and ongoing knee injuries are crippling for the sport and the women. We should be working on knee stability above all else. Are other womens sports like this, or have they figured it out and we're laggin behind with the knowledge? Nothing changes until there are changes!

St Kilda were 3-1 against fellow bottom 7 teams last season (didn't play Gold Coast and Richmond, thumped West Coast in WA). I can still see them picking up 3 wins again with a better fixture, assuming no other disasters, because they should get back Vesely and Xenos this year and a couple of the young players might be ready to take a step up.

It would also make a big difference if Nat Exon is back to being fully fit and available a la her Brisbane best. Once an elusive player for opposition tacklers, now an elusive player to get updates about, it seems.

Well I don't think it's more important than concussion, but yes female athletes in all these similar ball sports have high rates of serious knee injuries compared to males.

Yeah I don't have the facts, but it seems in the womens game that ACLs are a much bigger threat than concussion.

I remember in the mid-late 90s knee injuries were sky rocketing in the AFL, I don't know if it was just bad luck at the time or they got on top of it with changes. Yeah women seem more susceptible to knee injuries for some reason, but it just seems ridiculously higher than usual in aussie rules for the number of women actually playing. It can't continue like this, we need to get better in this area. Maybe one day we'll be world leaders in the science.

I'm not a scientist, nor qualified in the area of knee health. I can confidently say you're asking the wrong person to solve these ongoing knee injuries.

If everyone is happy with the ridiculously stupid number of season ending knee injuries and think it's acceptable, ok then. I would hope the AFL are taking it seriously and searching for improvements.

This is from last month, and it suggests the issue is being taken seriously:

Geelong AFLW players are being put through their paces for a new research project looking to reduce the risk of injury among female footballers.

Using a 3D motion capture system at Deakin University's Centre for Sport Research, the research team will be recording the movement patterns of players that are typical in a game of footy to see if certain players have movements that increase the risk of injury, particularly Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures.

Dr Stephen Gill from Deakin's School of Medicine and St John of God Hospital said the project will also compare female and male movement patterns to better understand why women have a greater risk of ACL ruptures.

A bigger threat to what? You'd recognise that ACL injuries are a quality-of-career issue whereas concussion is a quality-of-life one.

But it seems like a lot of the narrative around ACL injuries misses the significance of that point, as well as underplaying the high rate of successful comebacks from knee recos.

Maybe concussion in AFLW is a less sensational topic now, given the rapid improvement over the last five years of players protecting themselves from head knocks. I'm sure if similar advancements with knee injuries could've been made in the same time, they would have.

In the womens game it seems ACLs are a bigger threat than concussions (a threat to the player and the quality of the competition). I remember the Crows player missing the GF due to concussion, but I can't remember any others last season, I'm sure there must have been. The ratio of them doesn't seem as high as in the men's game. But ACLs seem to be happening every week to the women, a season wiped away for each. Concussions can have terrible long term effects and has gone largely unrecognised for far too long. But I disagree with your point about knees being just "quality-of-career" issues. I know of too many crippled retirees who can barely walk, need recurring injections to help alleviate the lifetime of pain. It's just my opinion, I respect yours.

There will clearly always be far greater stakes involved with concussion, despite recent and future successful initiatives to improve prevention. Disingenuous to claim otherwise.

Those wishing for improved prevention of serious knee injuries ought to realise by now they've been barking up the wrong tree. The development of a much quicker and better recovery method will come along eventually, and then nobody will care about how common torn ACLs are.

I believe (and I may be misremembering) there have been quite a few studies done that show it is to do with the slightly different hip structure in women that leads to an increased incidence of ACL injuries. It's not just a phenomenon for AFLW.

Hopefully as womens' sports continue to grow and grow we'll see techniques developed to help reduce the amount of knee injuries.

Just on the crippled retirees. I don’t believe most of them would be crippled because of acl injuries when younger. More likely contributing factor would be the loss of cartilage in their hip and knee joints.

I hope Watt’s got a couple years more in the tank. Our stocks are seriously grim after her. Poppy Kelly was not one we should have gotten rid of.
At least one of the people who watches SANFL in the draft thread on here was a very big Cutting fan. Given her age, she's not likely a long-term option, but hopefully she can afford Price enough time to develop. If not, get an underused ruck off the ruck carousel like the Tigers did with Kelly.

Here's some of what the other clubs have been up to:

Adelaide: Erin Phillips resumed bringing her kids to the club once it was rid of wackjobs.

Brisbane: New captain Breanna Koenen

Carlton: Yet to announce a new midfield coach following Lauren Morecroft's departure

Collingwood: Shock revelations that Steph Chiocci attended a fancy dress party over ten years ago

Fremantle: Kara Antonio stepped down from captaincy.

Geelong: Renee Garing out for the season (pregnant)

Gold Coast: Kalinda Howarth bad news: she wants to play in defence more often. Kalinda Howarth good news: she has been at training for the last 2 weeks. Older news: Maddi and Teagan Levi to miss the season (rugby).

GWS Giants: Four players currently isolating

Melbourne: Business as usual?

North Melb.: Elisha King out for the season (ACL)

Richmond: Missed a week of training while isolating

West Coast: Business as usual?

W. Bulldogs:
Missed 1-2 weeks of training while isolating

I’ve been taking some time away from the club to consider my options and dissect my owns feelings about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. At this time, I remain unvaccinated, however I’m committed to learning more, consulting with additional medical professionals and continuing to discuss this with my family before ultimately making a final decision.

It's not an obvious conclusion, unless she's done something like posted anti-vaccination sentiments on her Instagram page. Far as I know, she hasn't done that, unlike Deni Varnhagen or Kalinda Howarth, for example.
So why the big defence of Patrikios and b.s. in the other thread when Finey was right all along and had his sources within Saints all along?

I think you might have b.s. for brains.

If I made any "big defence", it was of St Kilda. Because no, I don't think the club leaked confidential medical information of an AFLW player to anybody, much less Mark Fine.

Like I said, reciting evidence-free speculation from social media does not count as "intel". And even if that speculation is correct, doesn't mean it's not really scummy to engage in it.

Information doesn’t have to come from a club employee. There are plenty of people close to clubs that would have knowledge of such a situation.

I believe those two were bang on, in their podcast. And I don’t believe podcasts count as social media either. Especially one that presents itself as a footy podcast, linked to their own football website. Even if they do indulge in a heap of non footy stuff during the offseason (at which point I switch off).
